[National] Federal Election - 21st August 2010

I hope this doesn't entirely hijack this thread but...

On the topic of the immigration policies, my Father swears black and blue that anyone turning up in a boat is highly unlikely to be a refugee because what kind of refugee can afford to pay thousands of dollars to a people smuggler? I'm inclined to think it's a good point. Anyone else have an opinion on this?

^^ Well, it's a good point, but think about it: over an entire lifetime people will have aquired items, or heirlooms (pieces of jewelry, furniture etc) that could easily be sold to afford that trip. Not to mention that refugees are not necessarily poor to begin with, they are simply persecuted in their country of origin. Most people who come here through such a drastic means are trying to escape other things than just financial difficulty.

I guess as a 2nd generation migrant I have a soft spot for immigration policy... but still, I do not think that allowing people to immigrate to Australia is such a huge social problem.

^ yeh from what I recall most of the people arriving on boats are eventually declared legitimate asylum seekers. The majority of illegal immigrants arrive by plane, with a visa, and overstay their official welcome. I'm somewhat of the opinion that the whole thing "illegal boat people" issue is a media/political beat up to stir the emotions of the electorate into a state of fear... That said it's interesting how simple changes of a policy or two can directly impact the number of boats arriving so dramatically... or maybe we're just hearing about more now?

*Dons tinfoil conspiracy helmet* =D

Some people take this entire business just way to seriously.

I have a dude on my facebook group who posts at least 2-3 anti labour slogans every day.

Stuff such as................

WE LET RUDD DUD US...
DON'T LET JULIA FOOL YA!

Sadly our beautiful country is half full of ignorant fools who believe the lies about man's influence on global warming as well as the flood of lies coming from the Communists disguising themselves as Labor. Half our population are... pardon my 'French'... F***ING IDIOTS!!!

and.........

The following is an announcement for the ignorant...

OUR FIRST "FEMALE" PRIME MINISTER, JULIA GILLARD, HAS AN ADAM'S APPLE!

THAT MERELY MAKES "HER" OUR SECOND TRANSVESTITE PRIME MINISTER (AFTER PAUL KEATING).

I mean.........juddy nora. Sadly i have to question the sanity of some of my facebook aquaintenances.

Even a return airfare from South America is only a couple of thousand dollars. It would be easier to fly in and then claim for refugee status. (Over 95% of asylum seekers actually arrive by air). A lot of these poor people actually have to pay off their debts once they have arrived in Australia.

Complaining about boat people and immigration in general is just red neck politics. We live in a time of extremely low unemployment and skilled workers shortage in many industries so I can't see how even 10 000 boat people a year would drastically affect our way of life. Politicians love appealing to the lowest common denominator because it is easier than actually facing real issues.

Immigrants to Australia have to pass strict background checks and are deemed suitable citizens before they are finally accepted to this country. The only qualification a locally born Australian ever needs is the ability for your dad to throw a leg over your mum in the back seat of a holden while parked in the car park of the local pub. If you have the skills and courage to face the open seas landing on an exposed beach in a country where you will face hostility then I believe you are exactly the type of person who should live here. If you can bowl off breaks on a flat deck and bat with a wristy flair the local cricket club is this way.

This election is a complete dud. Major policies such as the environment/ETS and the internet filter have been shelved so as they won't be debated. Has there even been an election promise yet that would be considered a choice between the two major parties?

My local MP is Krudd, who will no doubt get a massive sympathy vote before he pisses off mid term to China or the UN. It's times like this I miss Nigel Freemarijuana running for office. Now there was a donkey vote you could hang your hat on. :(

That pretty much sums it up right there! %)

The reality is that the economic impact (both micro and macro) of refugees, boat people or what ever you want to call them is rather negligible.

If voters are really that worried they should turf out all of the people over the age of 60 as they represent the segment of society having the most significant impact on economic variables.

This is where euthanasia needs to come in! Srsly, why are people so against euthanasia? I don't get it. I don't suppose the Greens are for it?

Here's an alternative party - www.sexparty.org.au

Here's a list of their policies

Censorship

* Bring about the establishment of a truly national classification scheme which includes a uniform non-violent erotica rating for explicit adult material for all jurisdictions and through all media including the Internet and computer games.

* Introduce an R and X rating for computer games

* To overturn mandatory ISP filtering of the Internet and return Internet censorship to parents and individuals.

* We oppose the mandatory retention of all Australian users’ internet browsing history and emails by ISPs for at-will inspection by law enforcement agencies, and support strong judicial oversight over the ability of law enforcement to access individuals’ internet and email data.

Education

* To bring about the development of a national sex education curriculum as a first step in preventing the sexualisation of children.

* Development of a national internet education scheme for parents.

Equality

* To enact national anti discrimination laws which make it illegal to unfairly discriminate against people or companies on the basis of job, occupation, profession or calling.

* To bring about equal numbers of women in the Parliament through enabling the Federal Discrimination Act to have jurisdiction extending to political parties.

* To create total equal rights in all areas of the law including same sex marriage.

* Overturn racist laws that ban adults living in and visiting aboriginal communities in the NT from possessing erotic and sexual media.

* Ensure the sexual rights and freedoms of people with a disability and the elderly.

Health

* To enact national pregnancy termination laws along the same lines as divorce law — which allow for legal, no-fault and guilt-free processes for women seeking termination.

* The listing of Viagra, Cialis and other drugs used to treat sexual dysfunction, on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.

* Overturn restrictions on aid to overseas family planning organisations that reference abortion.

Protection of Children

* Convene a Royal Commission into child sex abuse in the nation’s religious institutions.

* Develop global approaches to tackling child pornography which focus on detection and apprehension of the producers of the material.

Workplace Relations

* Ensure that the introduction of paid maternity leave is fair and equitable for small businesses.

* Abolish sex slavery and sexual servitude by introducing non morality-based immigration policies that allow bona-fide sex workers to work legally in Australia.

Small Business

* Federally granted airport properties to local communities via Council or Shire ownership not be permitted for on sale or lease to any developer that will not guarantee to maintain the current flying operational status and that the core activity of the development must be to retain a viable Aviation industry on the airfield property.

* The simplification and cost reduction for renewal of previously approved ASIC holders.

Other

* Ending the tax exempt status for religions.

There is work in progress on a drug reform policy also, keep an eye on the website for that. Fiona Patten is a member of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, a big fan of MAPS, a reader of Bluelight and very street savvy.

There are one or two policies in there that I'm not in full agreement with but most of their policies are a far cry from what is on offer from the rest of the party politics.

* Overturn racist laws that ban adults living in and visiting aboriginal communities in the NT from possessing erotic and sexual media.

This really is racist. I can't believe it's still going on.

Funny seeing all the empty beer bottles under the no alcohol or porn signs in the territory though!

Greens yo.

I agree that the Sex Party has some excellent policy work going on, but we need to vote realistically. They're not going to have any significant say anywhere - do they even have a lower house candidate? - so it's important to use your vote wisely.

Sure, Labor and the Libs are where the major power's at, but the balance of power is nothing to sneeze at either.

Greens, Greens, Greens.
