Mushroom season 2010

Yeah it definitely seemed a bit to chilly for the fungi (-1/-2 at night).
Thought i'd give it a go at least. Having a nice ol' mushy trip with that sort of scenery around you would of been pretty amazing though.

hey guys,
Im in A.C.T. and im happy to report there is a healthy batch near the brindies. When I say healthy I mean stupidly massive.
Whoo Wee.
Lock your brains up coz I just tripped on mine:!

Shrooms I found in the weekend - Lower Hutt, NZ

*theyre everywhere here atm, the last 3 weeks being excellent, have been going to same patch every 2 - 3 days LMAO where the patches are, in full view of the public, imagine dodgy guy with a maccas paperbag walking around a traffic island bark garden!
LOL there were spore prints all over the newspaper, save them bits!!

edit: actually this year has been the best for nz shrooms ever!! I think its the weather - wellington/hutt valley has similar weather to melbourne (im originally from melb so kinda know what im talking about). Also I just leave on paper to dry or clean then add warmed honey to a jar of them, within 2 days the jar is blackish blue/spread that stuff on toast my friend or just take a tablespoon full lol just tastes like honey then ;)

haha i lived in Lower Hutt, Wainuiomata, Petone and Porirua area for many years :) Also spent some time up in Rotorua on my last spell over in NZ a decade back.

Hey quick question

Haven't been able to find much good info on this and did some searching but wasn't really sure how to phrase it.

I know there are many other types of mushroom whos stems can bruise blue but specifically in victoria are there many known ones of these that look at all similar to subs? and are there any poisonous species in victoria that will bruise blue?

No. Generally, a good rule of thumb, is a blue bruising and a purple to black spore print. AFAIK there are no known exceptions to this rule but new species of mushroom are being found all the time, so that doesn't rule out there being an exception out there somewhere. In Victoria you will only find subs anyway, but from memory I have seen big blue mushrooms, not blue bruising, just blue. But they are several times larger than any sub. If you stick to little brown mushrooms that bruise blue and have the right colour spore print you should be right. That being said, if you aren't familiar with subs then get any samples ID'd anyway just to be on the safe side

I found my first mushrooms of the season yesterday. Wasn't actually looking just crossing the road from a big shopping centre to hit the pharmacy and there were shrooms on the traffic island and next to one of the stores on the way to the pharmacy. I didn't pick any because I don't have my dry chamber set up. The patch next to the store had a lot of reasonable size subs that had been cut but left on the ground, they were hell blue by the time they got there so obviously whoever cut them doesn't know what they are doing. Its a shame I don't really trip on them anymoreo r last night could of been interesting...

I've had a lot of love from a particular chain of malls throughout the years, would love to know where they source their mulch from =D

New Comer

Hello everyone, :)

What a fantastic thread. I really appreciate the info and insights that you guys have provided.

So, I live in Adelaide. I have never Shroom hunted before but am trying this year. I recently experimented in Amsterdam and would enjoyed the experience immensely.

I have researched the topic quite a bit but am not sure how good my infromation is. Can any affirm that I have the facts right?

What Mushrooms to look for

In Adelaide the best bets are "subs"Psilocybe subaeruginosa Cleland

Time to Go

The best time to search is between the months of May and July. After it has been raining for a few days and also been quite cold. The ground needs to be quite wet and remain saturated. Also, the temperature has to have been down to at least 10 C and/or there needs to have been a frost.

Where to look

Subs are wood loving, so the best bet is in pine forests, wood chips and in areas where there is a lot of bark, leaf litter from Eucalyptus. "Psilocybe subaeruginosa grows in clusters in wood chips, piles of leaves and woody debris in urban areas, and along trails and roads in deciduous forests and gardens."
In my case the , Kaipo Forrest, Adelaide, Adelaide Hills, Mt. Lofty, etc

Identification

A complete description can be found a shroomery.com as well as some photos and procedure for identification. Hunters should photograph and spore check before consumption.
But essentially, the mushroom is going to have a cap that is 1-6 cm in diameter and be tan brown. It bruises bluish where damaged. The gills are crowded, cream color when young, violet brown when it is older.

