The inclusion of social chatter within AusDD will always split camps and invariably lead to what I mentioned earlier about losing quality posters who aren't interested in reading threads that are filled with nonsensical garbage and often frequented by those from the shallow end of the gene pool. The best intentions of quality posters like Mr Ibis who can chop and change between the social and serious is the exception, rather than the rule, unfortunately. The inclusion of social threads will always lead to the seepage of shit from those threads and into threads that are not meant to be social because over time the community will change so dramatically that the majority think it's ok the 'rite lyk dis'.
I would liken it to lowering food standards in that it may become available to a wider demographic because of reduced prices or greater availability, however, the quality of the product is reduced proportionately. This, over time, is exactly what will happen to AusDD because the product (the posters) will reduce in quality because the standards of what is expected and allowed has been lowered. This will create a snowball effect wherein the shit will be attracted to the shit, whereas, quality posters like we've seen in the past (ie. Phase) will not bother wasting their time in a forum where people are more interested in getting 'fully fucking throttled cunt', rather than developing their drug and HR knowledge.
This is the precarious balancing act the mods of this forum are continually trying to maintain. There is no question that this balance will never meet the demands of all, however, if you go too far one way then you are going to lose either the good or the bad (depending on your definition).
I, personally, have always maintained there is no place in AusDD for a social thread because the dilution it causes, and problems it will lead to, will ultimately destroy the previous good reputation this forum has always held within the wider HR community. I don't think anyone who has been around for a while would argue that the quality of contributions has declined. We have lost some of our most knowledgeable and consistent contributors because they are sick of scrolling through rubbish similar to what was seen above from Crankinit and headdah in what should be a serious thread. Would this be different if there was a social thread??? No, it wouldn't!!!! It would only become more prevalent because the status quo would slowly change, the quality posters would move on and the shit would permeate the entire forum.
So, should you lower those standards to attract more of the same and drive away the last of the quality to greener pastures??? I guess it all depends on what you really want from this forum.
