At this Margate head shop, classic rock plays, incense wafts and the owner fumes. One month ago, a state law went into effect that prohibits him from selling water pipes, air pipes and hookahs. The state now classifies those items as ``drug paraphernalia'' . . .

As of July 1, Florida law makes it a first-degree misdemeanor for a store to sell paraphernalia . . .

``This is what happened with porn,'' Work says. ``They put in so many regulations that the small adult stores couldn't survive . . .

A lawsuit, filed in Hillsborough County, is the latest chapter in a morality play that started in the Capitol and spilled into cyberspace . . .

The law's main proponent, Rep. Darryl Rouson, a St. Petersburg Democrat, is a former crack addict who has made it his duty to rid the state of illegal drugs . . .

Head shop owners ``are cowards who hide through the Internet,'' Rouson says . . .

Rouson says he could speak so authoritatively because he's been there . . .

When his second wife died, Rouson says he spent $60,000 of life insurance money on cocaine in six months . . .

``I was determined to be a man, to be free of drugs and raise my son,'' Rouson says . . .

The legalization wave across the country infuriates him. So Rouson has vowed to be a one-person barrier to such a movement . . .

Fuckin born-again anti-druggies.
Ruining all of the fun for those of us who use drugs responsibly.

Water pipes, etc. can be used for tobacco.

They remove carcinogens from the smoke, and also cool the temperature of the smoke, reducing damage to the oral cavity and throat, as well as the lungs, presumably.

What a shame that they are the latest to go, making the victims of this inane war on drugs more susceptible to cancer and other damage from smoke.

"America is a free country" rings more and more hollow each day.

I bought every piece I own in Hillsborough county. They have some nice shops around there :\

The pipes are sold for tobacco use only and the shops can be quite strict about even saying the word 'bong' in the store.

This is indeed a step backwards in reguard to personal liberty. Whats next to put thrown on the banned wagon? Paper?

Rouson says he could speak so authoritatively because he's been there . . .

Yeah me to.. 8)

But his opinion is more legitimate because he used his drugs with less responsability.

why would headshops matter to a cokehead?
what would they want a bong for?
why is cocaine use relevant to a store that (essentially) sells MJ paraphernalia.
ive never met anyone who smokes tobacco out of a glass pipe, sorry. We all know its true..

But that isnt the fault of the shop owner. Just like how there arent thousands of people at gas stations across the country who need a tiny rose in a glass tube and brillo pad for cleaning everynight. ;)

Hey, its not as bad as where I live.

My city is run by the church (apparently), our one and only head/sex shop got closed down a few years ago by the church. We're not even allowed a strip club...

However, you can buy bongs from newsagents and general shops (that tend to be run by those of a Pakistani origin ;)) here so it made no difference whatsoever.

Head shop owners ``are cowards who hide through the Internet,'' Rouson says . . .

Headshops are just that, shops. Some may have websites, but I fail to see how they hide through the internet.

Man I hate people who used to get high and now go on a crusade to "save people", they need to mind their fucken own.

This is comeplete bullshit. I saw that guy on the news a bit back talking about this. Just because he was pathetic enough to spend $60,000 of death benifits from his wife on cocaine in six months doesn't mean he should denye people the right to buy pipes used for marijuana and to put hard working Americans out of buisness in this hard economy. How is this even going to stop people from smokeing? I already have pipes and could already order more over the internet. This guy needs to realsise that not every drug user is a stupid and weak minded as him. If he is so against drugs then why isn't he pushing to make alcohol illegal?

How is this constitutional? If someone were to fight it, I smell a supreme court win.

You can't ban something because it may be misused. What's next? Papers?

Glass pipes = harm reduction. Smoking out of plastic = not good for u.

Thats the reason why they have not been banned in this country.

I thought head shops sold bongs for "tobacco use only"...

Whatever will I use to smoke my tobacco with if they're banned? ;)

Bong ban?

THANK GOD!

I'm so relieved, for a second I thought this dude was trying to ban bongos. Ya know, to run all the dirty beatniks out of town.

politicians are idiots... how is banning bongs gonna stop drug users. history has shown that when u push down drugs in one category they pop up in another....

Reminds me of what had just happened when I first moved to China.
At Peking University, there had been used condoms found by the benches surrounding some of the lakes on campus.
This was a cause of concern to the authorities, since students should not be having sex.
So, they solved the issue very thoughtfully... by removing the benches.:|
