Good Documentaries

^^ Agree mate. Only watched half of it so far, but it's such an original topic. Energy in action, and vision. A great demonstration of the transition of energy.

Aha well keep going mate, it only gets really good towards the end when they discuss the philosophy behind it all. Its probably the first time in years I've actually watched TV and had to think in some way, it was a peculiar but good feeling!

Let us know what you think, I loved it!

EDIT...
also just watched this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8UFQ1Pfmbs
(2 other parts on youtube as well, im sure you'll find them)

Short documentary about Paul Bocuse, the legend of french cuisine who is credited with inventing Nouvelle cuisine in the 70s. An absolute legend.

Great documentary on Mandrax smoking in South Africa's West Cape. This drug is rare outside of Souther Africa (Nambia and the Cape town Area). The only country were you can still get methaqualone Rx is Switzerland and its only limited to Swiss citizens or residents if i'm not mistaken

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtCClK5bWkU

Here is a link. Its a strong getto drug thats smoked over their in a pipe fashioned out of a glass bottle.

This shows mandrax smoking at the begining and end (26:15 into documentary). The rest has some interesting drug stories but I would fast forward.

Methaqualone Thread

Lots of info on methaqualone (mandrax, qualuudes), their history, old timers stories, up to the current scene in South Africa towards the end in addition to the discovery that the Aparteid security force introduced it into the townships to undermine the efforts of the ANC to end aparteid. A scene still exists for this drug but Tik (methamphetamine) smoked is rapidly replacing it. Their was a good documentary on TIK on Al Zazera world services.

By the way, the diphenhydramine in mandrax was originally added in that it interferes with its metabolism raising plasma levels of methaqualone. Aparently, it was used in the 70s alot to enhance sex. Most recently, a lude ring was busted in New York and the Bay Area. The clientel were wealthy people from Manhattan mostly, but in South Africa it is a straight ghetto drug (they were using it orally in manhattan), smoke it in Southern Africa. Supposedly very euphoric high blowing benzos out of the water.

Me too, look like they having fun- but its is a very ghetto scene: Apparently they sometimes have to worry about friends jacking your stuff while you falling down from the initial rush- forget the terminolgy they use. Thankx Shambles, glad that someone took the time to watch it:)- it gets prety real.

I've watched two very different but equally good documentaries in the past couple of days.

The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia

The second one is absolutely bonkers lol. It's got me listening to country music, Hank 3 %)

I found out about them from the song Hank III wrote about them, it's on his best album.

Have you watched the film White Lighting? You can find it online, good to watch after you been chasing pv for a few days

Looks great that, TLM. Dowloaded earlier and will watch soon :)

Few nice PooToob channel linkies for anyone interested: mostly sciencey-type stuff and also mostly full-length instead of chopped into 10 minute chunks - PortugueseR3dMoon, leosupercluster, ScienceandSpaceHD, Br4ZuCa - that last one has some nice tunes too :)

Also started watching Cosmos again whilst coming down from that megatrip t'other day. Probably one of the best series ever made and still a corker even if some of the info is slightly outdated now. One that everybody should see. Psyches not necessary to appreciate... but don't hurt the appreciation one lil bit =D

Amazing documentary. Got it all on dvd, can watch it over and over and still be blown away.

Really good Attenborough doc about Madagascar on BBC recently. It's here.

^^Aww guys, now ya talking. Carl Sagan was a god. Actually, he probably is a god now *waves*

I got the series for xmas, and will be starting to watch again soon. How does it stand up to aging? It pains me to say, but I watched it way back when it was originally aired. Nothing had a bigger impact on my outlook on life. The series was a masterpiece, but the man was/is a legend.

Panorama on Wikileaks right now, not sure how impartial it is as it's the BBC. Funny how they're using the Dr Dre 2001 album as the backing music. when they were saying Assange dodged an interview with them, they had the 'Bitch Niggaz' song on lol.

I didn't know that existed. I'm gonna download it the now. Nice one!

No idea what this is, looks cool as fuck though. Also gonna get downloaded.

Just finished watching that Shinobi doc - was a goody. Particularly liked the emphasis on non-sensationalism, historical detail and all the artwork. Would've liked a bit more in the way of interviews and stuff with Japanese cos it was a bit Yank-heavy but they certainly seem to know their stuff at least. Shame the budget didn't stretch to a translator too - the bit with the American fella trying to talk through the family history of the great, great, great X 19 descendant of some famous warrior with no common language was slightly painful... but also kinda heart-warming in an odd way. The section on "The Last True Battle Experienced Ninja" was also great - would make for a fascinating doc in its own right cos he had one hell of a life story for such relatively recent times. Good stuff :)

It holds up surprisingly well. There are a few details here and there were knowledge has moved on so aren't quite accurate anymore - and obviously loads of recent discoveries are absent but there are short introductory updates on some versions - some presented by an aged Sagan himself. Even the oldskool special effects retain a certain charm... but the psyches probably helped there. The narration and overall philosophy and outlook of it are still absolutely masterful though so still just as relevant as ever, I'd say :)

And some more recommendations - been watching loads recently.

Can't recall if I mentioned these before but I really enjoyed Through the Wormhole. Definitely "pop science" stuff but covers some fairly well-trodden territory much better than most of its ilk. The info seems to be far more up to date than most and there is some fascinating stuff on the more esoteric areas of current theory. Morgan Freeman presents it too if you like that kinda thing.

Another one I really enjoyed recently was What Happened Before the Big Bang?. A Horizon take on one of the same topics covered in the above series. Goes into more detail and is bit more "grown-up" in general. Not as flashy on the visual front though. And no Morgan Freeman if you don't like that kinda thing.

It may have been mentioned, but this new Attenborough documentary about Madagascar is fucking ace! :)
I've always found this area of the world to be utterly amazing in terms of it's Geology and wildlife, and this just amplifies it x1000 ^_^

Yay fi Sir Attenborough man dem! %)

Yeah I saw that one. The content was inspiring, but what was with the sparklers they used for effects!

Totally right Mr Noodle. There is something so beautifully surreal about that place. Would be wild to be tripping on those shores indeed 8o

Coupla corkers for the recommending of - Krautrock: The Rebirth of Germany is a goody about the history of... well... Krautrock. Loads of great bands covered including a few I was unaware of but may have to look up now. Good stuff :)

Also, Outlaw Comic: The Censoring of Bill Hicks is brilliant. Have long been a fan but never knew quite how unpopular/unheard of he was in the US. Mainly due to having to play to audiences of morons and being censored whenever he got on television. Mainly a biography but with the emphasis on the censorship angle with some great performance footage much of which isn't just the usual clips that get shown endlessly. Quite a bit from the rather infamous show in Chicago where he lost it with the audience in a big way throughout the whole show. Well worth tracking down the full-length performance of that one if you've not already seen it cos it's blinding. Finishes with the uncut routine that was removed from his last appearance on the Letterman show shortly before he died too.

And one more to recommend - What is Reality? is a fascinating Horizon doc about... have a guess. Some interesting stuff about quantum computing (and the difficulties of working with a machine that only does what it is supposed to if nobody is looking at it :D) amongst other things. Was the one I though Chinup would enjoy if she happens to pop in to see this :)

PS: Forgot to mention The Lobotomist. Tis a biography of Walter Freeman (creator of the trans-orbital lobotomy (the one that's just banging an icepick through your eye socket)) and a bit of history of how mental health problems were dealt with not so long ago. Bit of an eye-opener when you see quite how reckless the fella got in the end. And was a bit of an egomaniacal butcher to start off with. Interesting doc though :)
