Misc any stimulant that doesn't induce tolerance? (for medicinal use)

i suffer from clinical depression and ocd. the depression is rather severe and as a consequence i have very low self confidence, horrible social anxiety, EXTREME lethargy, etc.

i've been on prozac, effexor, and risperdal, but none of them helped and some just made the depression worse (risperdal). it's safe to say ssri's have no effect on me at all (except maybe making me overly emotional), but that's all my psych will prescribe (or antipsychotics, which will just worsen my situation)

via recreational drug use i found that what i need to help me with my depression isn't a depressant/sedative (i've used benzo's and they just made me oblivious and unproductive) but in fact a stimulant (adderall COMPLETELY solved my depression problem along with the lethargy, social anxiety, and etc.). the only problem is that due to my record of drug abuse i'm pretty sure i won't be prescribed any abusable substances (i.e. methylphenidate, amphetamines, etc.) and even if i was prescribed them, tolerance would be a problem.

so basically i need something that will give me a sense of well-being, motivation, and energy but at the same time without inducing tolerance (sounds too good to be true).

i've heard that wellbutrin (bupropion) has methylphenidate-like effects without the addiction/tolerance problem. is this true? what other antidepressant medications can have this effect?

any advice would be greatly appreciated as i can no longer manage this depression on my own. thanks.

Such a thing doesn't exist. Try sporadic use of modafinil, a high-protein diet, excercise, vitamins/minerals, etc.

May I ask, what dosage was sufficient to eliminate your symptoms?

Bupropion might be worth a try, but don't get your hopes up.

Modafinil is less tolerancey than other stimulants, but it still does eventually build tolerance.

i used 60 mg of adderall XR, which is a moderate dose i believe.

60mg Adderall XR is at the top end of what I would call a "moderate" dose.

Some psychs will script amphetamines for depression if other options don't work, and it sounds like thats whats happening to you.

Sekio is right, basically all stimulants will eventually cause tolerance. That's just the name of the game.

As others have said, there really are not any true stimulants that will not induce a tolerance.

As far as treating your symptoms, modafinil (as already reccomended) may be a good choice. Memantine has also been tested with depression and obssessive-compulsive disorder, so it might be a good option. Selegiline may also be useful. Keep in mind that although it metabolizes to amphetamines, the clinical effects are thought to be from the compound itself.

panax ginseng, siberian ginseng, gotu kola. All are stimulants that do not produce much tolerance as long as they are rotated every once in a while.
