Get the hell off your high horses. Sure, you guys might not have done this, but shit, it's in the past, and he's sharing his experiences with us. Isn't that what this forum is meant to be about? Sweet zombie Christ, check your egos, the three of you. Besides:

So it's not like he's "going across the nation, spreading LSD to all the animals" or anything nutso like that. You act like he's some kind of menace. the three of you are no better than the prohibitionist crowd.
___
Where do I start?
1: Humans kill each other without psychedelics. Few species do that.
2: Who are you to suggest they don't get anything out of the experience? For all we know, they might get more out of it than we do.
3: Modern humans are simply domesticated primates, and to deny that we still have our instincts would be an outright lie. Lots of things go on in our heads, but those of us who are given the opportunity to think for ourselves will always work out a peaceful moral framework in their own mind.
4: By the above criteria I see nothing inherently "wrong" with dosing a pet. If it were up to me, I'd need to know they wanted to experience what I have experienced, which is really something only a very close friend could tell past the species barrier.
Are you seriously suggesting that A: humans are the only animals with a useful memory-span, and B: any one of us actually understands the psychedelic experience?
You best not give any to friends who might just like tripping with good company. By your logic, the only people who should ever trip are particle physicists and mathematicians. Anything less would be wasteful.
First off, it's not so much a debate of whether or not animals have the mental capacity to gain from the psychedelic experience.. You're missing these people's points completely and acting as if these people are saying only humans are smart enough to do LSD, when in fact this isnt the case at all buddy. This is where your whole "get off your high horse" mentality seems to be stemming from.
What troubles people is that you're giving some animal that dosn't even have any concept of a brain is, what perception is, what a drug is, you're intentionally putting a drug into the animals blood without their consent or even their fucking
understanding of whats happening at all. And just hoping they will gain something positive from it...
Do you see the problem that arrises here mate? What if i dosed you unknowingly, justifying it by thinking hey he will have some neat insights into his life and his relationship to reality, might forever appreciate art on a deeper level. Then you comedown and i tell you what i did, you would be mad angry with me and what an irresponsible thing to do ect.. Oh but i thought you would derive some gain from it, does that justify dosing you unknowingly.
Now think about it there is some HUMANS that take psychedelics and fully miss the point and do not derive any positive gain from their use, and sometimes even experience extreme fear and panic. Now do you really think a fucking dog is going to drop lsd and gain anything positive from it? Think about the level of fear that a fucking usually rational human who understands what is happening to them they understand the concept of whats causing their distress yet the level of distress is still insanely high, imagine the kind of stress an animal goes through during the peak of the trip, something that dosnt even understand why everything is all different, thats all the dog perceives.
To put it into perspective for you the dog obviously experiences psychedelic disturbances, but it lacks the mental structure to put it back into perspective/intregrate the trips insights back into its everyday reality. Dogs dont think and have memories like humans do. The changes in perception are just scary and weird to the dog, they're not insightful, dogs just dont have the brain to perceive in this way you're hoping they do. I mean also their eyes only perceive a fraction of the electromagnetic spectrum compared to us so they're not seeing amazingly colourful fractals like you might imagine.
So maybe after reading this you can go get off your high horse, face the facts that if some humans dont enjoy psychedelics how the fuck is an animal that dosn't even understand the concept of perception and how it works going to enjoy the experience and derive anything from it?
So yeah just get it through your head that it's totally not getting on your high horse for condemning someone for having given something a drug without it's permission, even if the creature would't understand even if you tried to explain. A fully grown adult with good judgement would come to this conclusion.
Also; benzos(friends dog is prescribed 1mg xanax for storm season), painkillers(my dog has been scripted tramadol a couple times) and dissociatives(well only one i think ketamine) are used medically on animals but thats totally different to dosing an animal psychedelics. Benzos or opioids arent going to produce intense fear and stress in an animal, some could argue the k hole dogs may experience could be comparable to an lsd trip(in mental confusion caused from both drugs) and used as justification that dosing your dog on lsd is an okay thing to do.. But think about it the dogs are given a dose where they're out fucking cold, and its kinda choosing the lesser of two evils so to speak, whats worse the stress of confusion caused by the ketamine or the stress of surgery with full sensory awareness? This is much different to giving your dog a recreational drug experience haha.
I'm not saying dogs can't in contrast to the above feel positive and increased euphoric feelings as well, but the chance for overwhelming negative emotion/feeling is very high compared to medicinally used drugs, and like i said generally in the medical situation, there is full justification for giving dogs drugs.
So it really comes down to, giving your dogs drugs dosn't equate to animal abuse and i know you guys really love your animals as i do, but it just seems like a waste of drugs and very stupid thing to do when you consider all of what i've jotted down here..
