Mushroom season 2010

How important is the use of scissors/care when picking, I told some of my friends to use scissors so as not to pull up the roots/underground parts but they say the fungi is spread over the whole area underground anyway so it doesn't really matter.

some clarification?
 
Mushrooms grow from spores, not roots. Pulling the entire stem won't cause any dramas - future mushrooms will grow in this patch if the previous generation were able to drop their spores.

On a happy note, I stumlbed across (about an hour out from Newcastle) what may well be the last Cubies of the season last weekend.
 
^Am I correct in saying that if you pull them out, the mycelium (or "roots") which is attached to the stem comes out with it. If you cut them there's a high chance more will grow in the same place (that season).

ok sorry but if "the mycelium" spreads over many square meters underground which is what I was led to believe how does pulling up the underground part of the mushroom affect it anymore than taking a bit of stem when you pick a flower say.

Please correct me if I'm wrong I'm just asking..

Sorry Repress just reread.. ahh ok so it isn't really damaging anything when you pull them up it's just that they may come up again from the same stem that season which they obviously won't if you pull the stem up with the mushroom.
 
Hi all!

I am a complete noob when it comes to mushies. However, I am half way through reading Paul Stamets "Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World" and I suggest reading it and for the inexperienced (like myself) taking it on hunts with you to aid identification.

I have read in the book and also erowid that P. Semilanceata grows in Vic, but I haven't seen any other reports. Has anyone here seen/found any in Vic?

Also any tips for first time hunters and takers?? Also, I'm not sure if I should go solo on my first trip or invite some friends of mine, any thoughts?

also, your right about the spores. but a patch only lasts so long before it consumes all nutrients or is restricted by a more virulent fungus.

spores spread the fungi much further and ensure propagation of the species.

another practice of mine is when I find patches idiots have had a go at I take cakes of mycelium that are damaged or exposed and bury them in new mulch with little fungus activity. this way they have a chance of propagation. don't touch to much with hands and don't bury to deep.

drazzilB: the mycelium is not significantly damaged when you pull up one mushroom. You do however reduce the fruiting on the fungi and can expose and dry out area's of mycelium which will damage and slow down propagation. The picking a flower analogy is a nice one.... but consider this. What happens if some greedy f*&k picks every flower on the plant and it's one of those plants that have heaps of flowers? Not much left... particularly if you take some of the stems with you (mycelium in the analogy). Also subs are generally gregarious and pulling up a mushroom with mycelium generally removes the cluster of nutrients that were causing the fruiting and stops further pinning in the specific location it's plucked from.

hey all. in response to the wheres wally? i guessed the same as you guys at first.

untill i stared some more and it started to look like a rusty beer bottle top!!

so now, i dont know, or have no other guesses, so i would like it if the postre of the photos id'ed it for us. for h.r. and all. as it is important.
 
I have 2 main patches. 1 is SE and 1 NE and both are flushing mighty hard! The extra precipitation this week should be starting up most patches that haven't already.

Ahh it's nice to look forward to lousy weather! :)
 
psynapsurfa: bit pattern got it. it's not visible in the top photo. in the bottom photo it's in the bag at the bottom right corner next to the black base of the bag. it's colour gradient is different to a sub and you can see it has a rough surface (sort of like wrinkles in skin). I just shows how easy these things can be missed.
 
I just went for an early morning walk and found multiple thousands of subs. Eucalypt forest with good mulch layers along a fence line/walking track.

It's still raining so it will only get better as the week rolls on

I will pick out the nice ones when there is more light

Gotta love this crappy weather :)

In the 'burbs I assume? Maybe I should go out tomorrow, got the day off (though had plans to spend it sitting around in my tracksuit drinking wine and playing computer games all day, but what the hell! ;))

Excellent way to highlight the potential dangers, some of the deadliest fungi are 'little brown mushrooms' that can be easily mistaken for psilocybes by the untrained eye.

Volcanic region west of Melb actually, best finds were close to the summit of a volcano. On par with the best patches of Subs that I have ever come across. You could easily fill a ute tray (not that anyone needs that many) and barely put a dent in some of these patches. Just beautiful :)

They're up in dribs and drabs in Melb. Some patches are crankin' and 2 mins down the road it is bone dry throughout all the maulch layers. It's like sex, go for the wet patch ;)

I'm yet to hear of any from the NW of Melb but that area is like a desert!

Another Bler told me they've sprouted up in the blue mountain pine forests so it's good to hear that NSW has come online.

No subs in the 'green triangle' region in SW Vic as of yet. They usually don't fruit in the west of the state until mid May or later, shortly followed by S.A and lastly W.A in June (late May if conditions are right).

In other news, I found a piece of gold in a bit of quartz whilst hunting today. It was tiny but still a cool find. Now to find the big retirement nugget =D
 
YouTold me you could retire on the value of your Barbie collection alone. No need to get greedy! Se and e suburbs are fucking crankin'! Feel so bad at picking so many, but seriously you would have to be pretty unlucky to not find any
 
What can I say, barbie is so much tighter than my midget, even Jacko would be jealous!

My Amanita patch has had the shit kicked out of it. I'm guessing school kids...

Plenty of lookalikes in the sub patches so be sure to double or even triple ID all of your mushrooms.
 
Found gold? Thats awesome! lol.

Note to self: Go picking, and get rich. Thats gods way of rewarding you for all your good HR deeds =D
