the guitar players megathread

The guitarist's Mary Timony (check the avatar). Renowned for her tapping skills...wait until it gets half way through the video.

The yellow pedal's an Ibanez flanger. I just got one the other week and it's really nice. It's capable of producing some really bizarre sounds. Thanks for identifying the Orange pedal, I had no clue. The rest look a lil' obscure, and are probably pretty rare or unknown boutique type pedals. :\

for some reason, every time i play the electric guitar its so boring and i cant be creative. maybe im bored of my guitar im not sure but when i play my acoustic, i always have fun.

^Maybe you need some inspiration. I find listening to different types of music keeps me engaged and wanting to learn more. Perhaps experiment with different tunings?.

I've always been an observer, so I watch people a lot. I find out what influenced them to play, then check out those bands too. Borrow a little from everyone else and make it your own. :)

I'm kind of the same way. Having access to multiple pedals helps, it allows for a lot more creativity than just your standard boring overdrive/distortion. I usually only play my electric when my fingers have have gotten too shredded from playing my acoustic so much. %)

yeh i got some nice pedals and they make it a lot more intersting but still, i have no inspiration. everything i play sounds the same and dull and unoriginal.

dont think about it, just start hitting a string in a rhythm as a bass-line, or a metronome rather that you happen to be feeling at the moment. just keep hitting that one string -bom bom bombom bom bom bombom- w/e haha and then start adding bits, and creating a passage into a scale and change or shift in the octave/key.

any time changes will come - if you mess up start over

IDK, thats what i do and it leads me to not really play the same thing twice - lol - but i dont remember much of it either;-) though the stuff i do play-back seems to be the stuff that should be played again.

Mary timony--cool stuff.

I don't tap much when I play, but i'm inspired by Dave Knudsen of Minus the Bear--He plays some pretty good stuff:

And yea, every time I go to shows now, I'm glued to either a bassist, rythym guitarist or lead guitarist--It's how i'm learning guitar.
Even when I listen to music now, I follow it with a mental visual component of what the musicians are doing.

Smith westerns were alright, but reuben of unknown mortal orchestra was mesmerizing, as was Ira Kaplan of Yo La Tengo.

Alt tunings are the shit!

What kind of guitar(s) do you play?

^What kinda music are you into?

at the moment im really into deerhunter/atlas sound, tame impala, stereolab, throw me the statue and pale saints.

im using a decent fender strat through pedals to a laney tf-200. im bored of this setup though. i want new stuff.

nice I f*ing love deerhunter and atlas sound--been some of the most mindblowingly good shows i've seen. Haven't seen stereolab but like them alot too.

strats are pretty capable and versatile; do you not like the amp or just the pedal variation?

i dunno man. ive been playing with the same amp and guitar for 15 years and im so bored of the sound. its not a bad sound but i just dont know. want to swap rigs?

Hmm, glad you approve. If you're not familiar with her work I'd recommend anything she's done over the last 20 years. She's awesome. She's also taken to playing guitar behind her head, sitting on the floor etc. So she wins bonus points from me on that. <3

Hmm, that was quite nice. Not my usual, but still. :)

I've only just started to get to grips with tapping and it's been a challenge. But that's kinda the point. It's made it more interesting again.

Yeah, I do this too. If I'm at a show my eyes are constantly on the guitarists hands and stuff. And when I listen to records, I always try to visualise where their hands are or what chords they're playing. I'm self taught, and have played by ear ever since I was 14, so visualisation has always helped me. I'm the same with maths. If I can't visualise it, I can never figure it out. :\

Alt tunings are the shit!

Indeed. Sonic Youth are the masters of alt tunings imo. :)

What kind of guitar(s) do you play?

Well, my two main ones atm are:

And you?. :)

OK, so instantly I checked out Stereolab on wiki (I definitely need to listen to more of them) and it says they were heavily influenced by krautrock. Why not delve into that genre?, that is if you haven't already. :)

I like how this thread is coming along btw, guys. :)

oh wow

those are them... forget that red one lol-
the robbins egg is the color i always think of for those, but im a sucker for wood grain(real wood anyway) and blue. so that would be a tough choice(why you have both i guess), but the top one would probably win - looking at a pictures anyway.

i guess you probably have a fender bass-man or something for those too... dayum.

i would still reach for an acoustic though

^^
I like the mustang, but i need to clean myself after seeing your jazzmaster (lee ranaldo ed.)...
(I have to say I woulda picked thurston's though--love the f*ing fat singles!!)

i play a tele, I need to get a camera to post a picture.
All my stuff's entry level as i decided to pick guitar up on a whim last june.
My pedals: digitech delay and boss sd-1 overdrive are way nicer than the shitty ibanez amp i play them through. I need to keep playing and learning before I get a better amp. I'll add pedals as I fancy though.
I like my tele, but def want to get another guitar in maybe another year or two.

I love kraturock and the sphere of influence accompanying. Maybe I'm just as not as much into beats etc. I like sound, first and foremost--and am kinda lazy when I play. I also like blues and some funk influenced stuff, but am constantly trying to put new tools in the box.
My favorite thing to do is make up tunings or find new and cool sounding chords.

Been listening to sonic youth all day too...you got a last.fm?