Are these things right?

So here are a few questions:

1) Is it really hard to find some? If I trot off with basket and clippers in hand and I wasting my time? Do you need to know special places or be really, really lucky?

2) Is there anything else that is important to know about finding them that I have not mentioned?

3) Hints?

Peace,

Jimi

^ Hey man the info you have posted up is correct. Let me be the first to say welcome to bluelight :D if you stick around I guarantee you will learn A LOT and be an asset to yourself and your drug using friends.

It is PISS EASY to find subs in Melbourne, I believe it is a little harder in Adelaide but if I am honest, if you put in hard work and actually get your ass in the field frequently you are guaranteed to find actives, no question.

I would say you want to consider areas that will retain moisture well and you are likely to hit the jackpot. Also I have always found my best spots to be next to reasonable sized bodies of fresh water, both natural and man made.

Galerina and stropharia aurantica are the main bad look alikes you want to watch out for, galerina will destroy your insides, strophs will just give you the runs. Learn to identify these as well as you can subs, that way you have extra protection against poisoning yourself and it is also useful because these species grow in pretty much identical conditions, if you keep finding them the subs aren't far off.

My biggest hint would be check all your local parks, school, universities, land scaped gardens etc. You can find ALOT of mulched gardens in suburbia and psilocybe subaeruginosa flourishes in such environments, I used to think it would take a big trek out bush to get a decent haul but I have hit pay dirt endless times within 10 minutes walking distance from my house, school, etc.

Be persistent and educated and you will find, rule of thumb is if in doubt throw it out and dose conservatively because I would bet a lot of money that the subs you find in Southern Australia will be more potent than whatever cubes they gave you over in the 'Dam.

2) Is there anything else that is important to know about finding them that I have not mentioned?

Spore prints, maybe? Purple to black. And, as d_m sys above about gallerina's etc, they give a rusty brown spore print, which is to be avoided at all cost.

^ LOL it is really embarrassing I actually left that out my initial post, as that is probably the single most important way for newbies to determine they have got the goods.

There aren't too many mushrooms out there that bruise blue in Australia. There is a species of galerina that bruises blue, but i don't think it exists in Australia.

There is a blue staining bolete. But bolete's are porous and do not resemble a psilocybe in any way what so ever.

I so often see the mushroom "cortinarius sp" to be thought to the unfamiliar hunter as active because it is bright purple. It's clearly purple and not blue.

Chances are that if you find a clearly blue staining mushroom, it is psilocybe subaureginosa. Nothing else around looks like it and once you newbies find your first sub, you'll never mistake another mushroom for one of these psilocybes.

Edit: Have seen blue herbicide being used on mushroom patches before. If it was sprayed on poisonous mushrooms, this could be a very dangerous combination so watch out for that!

Yeah, that sounds like the one I was talking about, big, bad looking mo'fo's. I was thinking blue but on reflection they were purple (many years back). And with the gallerina's, they'll have the brown/rusty spore print, so generally speaking a combination of spores and blue bruising is a pretty safe bet.

Wow! Thanks.

Thanks everyone for that fantastic information.
We have just had a few days of quite heavy rain here in Adelaide. So I might go for a walk or two. It hasn't been that cold yet though so maybe no luck?

Seems like pine forests next to lakes are a good bet. Will try there first, that way if I don't find anything at least I have gone for a walk someone beautiful.

Also here are a couple of things I havn't been able to find out:

1) how long after cutting will they bruise?

2) How long after cutting can I do a spore test? 3, 6, 12 hours?

3) Do old mushrooms still bruise?

Thanks once again!!!

Did you read the whole thread? There was a case of mistaken identity near the beginning.

cl_sullivan, our new forum rules ban the posting of dried mushrooms (see earlier in this thread). Your post, and replies have been unapproved.

1. U dont cut, u gently twist without hurting the mycelium network underneath the ground. They will bruise straight away if u touch them or apply a bit of pressure.

2. Best time to take prints is when the veil breaks from the stem and it opens up then wait a few hours. If ur too late it will automatically drop it.

3. They will bruise until they start to rot.

Hope that helped:)
