Grinders - yea or nay?

IMHO, the grinder is as necessary as the pipe. I can't stand when bud is broken up by hand, it burns unevenly and the person who has the first hit gets screwed because it takes some torching to get the chunks burning evenly.

one of my mates brought me one of these back as a present from amsterdam but i'm sure they are available online as well.

I don't have one because I'm consistently broke, but I am all for them, and I will purchase one sometime in the near future, if nothing else than the keif catcher. Rolling a blunt and then putting keif in the outer leaf is heavenly.

Coffee grinders may do that, but stainless steal grinders dont do that. They finely chop, but not dust.

IME, coming from someone who has most likely rolled 100,000+ joints in his life... Fuck grinders. totally unnecessary and makes rolling a bitch unless there's grinder ground bud + hash to keep things sticky. The consistency of grinder ground bud is fluffy and too malleable for me, I always end up with super thin and dense joints.. Rather than the tight, straight, baseball bat joints I get when I break up the buds by hand.. YMMV.

Don't have enough good weed to use a grinder. I do it by hand, I know it's not very effective or whatever but I roll smalll joints and I grind the weed fine enough I think.

PS: and I like the contact of the weed, touching it then smelling your fingers, lol.

plus, after smoking a few ounces each month, when you check out how much kief you've collected from a variety of strains. If you smoke anywhere near what I do, you can smoke that kief for weeks before running out. It does great in a pinch, dry spell, or whenever you don't wanna cop more bud

I don't use a grinder because I am a lightweight.
I smoke such a small amount that I would lose more weed in the grinder (stuck to the walls) than I would end up with in my pipe.

I am lucky enough to only smoke extremely high-quality weed when I smoke (which is not when I am in Japan). I take the tiniest pinch that I can, smoke it in a small hit, and that is all I need for 3-4 hours.

I would not grind up weed in advance because it would be lose potency by the time I smoked it.

if you cant roll good joints with bud from a grinder, what does that tell you about your rolling skills? doesn't matter how many joints you've rolled, if you don't roll a good one, then your not a good roller

My dad rolls awesome joints and he uses a grinder...I got him a Sharpstone for Father's day one year and he uses it every time. He thinks the kief collector is really cool, too.

This little collection is one reason I love my grinder.

If all you can find is shitty weed, throw some kief on there. Make a blunt or joint better. Make your stash last longer. Excellent. Go Sharpstone!

And also, I don't like breaking it up with my fingers because then my fingers get all sticky. And that grosses me out.8)

This thread makes me want to abandon my "cute" grinder and go get a nice one, since I only blaze headies and not getting the kief is probably a waste of my time.

Plus going off what Chainer said, having kief around really does prevent you from ever even contemplating taking resin hits.
