Mushroom season 2010

Did you read the whole thread? There was a case of mistaken identity near the beginning.

cl_sullivan, our new forum rules ban the posting of dried mushrooms (see earlier in this thread). Your post, and replies have been unapproved.

I did mention "blue staining boletes" in my post, which is what that mushroom was. It looks NOTHING like a psilocybe. I suppose i should have said "chances are that if you find a blue staining mushroom that resembles a psilocybe, it is a sub" or something.

Cool Thread =D
I'm further north and sometimes forget that our "off season" is the Southerners "On Season" ... no wonder I often get the urge to travel south for Winter even tho it's bloody cold lol

I'm not very familiar with the Subs at all but I know the Cubes pretty well ... the Subs are said to be more potent ... this seems undisputed so I'll take that as fact for now ... from my limited experience I'd say they were different , possibly more potent but hard to tell as it was ... well , so different a trip to what I have been used to. I honestly don't think it was potency issue , but then I'm one to prefer to consume the shrooms as close to where they and I were found , to the extent of camping overnight in the same paddock) ... but that's just me , "imported" shrooms always act differently on me just as I'm sure I would impact on the shooms importing myself to them. 8o
It's like a dual Life-Support system of sorts ... haha but there were some nice musings on that type of theory earlier in the thread so I'll leave it at that. (McKenna=Legend) :)

So given there are no subs up here (maybe) ... all I can do is 'perv' here for the mean time (Plz not so big pics on the page , owch!) ... I'm yet to read previous years threads but I suppose this one will continue on until the eventuation of the warm season shrooms up here , awesome.

About the Q&A above on the Blueing ... from my studies a while back I found that there was indeed one other poisonous shroom that when picked stained blue and could be possibly be mistaken for the psychoactive type ... I was pretty sure they weren't even an inhabitant of this country so I pretty much used the staining blue identification for one of the top 3 things to look for (besides knowing what they look like) if not the top thing , not everyones got a microscope handy afterall.
If someone could correct me on this or even better point me in the way of a prominent citation I would be eternally grateful ofc. %)

And I have a question someone here may be able to answer ...
How far north can Subs exist? ... Actually or theoretically are both good.

I'm starting to think that many of the ones I've passed up in the past could possibly have been subs ... they stained but because of the colour of the stem the stain was more inky black (like blue bic biro spill) ... so I never trusted them and could never identify 100% with all the Books and Erowid in the world ;) ... I have taken younger fatter ones from up here tho that look like the classic Sub youngin , very bronzed brown cap , near white stem , In woodier mulch than usual , still cow poo tho I reckon.
But anyway , I think there are many many sub-species and always have thought so ... There are different types of Cubensis , of this I'm certain , all pretty much the same effects but differing greatly in size , stature and shape (and potency) ... even in the same paddocks.

Just to clarify , what I refer to above was in the cooler months , Nth NSW ... Cyans seemed to last into the cold alot longer than the Cubes although I saw a few cubes pop up just down the hill the other day , I left them , they were strong ones :D The Season Is well and truly over here and has been for the best part of a month I'd say ... winter will pass fairly quickly tho and by mid-spring they should be charging yet again. Hoorah.

LOL ... new south park ... anyhoo , better finish up. Great thread guyz , happy hunting =D

Cheers.

Hey me and a friend been researching up a lot lately! Went out hunting a few times to the local parks, but with no luck.. found plenty of different shrooms though... none of the kind we were after though :p

I was just wondering.. how important is it that you go hunting in the morning? We have been going in the afternoon.. how does this affect our chances?

Also, we are going to make a day of it.. drive up into the bush on the weekend and go camping :) Are there any good places just outside of melbourne to start looking?

Thanks guys love the thread :D

No sourcing is allowed. As to whens the best time it really doesnt matter what time of the day it is. The mushrooms wont just disappear unless someone has taken them or something ate it or etc etc, u get the picture LOL

Ideally morning would be the best time to ensure u have a good view for them but it wont make much of a difference. Usually takes about 3 days for it to rot after the cap has opened so got to be at the right place at the right time.

Man I used to go on a picking mission after school nearly every afternoon in season of '07, and let me tell you I did none to shabby. Doubt I have ever dragged myself out of bed to go shroom hunting in the morning ever, fuck that, they don't disappear as the day goes on. Well sometimes they do, but not by magic! :p

The S.A season is nicely under way. Mountainous area's are producing decent amounts. I recommend eucalypt forests with nice mulch layers to support mycelium. I tend to find them hiding under bracken ferns along the sides of walking tracks in this environment. I am yet to hear of any decent finds from wood chipped garden beds but they are always worth a look if you are in the city and can't easily get into the bush for a hunt.

Pine forests are hit and miss. They also produce fairly sub (pun intended) standard and weak mushrooms due to pine needle mulch being highly acidic.

Hunting in forests that have been burnt out in the past few years is a waste of time. I rarely find subs within 3 years of a forest fire. They are one fungal species that doesn't seem to bounce back after fires.

I'm yet to hear of any finds in W.A but they can't be too far off.

It certainly has been a bumper season in Victoria. I haven't seen it this good in many years :)

Getting up early might just beat all the other bastards trying to steal your shrooms though :X

Has anyone had any luck in the south west of W.A thinking of going for a hunt soon

^^^ As stated by me 2 posts up, I am yet to hear of any finds in W.A. They commonly come up around this time but some years it's mid June before they get cranking.

If I had enough time I would check the local temps and rain fall to give you a good indication of whether you should go looking but today I am a busy man.

If I have time later I will look into it and report back.

As I said I haven't heard of any finds from the hunters that I chat to in the region but this isn't to say they aren't already up.

hey all,

These things do really grow everywhere in melbourne in good amounts, do not be mistaken.

^ I don't think anybody believes the extent to which that is true before they go out and see it for themselves. It would not be overly difficult to pick all the shrooms one would ever need for a lifetime in one season, but is pointless seeing as how they ain't going anywhere. It can be tempting to be greedy but leave some wealth for other hunters. ;)

Keep it up Boris, I swear you can't be far off. If you keep finding look alikes then you are in the right places. Be persistent and you will be rewarded. It is funny, the hardest sub anyone finds in their life is the first one. Comes a lot easier after that.

Thanks man I've heard before the first is always the hardest, I'm just waiting to come along it. I've got the habitat down pat and I know exactly what I'm looking for. I just need to stumble upon that patch that's out there with my name on it. :-)

You guys will get there, it is much more rewarding when you have spent so much time and effort finding them too! I am actually kind of tempted to go get some and have an introspective trip alone tonight, but it probably is not wise as I really ought to be working.
