The Travel Thread - I am lovely and respectful to all in my path PLUR <3 xxxxx

I was walking the river front area in Phnom Penh when this cunt approaches me and tells me he is trying to impress his girlfriend by raising funds for an orphanage in cambodia. He then goes on ,,, you understand sometimes you must try to impress your girlfriend. Thinking im some fuckwit who is going to fall for his story cause im there with my g/f. He then produces this book and asks me to write a message to the children and make a donation to him. I made it clear he was getting fuck all.

He approaches me the next night and tells me he's an american stuck in cambodia and needs 30 dollars from me to get a new passport. Poor kids in the orphanage are fucked if he ends up in America

What a proper cnt. I bet some folks must fall 4 his shit patter , otherwise why would he bother ?

The worst type of blagger using the Orphans plight to line his own pockets , he'll get his karma i hope.

He's a well known smackhead who's stuck in Cambodia, least he's not mugging folk like a lot of junkies do.

why were you so reluctant to give a poor fucker with one leg some money?

Have you ever considered that by giving an individual money for nothing you are in fact adding to their grief and unfortunate plight? That you are creating a class of people who are entirely reliant upon the philanthropy of foreign tourists.

Is it not more satisyfying to equip an individual with the skills and ability to survive by their own means?

Also, with regard to the actual act of giving charity; how do you decide who is deserving and undeserving?

Something for you to give a think over.

In the specific example of cambodia; the kids and other people begging tend to work for a criminal gang. If you decide to give them money it would help nobody but the grand daddy pimp who puts them out to work each day. The children are kept out of school to beg on the beach.

What you think happens to them when they arent young and cute children anymore? They end up sucking some fat british cunts cock. Im being particularly brutish here, but hopefully it will have some impact.

None of these I would really consider scams, it's just poor people begging because they need money.

Tell that to the countless NGO's who are struggling to help people in a meaningful way. Not all do; but thats an argument for another day.

Spoken like a tight traveller cunt, won't give a dollar of his precious money away to some kid who stood on a land mine. If you're so against giving money but all for equpping them with skills why aren't you doing something about that then, join a charity or NGO, do some voluntary work, take some action. You're not actually helping in anyway if you're not giving money nor teaching them skills. How do you know so much about whether there kids work for criminal gangs or not you've been reading to much of the Lonely Planet mate, burn the book now and do yourself a favour.

Thai boxing last night and it was particularly brutal- they dont fuck about.

Ended up a bit wrecked, cant really remember much about getting back to my hotel. So much so ive missed breakfast and got out of bed at 1 O'clock. Theres no chance I will find any irn bru to make it better.

Spade your infinite wisdom is a beyond comprehension. You know all and see all- even from the other side of the world. One day- maybe one day I will grow up to be just like you. 8)

You can only dream son. ;)

So when are you signing up to do voluntary work or with an NGO mate?

currently in Vietnam, just left Thailand.. i got FAKE valium :(

was an over the counter in a baggy routine which i've done maany times... first one was fine but the second one was weird, had mild closed eye visuals and finally a calm mind but unable to sleep! so happy i had some etizolam with me...

on further investigation of the remaining tablets ( by looking closely..!), they were all 'off' and not quite cut right, different ridges, prints of '10mg' etc.. and slightly faded colour blues!

SO... when in Thailand, ask for the blister packet!!

I never had any problems in 2007 but did this time.. which was silly!

200 baht for the baggy od dodginesss... and then 250 baht for a blister packet... always ask for the blister packet people!! :)

In the middle of planning a trip to South America with some buddies. Think we're gonna go straight to Bolivia and work our way up the west coast to Columbia. And probably stop off in the Peruvian Amazon along the way. Can anyone recommend places to go in these regions? Could use the info from someone that's been there before :)

im 35 next year. If I lose my job (50/50 chance) I am going to see the world. Never been travelling due to always having a decent job that i did not want to sacrifice. If my hand is forced, I have all the shizzle in this thread to look forward to.

Roll on redundancy! lol

How long you going for? I can give you some ideas of places to visit in Bolivia and Peru. Think you'll find it a bit difficult to get a flight from the UK to Bolivia though. If you've got a lot of time (min 4 months) you could start in Rio, Brazil or even Sao Paulo and work your way down into Argentina, across into Chile (or skip Chile) then up into Bolvia followed by Peru then onto Ecuador and into Colombia then take the boat down the amazon back into Northern Brazil and head for Rio to fly home. Be epic.

The coke is top notch in Bolivia and Peru btw escept ironically at the Route 66 cocaine bar which sells meth.

You'll probably just find another excuse not to go. ;)

Nah seriously, if you get the chance, go, go, go!

One day I shall see more than TheSpade.

One day....

You've got some catching up to do mate. Roll on January for my next adventure. Thailand & Burma are definites. Possibly also Laos & Cambodia (which I've been to before) and Phillipines which I have never visited.

^ Laos and Cambodia would be incredible..adding that one to the list.

We were thinking a few months, 3 or 4. I guess it depends what we plan to do. What you wrote sounds about right for what we're looking for. Assuming you've done it before... did you go with money to live off? Or did you try and work out there? It'd be great to get involved with the communities while we're there, but I'm not sure how realistic it is or if it's even really possible for a tourist to earn money.

As do a lot of junk people who never touch opiates.

Have you VSO as part of your hardcore travelling experience, Spade? How much do you hand out to beggars and what criteria must they meet for you to make a donation? Never been to Vietnam but a reputation for largesse in 3rd world countries I have visited is rather a double edged sword; the westerner was respected for his or her generosity but tended to have swarm of hustlers surrounding them like Dirty Macsquirty's flies wherever they went. On the other hand, prosperous tourists arrogantly waving away pesky natives can leave a bad taste in the mouth. Seems the richer they are, they less likely they are to give, which may say something.

You're adding Laos and Cambodia to your list? Thought you were going to South America? :\

Yeah I've been to South America before but only to Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Bolivuia and then back to Brazil again. I took money with me (would be stupid not to), never worked on any of my travels (Europe, Aus, SE Asia, South America) you would be hard pressed to find work in most of the places bar teaching English but it pays crap in South America. You're not going to get a job doing anything else, makes no sense to hire you, probably illegal too. And for 4 months it wouldn't even be feasible to get a job, why would you want to?

How long you going for? Did you ever do that TEFL course we were talking about before?

Minimum 4.5 months hopefully at least 6 definitely would like to be away longer. I signed up for the TEFL 3 times, couldn't be bothered first time, went out and got pissed the night before both other times and slept in. I can either do a course out there or wing it if I want to go down that road.

I'd like to respond to your post but it's too much effort to work out what exactly you're trying to say.

C'mon, you're not retarded.

In simple words.

Muggers are not necessarily on drugs.

Have you ever done voluntary service overseas? Or voluntary work at home, for that matter?

In what circumstances do you give to beggars? When you do give, with how much do you part?

Hope that's not too complicated for you.

I've done voluntary work at home yes, for Barnardos and others. Event fundraising stuff. Never volunteered abroad but plan to this time doing some good free stuff I found working with mountain tribes, eco projects, building bamboo huts and shit. Fuck aye!

I don't tend to give to beggars that often, if anthing it'd be my spare change. What's this got to do with anything.
