Water filters out the water-soluble stuff, gases like nitric oxide, carbon monoxide, etc. and cools the smoke. Some THC is lost, but mostly due to condensation rather than dissolving in the water. (THC is soluble but only a few milligrams per litre of water)

MAPS/NORML did a study on this. Take it with a grain of salt though, they didn't analyze the gasous phase of cannabis smoke.

But still, it wasnt analyzed in the study.

What wasn't analyzed? The exact composition of what's dissolving into the water? There are definitely analyses of marijuana smoke condensate; here's one of the free ones. I would imagine most of not all of the non-organic compounds are sparingly soluble in water; the amines are liable to form salts too. THC is soluble in water but only sparingly. (0.28 g/100 mL at 23 C, Merck index 13th ed.) You're going to lose a lot more due to dissolution in the oils from the smoke that condense.

Bongs reduce the amount of THC in the smoke. They also reduce water soluble tars, particulate matter, and cool the smoke. Yhis has the result of increasing the percentage of non-water-soluble compounds usually refered to as "tar". That much is clear. If you need more information please elaborate deeper than "that wasn't covered".

When I first started smoking herb there were not vaporizers around and everyone just would tell you that if you were worried about your lungs/respiratory system just to get a bong and smoke out of it because it would cool the smoke.

Thankfully vaporizers have made leaps and bounds and they're no longer highly expensive and if you do your research you can get one that works very effectively and won't make you go broke paying for it.

Yeah I agree if your looking for the best and healthiest way to get high it is definitely gotta be vaporizing

Smoke a stemless with the best honeycomb diffuser in the tube you can afford. That in and of itself does worlds more than most things. With just that, i could be content using just the bong and bowl. The stemless bong with honeycomb was like $250, and it is one of the most effective pipes for its simplicity that i have ever seen.

The ash-catcher i put on is a stemless showerhead diffuser as well.

The bowl was bought in response to a friend bitching about how small the one that came with it was. It makes the smoke vortex and it catches a pretty decent amount of the ash which keeps the water cleaner overall.

I can clean it to this degree in about 20 minutes. water is poured into 2 places. there is a clip for the ash-catcher and bong to hold them together for safety, but it wasnt on there for the picture.

More or less, you can fill the bowl with headies and clear it without coughing if you don't have sensitive lungs.

Water is polar, THC is non polar.

You know when you pour some olive oil into boiling water and it just stays on top? Think of the oil as THC only in a vapor form.

If it does absorb any, the amount is low. It turns burning plant matter into tasty air that fucks you up.

SYN stands for "Smoke Yourself Numb" and it is very very easy to do with this.

I have smoked out of volcanoes that cost more than twice what this piece did. With ice in the tube, it is just as easy on the lungs. I would rather rip a bong than sucking on a bag of vapor anyway.

Okay, I'm sorry I asked to many questions in a question, but really my main concern is, are water pieces really better for you, rather then smoking a bowl or lighting a joint?
In your link it says,
"Nonetheless, it is still premature to judge that waterpipes are actually unhealthful, since they may filter out other, non-solid smoke toxins occurring in the gas phase of the smoke, which was not analyzed in the study."
Also, "Disappointingly, waterpipes performed uniformly worse than the unfiltered joint. The least bad waterpipe, the bong, produced 30% more tar per cannabinoids than the unfiltered joint."
I thought joints were worse for you?
I'd like some facts as to why people say that using a bong is a lot cleaner for you when clearly, it hasn't been proven.

Think about it this way (these aren't actual numbers, but they accurately reflect the situation):

When you smoke a joint, the smoke that enters your lungs is 50% THC and 50% tar, resin, all that nasty shit.

When you smoke through any kind of water-filtration device, the smoke that enters your lungs is 40% THC and 60% tar, resin, all that nasty shit.

Joint smoke is harsher on your respiratory system because it's still hot, and water-filtered smoke is easier on your respiratory system because it's cooled down. Because of that, bongs allow you to take larger pulls than joints and also to hold your hits in for longer, and thus get you high faster than a joint would, even though the THC to tar ratio is lower in water-filtered smoke than smoke from a joint.

Keep in mind, though, that this is secondhand information. I haven't done any research of my own to back this up, just read reports on other peoples' research.

it boggles my mind that the unfiltered joint produced more tar than the bong.

it might produce more tar in your lungs using the bong compared to a joint if you just let the joint sit burning in your mouth without actually actively smoking it. All the tar ends up in the air.

Woo hoo, you can lie with statistics.

The goal is to get the damn smoke into your lungs and get high. I don't see why comparing not smoking it with it being pulled through water compared to being pulled through water would do anything except clean it.

