Mushroom season 2010

When I make my tea I usualy just boil the kettle and pour half a mug full of hot water and then add the teabag and some honey, followed by plenty of milk (flavoured if possible) and a couple of ice cubes. Then chuck in the powdered mushrooms.

No noticable loss of potency compared to eating whole - yuk! - and doesn't taste all that bad.
 
Regarding Smoking: In many years of tripping & being around tripping people I have never seen or got a buzz from smoking mushrooms. It looks like the melting point (according to the merk index) is pretty. The temperature at which the two chemicals break down may be very close to the melting point.

More importantly, large amounts of damage is done by oxidisation so the heat alone is not the only cause of damage to the substances during smoking or boiling.

Also from what I have heard extracts (crystals) are possible but tend to be unstable and don't last long unless very carefully stored.

Regarding drying:

The best I found was damp rid from major hardware stores, just don't let the chemical touch the mushrooms or you will end up with a nasty mess. Also it's possible to dry out the damp rid and use it again & again. Put the wet damp rid in an oven in a pyrex contain and put it on high for a few hours. The damp rid will melt down into a solid block before shedding all the moisture. Once it's cool just break it up and use again....
 
What are the benefits of having them in tea? Is it easier on the stomach? At the moment we have them in caps if dried or just straight down the hatch with some honey if still fresh.
 
I only make mushroom tea when I am using fresh mushrooms and would rather dose by way of pleasant drink than by eating a number of not so tasty mushrooms.

One major benefit is the quick absorption rate and fast come up of tea's in comparison to eating whole mushrooms.

I wouldn't say it's any easier on the stomach, as it is the mushroom alkaloids that cause the stomach upset, as much as the mushroom material. A few of us had a tea recently and we all had to chuck on the come up to settle our guts.

I either get bad guts or no stomach upset at all. Doesn't seem to matter if I dose on an empty or semi empty stomach, drink a tea or ingest the entire mushroom (fresh or dry). Some people get terrible nausea every time and other (iron gut) people never have any discomfort.
 
Yeah I think the best thing about drinking tea, is the quicker come up, the convenience once it's ready to go you can just chill out and sip away.

Also it's easy to monitor how much everyone has had in respect to each other. Because the potency of the tea should be evenly distributed so if we all have a cup of tea we all know we've had the same amount rather then people eating 5 small mushies to match someones 3 larger mushies etc.

And the flavour, it's a nice change from that mushie flavour and texture. Make it a tea with sugar, ginger and honey.
 
Thanks for the info guys. The quick come-up sounds like a bonus and I really like the idea of even dosing. I think I'll stick to caps but next time my mates and I find ourselves with fresh mushies I think we'll give tea a try. :-)
 
The intensity and speed of the onset of effects can be overwhelming if your used to eating capsules. I remember one time on 10-20 grams of dried mushrooms (tea but with all the brothy bits in the mix) I was walking back to from the kitchen (in a University College) and I hadn't made it back to my room before the frenzy started.

Be ready for it
 
i find the best way to ingest is to blend them up with orange juice, and there is no mushroom taste at all. i started out making tea but it wasn't for me. i find you still get a really quick come up with oj as well. and also you can dose everyone the same by putting enough shrooms for everyone in the blender and add 1cup of oj for each person. works a treat for me
 
Yeah definately the best option, if you've got caps set to go, then down the hatch.

But fresh tea is a nice change up =D


Mushroom and Orange juice ay?
If I had a blender I kid you not I would try it in the next week.
 
i really couldn't imagine going back to making tea, it really was terrible, for me anyway.. though some people swear by it, i suppose it's all down to personal preference

I got my maths screwed up one day and pretty much consumed all the tea from 10 medium-large Cubensis ... oh man , indescribable ofc ... but only time I actually thought it may be possible to OD on shrooms. 8o
(note : some may feel that 10 Cubes isn't alot ... this has always confused me when people say they eat 60 and what not , they are wrong ... and either it's a different species (like the cyans) ... or other than that , they are stronger and larger around here than elsewhere (just the weight amount alone , no one would possibly consider eating 60 of These shrooms ... hell even 20 would be more than 3 meals worth , even if they are mostly water ;)) ... ).

So yeh , The Tea ... I think TheStudent makes an excellent point ...
I have never studied the dissolvability , heat resistance and whatnot of shrooms but have made many teas ... I've always simmered for many minutes , maybe 20-ish ... I wait till they turn translucent so I know everything is out ... so this would be high temps for an extended amount of time. The potency of the tea , imho , is not degraded ... quicker onset or no ... Intense and it always lasts for as long you can stay awake , sometimes longer heheheh. %)

I had no idea that Psilocibin was so soluble in water ... so thanx Subnaut.

went to my humble adelaide spot today, got a very healthy amount, will make a great long weekend, got a photo of my favourite five.... almost certain these are subs, well regardless i have ate them many of times and tripped :P

Nice finds misteee

I can't wait to head west from melb this season and check out the bush subs. You get so many weird and wonderful looking subs in the bush. Certain characteristics are more common the further west you go...

I could link you to many sites explaining this extraction but it is this simple:

You will need: ethanol (or methanol), dry mushrooms, glass jar with lid (that seals well), coffee filters, pyrex tray (or shallow pan), electric fan, scales and something to measure liquids

1) Weigh out the amount of mushrooms that you wish to extract

2) Powder 'cracker' dry mushrooms (that means no moisture whatsoever), I use a coffee grinder but have used blenders in the past.

3) Add powdered mushrooms to your jar

4) For every gram of mushrooms, add 3-5ml of ethanol (or methanol), screw on lid and shake vigorously.

5) Let the mixture sit for a few hours and then shake again (I commonly leave mine over night but I can't really see the point as psilocybin is so soluble)

6) Filtering. I first filter the sludge through a shirt (first soak shirt in ethanol so as not to soak up the psilocybin/ethanol you wish to enjoy).

7) I then soak a coffee filter in ethanol and repeat the filtering process with this filter to remove all particulates.

8 ) Once filtering is complete, you simply pour the filtrate into a shallow tray for evaporating with the fan blowing over it to speed up the process (this must be done in a well ventilated area away from ignition sources!!! I CAN'T STRESS THIS ENOUGH!)

9) It will usually take 12+ hours to evaporate off the ethanol and you will then be left with a layer of blue/black sludge which I scrape up with a razor blade.

This sludge varies in potency. Most reports state about 40% psilocybin as a maximum. It is also very unstable and will quickly degrade unless stored in alcohol that is above 50% or 100 proof in the old scale.

I will not state what doses of this that I usually take. Psilocybin is best dosed around the 20mg mark so start low and work your way up (remember your extract is max 40% pure)

I am yet to hear a complaint about the extract. It is a much cleaner and clearer trip than dosing mushrooms. This has to be experienced to be believed

I have dosed psilocybin extract 50% alcohol vodka and also 70% alcohol absynth that is over 3 years old, with no noticeable drop in potency. I quite enjoy having a shot of my favorite strong spirit to dose mushrooms =D
