QLD Floods

OUr suburb has its usual creeks flooding and bein cut off. My work has been evacuated and i think it will go under by the predictions of the press. Ive been sick and almost over my sickness and this happens....ah i think there will be alot of cleaning up to do.

Been sand bagging this evening. I am fucking buggered. No idea if the water will reach us but we are only a few blocks from the river. The only thing saving us will be the slight rise of the land. The spanner in the works is the ridiculous amount of water flowing. There are 2 Sydney harbours exiting the dam gates every day for the past 2-3 days. Petrol stations were cued around corner (apparently in '74 they ran out of petrol) and the supermarket was picked clean.

Going to sleep now and wait and see how things pan out in the morning. All I know is work can go fuck itself. In the words of Mr Wilson, "Stack the fridge and stoke the bong, I'm staying home tonight". ;)

It's funny how they call it a 100 year flood as by all calculations it seems to happen every 40 years... 1893, 1931, 1974, 2011....

I couldn't sleep last night so kept checking the river near me at Kangaroo Point. It's now well and truly above the river walk and lapping up on the footpath heading to the road. Pretty cool! There are yachts, boats, pontoons, boats on pontoons, and various bits of junk flying down the river. Also very cool to watch! Unless you happen to own one of those ghost trains...

Well I'm taking Mr Wilsons advice too. Plenty of people to help on the lower floors and then must get into the beer fridge!

There has been so much talk of the predicted flood to hit Brisbane, but everyone should spare a thought for the people of Grantham who were hit on Monday by an 8m wall of water that rushed down the range after deluging Toowoomba. 10 people confirmed dead, dozens missing. This is unbelievable. People were literally washed out of their houses and down the floodway, with little warning.

:(:(

^ yeh the river levels there are supposed to reach 22m today. It's nuts. My condolences to the friends and families of the deacesed and missing in Toowoomba and surrounds.

:( Looks like I might have to evacuate my place this afternoon (in Indooroopilly). Brisbane river is supposed to peak at 4.5m this afternoon and 5.5m tomorrow. FFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

List of affected streets/suburbs

I hope everyone is safe!!!!!

^ That's heavy brother, hope you have friends or family you can stay with?

We are fine here, down the road is closed off and several other streets around here are or will be flood affected. I'm going to head out later to see what's happened around the place and maybe take some pictures.

^ haha yeh I've had a few offers for places to stay but the road to my place is cut off:

I can still get out if I don't mind getting my feet wet though. I should be okay so long as the river doesn't get much higher than predicted. I'll grab some more photos when it's at its peak this afternoon.

Energex is cutting off power to a lot of central Brisbane throughout the morning too.

^ Damn, hope you get out OK and your place doesn't get too wet.

I'm about to go to the supermarket, see if there is anything left on the shelves. :)

Good luck all. I may be heading up there soon to help out with the electrical recovery. I have volunteered my business and some electrical friends to form a team to go up.

Is there anyone out there that has actually been flooded that I can talk to in order to get a better understanding of what is needed before I go up?

If so then please pm me. Cheers.

^
We should have a QLD Floods Disaster thread, no?

I moved those posts, anyone think of a better thread title?

I've had lots of phonecalls asking if I'm okay, worst that can happen to me is that I can get stranded. It's okay because the local RSL is the emergency evac point and they have a 24 hours license...

Where in QLD are you going? If it's to the areas outside Brisbane, be prepared for short supplies of almost everything. They are trying to move things in, not sure how fast they are able to move supplies in though.

Cheers mate. I understand it will be to the Ipswich and or Sth Brisbane areas but they will confirm in the next day or so.
I plan to take my usual camping gear so i will be self supporting in all aspects for at least a week or more however it may be that I will need to share that with others in need so I will take extra water and food etc.
Im currently waiting to get word back from Qld as it may be we will be starting a campaign down here to get more sparkies involved.

^ Ah, OK. The worst is yet to hit Brisbane, but Ipswich is starting to go under. It will probably be harder to get supplies in Ipswich then in Brisbane; most of Ipswich is affected whereas large parts of Brisbane won't be. Shouldn't be as bad as other parts of SEQLD though.

That's great you will be helping out! They are shutting off the power grid in the CBD, I think substation by substation, in order to prevent fires breaking out as they are hit by the waters. The tide is going to peak around 3 or 4 this afternoon and then a bigger tide tomorrow so we will see what happens.

Also, if you need somewhere in inner-south Brisbane to stay that has not been affected, hit me up, we have a spare room. :)

We have left our place and headed to the hills. The water is still a way away from our house but a lot of the roads into Bulimba are slowly being cut. The power will be off soon so we have decided there isn't much we can do if the water does reach our house particularly when it peaks sometime in the middle of the night. Just going to have to wait it out now until Saturday/Sunday and then assess the damage.

If any one asks we had a rare Picasso given to me my my grand dad hanging in the kids rooms. ;)
