Seems unlikely to me that plugging dried mushroom caps would be effective, I don't see how you would break it down. If it was psilocybin extract caps your chances are probably better. I can't speak to either from experience though personally.

Yeah your right D_M, more likely they were subs lol. I just know which ones to pick but had my names mixed up =(

It went fine for me when I've done it which is only a few times, but as I said I didn't smoke as much as I'd normally eat so it's hard to compare. Also I did find the taste stayed a little bit later, but it wasn't all that noticable. I don't normally like the taste of shrooms but smoking it I didn't mind. As I said I think I'll have a night in a couple of weeks time once I'm on uni holidays and try smoking a much larger amount of shrooms and see how it goes.

Whats the best way of drying out shrooms?

Recently I tried to dry them by firstly placing them on top of ducted heating for a while (~1 hour) then placed them in an air-tight container with a 'damp-rid' contraption. The shrooms turned to mush and little maggots were in there tripping balls. :(

Any ideas why they went to mush? Before putting them in the container is it best to fully dry them out on top of the ducted heating? Would it be that the container is not fully air-tight?

Thanks for any help :)

Temperatures above 40 degrees destroys psilocybin and psilocin.
So if the heater was too hot you're killing your active ingredient and possibly causing them to go mushie (don't mind the pun).

The drawer. Put the mushrooms into a drawer on few sheets of paper. Wait 24 hours. Works well on smaller mushrooms such as Ps. semilanceata. If you have silica gel or something similar (captures humidity) I'd recommend using it.

What types of mushrooms can be found in melbourne? I need to know so I can research them before I go out for pickings :). I know of Psilocybe subaeruginosa and Psilocybe semilanceata, however theres not much woodland is in my area, but a fair amount of fields, so im probably gonna have to go for the semilanceata. Can subaeruginosa be found in fields with minimal wood? They seem alot easier to identify, and don't worry ill be 110% sure they're psilocybe before ingesting :)

Shibada: You need to make sure that you have taken all the moisture out of them before chucking the subs in with the dessicant.
A way of determining this is to bend the stem, if the stem snaps like a twig then little to no moisture is in the mushroom.
Once they've all gone like that they should stay nice and dry in the air tight container.

Macee I think if you are lucky to see Psilocybe Semilanceata in Australia you would be in Tassie, I could be wrong though. You are bang on in regards to Psilocybe Subaeruginosa though, even if liberty caps are possible to find in Melbourne I guarantee a much easier time finding subs.

Hello,
I really adore the shrooms ... such special creatures.

On the smoking shrooms subject ... all I can say is eww!!!
I asked an old wize mate about this when I was young ... "can ya smoke shrooms?" (after having already done it , I just wanted to hear the honest answer ;)) ... he replied "Well , I guess you could ... but you'd have to be a mad bastard to try it!" ... "lol, yeh" I retorted :D SO I guess that is when I first discovered I was "mad" heheh , best to find out early I 'spose.

For one ... It tastes like absolute shit and goes all "gummy" in the cone ... and as was asked above ... this stunk out my bong so much I could taste the aftertaste for weeks afterward. Not very pleasant to me.
I found a slight weird buzz that was a bit decent , and a bit fucked up at the same time (maybe from the psylocibin or maybe just from the asphyxiating smoke , but ofc there's no way you could smoke even a small dose of say ... 3 medium shrooms. I felt there was no need to ever do this again , I concluded the experiment and have never considered it since. :)

On the fact that the psylocibe degrades with excess heat (like most drugs) ... There is still some getting thru ofc ... just like putting a flame to Cannabis destroys the actives aswell , doesn't mean much after a pipe or few. %)

All in all ... I don't think smoking shrooms is at all worth even trying.
As for the taste of shrooms and the teas ... again , I don't get this issue ... sure they aren't the most pleasant taste , but just gobble them down and chase , dip in honey if you must ... and the tea can be condensed so as to be a small amount of liquid containing major kick. ;) So for me at least , the slight "yucky" taste for a few seconds is well worth the next 6-20hrs of Bliss. =D
(rough guesstimates)

Anyhoo , I'm enjoying this thread and the discussions herein.
Cheers.