Whether or not someone has done a scientific study or not, on a note of personal opinion. Joints are wasteful. a comparison of a bowl and a bong would be a better comparison. I would rather have a cooler smoke than burning plant matter going directly to my lungs. You know those times when you hit a bowl and some charred plant matter gets sucked into your throat and it sucks. That never happens.

And try to look into who funds the study.... Results can be pushed in any sort of direction with these things. Think about the information that probably should have been there but was never published.

Joints are wasteful primamrily because of the uncontrolled combustion that they entail. Of course they also produce the most tar relative to any other smoking method simply because there is no filtration whatsoever, not even in the form of removing particulates of unburned tar/plant matter.

One-hitters and pipes alleviate this by allowing you to only burn what you inhale. They also provide a small amount of cooling thanks to the pipe stem.

Bongs will reduce the amount of THC per litre of smoke as well as the amount of water-soluble tar and total particulate matter. Diffusers and ash catchers will improve this process, but it's one of these diminishing returns games then (you remove more THC and increase the proportion of tars to THC by adding more water filtration. Like has been stated before, water pipes also remove gaseous contaminants and cool the smoke down. (hot smoke is one of the main factors in marijuana-related damage)

Just smoke your dope and be happy. Smoke less or switch to a less harsh method like eating edibles or vapourization if you are worried about tars, etc.

I don't believe its much healthier at all. Maybe marginally, but it wouldn't be enough to justify switching if you were more content with another method of ingestion. The only method worth switching too based purely on health concerns is vaporization, and do your research first.

smoke is just unhealthy man

get a vape if u care about ur lungs, u wont be dissapointed with a decent one

Jamaica, no one said anything about different smoking methods producing more tar over others. Weed is weed... if you burn it, the amount of "tar" produced is going to be fairly consistent from one bud to the next.

The filtration has nothing to do with smoke production, it's all about changing the composition of the smoke after it's produced. Water fucks with the ratio of THC to tar by the time you inhale it, but it has no effect whatsoever on how much tar is initially put into your smoke because water is not a part of marijuana combustion with regards to smoking.

And yes, you can lie with statistics. Researchers can lie about research as well. The trick is learning how to weed good scientific research from the... err... not so good. I fucking hate straw men.

[Edit: I didn't read the links provided in this thread, though, so if that's what you're referring to then I apologize for being so hasty in trying to contradict you.]

the way I see it, a bong is healthier than a joint solely because you're not inhaling paper... shit im blazed right now this could be really stupid but it seems like common sense to me?

Hahaha! A+, dude, A+.

Honestly, I think the smoke-composition differences amongst the numerous smoking methods are so minute that they shouldn't even be considered. I feel as though the results of the study on this was worded in a propagandist way, essentially to make all forms of pot-smoking look unhealthy in the public eye.

If you actually take your time to read the the link provided by Sekio it says the examination was sponsored by NORML and MAPS. Now listen I never based this on my knowledge, I clearly stated where I got the information, you guys are getting out of hand. I'm not comparing anything, joints and bongs, whatever. I just want to know why do people claim bongs are healthier for them. some facts supporting your answer would be awesome.

I saw one day at a headshop, they had a bong that had this adapter over the bowl piece, and connected to that was a tube that ran to a vapor brothers vaporizer. So it looked like the best of both worlds, you could still vaporize so it is cleaner, but still have it go through the water so it would cool down the vapor and make it not as harsh. I have never tried one, but am pretty interested in how they hit and if it is worth getting.

My friend had a vaporizer (wooden box model) with the rubber tubing protruding out of it. I used to take off the rubber tubing, and attach one end to the end of a oil burner (meth pipe), then take the bowl piece out of the slider in my bong, and stick the other end of the rubber tubing down the bong stem. Then I'd load up the oil burner (meth pipe) with hash oil and rip away, running the lighter under the oil burner while I hit. You could clear the bong like normal by sliding the rubber tubing out. I think this is probably the most intense and instant 'rush' I've ever been able to achieve with cannabis. Its wonderful.

I've been a daily smoker for a while now. I've hit bongs and other water pipes numerous of times before. Yes, it is alot smoother (well if its not a huge rip...) but what does the water actually filter out? Couldn't some THC be filtered out as well? Does anyone have any facts to back up this question?

Water cools the smoke making it easyer to smoke it also catchs alot of the tars and stops cherrys from shooting into your mouths witch no one likes......

not really healthier as you are still inhaling burnt plant matter, but it cools the smoke allowing smoother hits. (if you arent used to bongs its still a bit much)
