Tomorrow I plan on making ether from starting fluid but I had a question about storage. How long can I store ether and how much and what kind of container. I want to make a lot at once but idk what to do about the peroxides. Also how can I carry ether around safety for use on the go

You're not going to "make ether" from starting fluid the way I think you are going to try (water washes); you'll end up with a bunch of heptane and other shit in it. Unfortunately the only other way you're going to get the ether out of starting fluid would be distilling it but that's an excellent way to cause a massive fire or explosion if you're inexperienced with lab glassware and procedures.

Ether, when freshly distilled and without any sort of stabilisers, should be stored in a cool, dark place preferably in a metal tin or brown glass bottle for no longer than a month before getting tested for peroxides and thrown out. Stabilised ether from chemical houses will last on the order of years rather than months, but should still be tested regularly (either with peroxide test strips or there's a reagent test too). Impure ether will degrade more rapidly than pure stuff. I think, but am not 100% sure, that storage over iron II salts (ferrous sulphate e.g.) will help prevent peroxide formation.

Ether is highly, highly volatile and flammable. It should be stored (and used) in a well-ventilated place away from any spark source. I really don't reccomend carrying ether around anywhere - it fucking stinks for one, boils below body temperature, and if you ever have the pleasure of meeting an open flame with it you will be unrecognizable after all the skin grafts you'd get. If you absolutely have to transport it, brown glass bottles with Teflon liners for the caps would be best. Be careful opening bottles of ether that have been warmed; they build pressure inside quite easily.

Bear in mind ether will eat or soften natural rubber and some plastics (polycarbonate etc. HDPE should be fine) so keep it away from those seals and Nalgene bottles.

Ether is not a recreational drug. It stinks and is too dangerous to handle to use it with any regularity. If you're going to inhale it, regard it as a scientific curio rather than something to be done to "get fucked up", and for safety's sake don't try to handle large quantities of ether unless you really know what you're doing.

Please do not post things like that... before you know it people get confused what is sarcasm and what isn't.

In any case ether is not a psychedelic. PD >> OD

Taken care of. UA'd that post. We don't see much Ether discussion, so I don't have any problem letting this hang for a bit.. See if it generates any quality discussion. We dont' allow for synth discussion, though, so we aren't here to tell you how to "make' Ether. And you certainly aren't going to 'make' ether from 'starter fluid'.

This has bad news written all over it, but like many other things, it hangs in thy balance.

This entire thread is a bad idea.

You need to store it in a sealed, opaque container in a well-ventilated area away from ANY possible ignition source (hint, this is not your bedroom, bathroom, etc.) You need to keep it under a fume hood, honestly. If its PROPERLY stored (which is sounding like a slightly remote possibility here) it should be disposed of after six months, but age, impurities and exposure to light will all cause the formation of explosive peroxides and this can occur much earlier if its improperly stored.

And sorry to disappoint you, but there is no handy-dandy safe container to carry ether around with for use "on the go."

ok so even the unpure ether extracted from starter fluid is too unstable to be carried around?

if it boils at such a low temp. how does the bottle of starter fluid not release the same explosive gases?

how should I go about storing the ether in my house? I dont have anywhere else cool enough but of course there are sources of "spark" around.

^Bro, did you not read any of the above posts? You can't just 'make' or 'extract' some Ether, throw it in an old Svedka bottle and put it under your night table next to your bed.. It'll fuckin' blow up. And yes, the 'unpure' ether will form the explosive peroxides FASTER thus degrading the quality and causing potential for a fatal mis-hap. This isn't fear and loathing in las vegas, and you ain't Johnny Depp. Although you may be Charlie Sheen, you sure ain't Winning.

Please quit while you're ahead, can't you see why this is a really fucking dangerous idea? Do you have any chemistry knowledge, other than what you read on Totse and the Anarchist's Cookbook?

I'm sorry for sounding condescending, but I seriously don't want something bad to happen to you when you seem to be ignoring the inherent dangers involved in this under-taking.

OP, please check out that MSDS amapola posted above. In short, yes, even your ether/heptane mixture will be unsafe to store like you're planning to.

Closed. PM me if you have any questions about this.