Whats the best way of drying out shrooms?

You should do all your research on shroomery.org.

I personally lay them out on some newspaper, and use a small fan heater on cold for the next 24 hours. I also have ducted heating on in our house... but i think drying shrooms is best done with no direct heat. You need to get them to cracker dry.

You will also need to finish them off in a desiccant chamber - go on shroomery for details on that. They explain how to make one very well - with pics and all.

The idea of drying shrooms is to get them cracker dry as fast as possibly to capture as much potency as possible. I have been getting mine dry just over 24hrs which is good - i personally don't recommend drying them for any longer than 48 hours. You need to get them cracker dry at least within 48 hours.

Anyone please feel free to correct me if i am wrong with any of that, as i am always up for learning!

When I used to dry out a lot of shrooms I used to go picking every day and would always be adding and removing shrooms from my dry chamber with many mushrooms of varying dryness in there. Definately think that adding wet bulk in there every day or two made the process take longer but I never noticed any reduction in potency from previous years and sure as hell had no complaints!

If you aren't using heat I don't really see why time would be a factor, so long as the mushrooms weren't actually rotting or whatever. I am far from an expert, just a shroomery taught picker who happened upon gold when I first started and got shitty that out of the thousands I picked in '07 (my first season) probably less than 20% got consumed before they rotted. I know, I know! Wasteful as shit and hardly spreading the wealth, it was my first season though and we all start somewhere, atleast I always used scissors hehe.

The quicker you dry them, the better the end product

Make sure you use dry desiccant every time you put a batch of mushrooms through the chamber.

I highly recommend color changing silica gel desiccant's which change color (eg. blue to pink) when they absorb moisture. It can be microwaved to remove the moisture and reused. Remember that it gets less effective every time and should occasionally be replaced with new desiccant.

Food dehydrators are also great for quick drying. Dry mushrooms on lower settings to preserve psilocybin content.

Store dry mushrooms in a dark, cool and dry place. If placed in plastic zip lock bags, inside sealed jars with a 5mm desiccant layer, they will hold potency for an eternity.

I notice no potency drop in mushrooms 'fossilized' 2 years ago and ones that were dried this season.

Hey, those desiccant things ... are they what you find in new clothes sometimes? Because when I am at work and I'm unpacking new clothes, I find those packet things with those tiny balls in them.

Could you use them (if they are what I am talking about) ?

i can't recommend a food dehydrator strongly enough for drying, it will have your mushies cracker dry within 4-6 hours max. also temperature doesnt rise abouve around 60-65 degrees even on the highest setting, which means potency loss should be minimal.

Yep.Perfect for the job.

can also find them in vitamin bottles etc. but you'd probably be best off buying some new ones like Psilo said. Never heard of those colour changing ones before. Nifty :)

Be sure to keep your silica gel from coming into contact with the mushrooms and your skin. It's not overly harmful but it is an irritant.

I use several layers of fly screen mesh between the silica gel layer and the mushrooms in my chamber. As stated above, I store them inside plastic zip lock bags, placed inside sealed jars with a silica gel layer.

It's not toxic, but it's good to keep them separated to avoid any contamination issues.

Please take a minute to read through the material safety data sheet aka MSDS

Also I was thinking if heat in excess of 40 degrees kills the active ingredient in mushies how come Tea works so well?

The heat has to be sustained and I'd say this figure is closer to 60deg C for rapid breaking down of psilocybin. A flame will destroy almost all of the available psilocybin which renders smoking almost useless.

Never boil mushrooms when making a tea or you will notice a large decrease in potency.

I lightly simmer or even just steep chopped mushrooms in warm water. I work out how many mugs of tea I have to make, add half a cup of water for each mug and then top up mugs with hot water from a kettle just before drinking.

Psilocybin is so water soluble that placing wet or dry mushrooms into cold water will extract a large amount of the active alkaloids. A warm mushroom tea made with honey and tea is nicer on the palate than cold mushroom water

I have even emptied tea bags and filled them back up with powdered, dry mushrooms for easy tea making. Good for camping
