The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration announced Wednesday that it intends to use its emergency scheduling authority to ban three synthetic stimulants commonly found in recreational drugs sold as bath salts and plant food.

Widespread and growing sales of those and other synthetic drugs in head shops and on the Internet in the past two years have been linked to more than 20 deaths nationwide and thousands of calls to poison control centers.

The three stimulants are Mephedrone, 3,4 methlenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV) and Methylone, which have been found in products sold, usually as bath salts, under such names as Ivory Wave, Vanilla Sky and Bliss.

A laboratory hired by the Star Tribune found MDPV in numerous bath salts the newspaper bought over the summer as part of an investigation into exploding sales of previously unregulated synthetic drugs, which skirted food and drug regulations for a time by being labeled "not for human consumption."

The DEA said it published a notice Wednesday in the Federal Register to alert the public that in 30 days or more it will temporarily declare the three chemical compounds illegal.

The emergency temporary order would remain in effect for 12 months or more, with the possibility of a six-month extension. Meanwhile, the federal government would study whether to make the chemicals illegal permanently.

"This imminent action by the DEA demonstrates that there is no tolerance for those who manufacture, distribute or sell these drugs anywhere in the country, and those who do will be shut down, arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart said in a news release. Leonhart called the chemicals "a significant and growing threat to our nation."

The Star Tribune's investigation, which included tests of 30 substances bought in head shops and on the Internet, found chemical concentrations so varied that experts said users would have no way to determine a safe does of the substances in the products, most of which come without directions.

Does anybody know of any recreational substances that have been placed under this emergency order but were not permanently banned or renewed for an extension?

TFMPP was apparently emergency scheduled and then the scheduling expired, bringing it back to unscheduled status. [Source]

That's all I can think of off the top of my head but there may be others...

all things considered 20 deaths isn't bad; i bet there are going to be some big sales happening soon!

I agree. These drugs were, by and large, a bad thing for the drug community and a pain in the ass for the HR community. On the other side of the coin, its created an illegal black market for MDPV, mephedrone and methylone now.

Agreed, those drugs will join cocaine and meth as street stimulants though maybe MPDV will be less popular as if all are illegal, as far as I know, Methylone/Mephedrone are more poular.

As far as I'm concerned, these drugs were no good for the most part in terms of use by the general public though this applies to many drugs, there are people who enjoyed these in a responsible manner but those were less in number than the other sort of user. In my opinion, or this could be considered fact, they drew a lot of negative attention to the legal high market as well as drug use in general, as if we needed more negative attention.

I strongly disagree with the idea that "bath salts" are all bad and need to be scheduled.

1. Methylone was patented as an antidepressant by Alexander Shulgin and likely has great therapeutic value due to its shorter duration than MDMA.

2. Scheduling drugs does nothing but give control of them to criminals, reduce their purity and put non-violent drug offenders BEHIND BARS.

Anyone who thinks these chemicals should be banned without the proper scientific studies is a damn fool and a danger to the harm reduction community.

Definitely!

In any other area of life, if something is done without due process, it can usually be challenged. What harm/deaths have ever been proven for methylone?

None AFAIK. Well, there was one guy who died with m1 in his system...after being fucking TAZED by the po-po :\

I really disagree with the way "bath salts" were marketed in gas stations, but placing them in Schedule I without determining their medical potential or true health risks is not the solution (not to mention unconstitutional). I don't even use mephedrone, and I think MDPV is the most horrible drug I've ever encountered, but that in no way means I believe they should be prohibited.

Likewise, my use of methylone has gotten a little out of hand lately, but I don't rely on DEA scum to "help me" control my use of it by making it illegal. These two lines of thinking are what I hear prohibition proponents on this site spew most often, and they're seriously flawed.

There are probably 100s of substances that have been scheduled/classified on both sides of the Atlantic. Of those, how many were tested in any meaningful way? How many were actually even seen out in the wild? Probably there are an embarrassing number of substances that were banned on nothing more than a whim. When asked about banning methedrone they can claim that it was "linked" to a number of deaths. Though we know the "link" was somewhat weak or completely bogus at least there smoke they can claim is a fire. However, if the DEA/home office are grilled over one of the many substances that were banned for no reason at all....

Wonder why the feds are using DEA's emergency scheduling powers instead of the bills currently being considered in congressional committee. Congress must be so fucked up that they can't even get their shit together to pass a bill they all agree on. Emergency scheduling was probably the fastest, easiest way...

Aaha! So they admit it would be possible to take the drugs safely if only users knew the dose!

some states are also banning methedrone and the FMCs; I wonder if these will also be swept up by the DEA in the future
