Need to see that. In fact there's numerous Australian films from the last 40 years I mean to see....one day when fucking rapidshare becomes an available tool to me:|
Need to watch all of Mike Leighs films as well, since My answer is the same as Felix....but other films of his are supposed to be grim as well.
How many times has this been put forward for recognition here:

No one I have ever met likes it. For me its in my top ten. Watched it more times than Bad lieutenant, King of New York, The Funeral, Bodysnatchers, Ms45 and Driller Killer put together.
Shambles may I hope have good things to say, but don't know if anyone else can stand it. Think I need to watch it right now actually....but fuck knows where my copy is...and hahaha no rapidshare....ad nauseam:|

PS Shutter Island is somewhere between optimum beauty and a bag of wank. Its obvious within 20 seconds what at least part of the "secret" is.... wish Scorsese would do something good for once.....Goodfellas is the last one of note.....perhaps:\

PS this post is not aimed at thespade as he will never like anything Abel Ferrarra will ever do.

Shutter Island was pretty good, maybe a bit predictable like but it's still a good film. And I disagree that Goodfellas was his last film of note. What about Casino, Gangs of New York and The Departed?

Yes I knew I forgot one! I am the only person on the planet;) who thinks Casino is a more enjoyable film than Goodfellas....Got that in original book form, Wiseguy and there are 2 differences
1. A few bits are trimmed for length...but not that much.
2. The film is wall to wall music which changes scenes sometimes...oh wait wall to wall music in a M.S. film! Casino actually had me laughing as the first hour is either voice over or music and how many stones tracks?
So why when choosing stones music for Shine a Light did he pick a horrendous selection?
Taxi Driver for the ultimate win...or delivery of pain if any of it reminds you of anything in your life:|:D

The two differences are that the film is shorter & has music? So it's exactly the same as the book except it's a film? I'm not sure if that was your point there or not :\

You're right about Taxi Driver, ultimate win. Fucking great movie!

Scum was originally a TV film then made into a cinema version.

Argh, you just reminded me of another film I totally forgot about. :D

*goes and searches imdb for the title cuz brain is fuxored*

I haven't seen it in years, but I remember laughing at it, whilst simultaneously being a lil' perturbed. Good combo imo. :D

It's one of my favourite films as well. I think it has a bad rep because it kinda tries too hard to deliver a strong message, rather than just be a typical horror film. But that's partly why I like it. I think the comparison between vampirism and drug addiction make it seem very realistic and believable. And then of course it has some of my favourite actors in it. Lili Taylor is extremely underrated, and brilliant in this. Then there's Edie Falco, Annabella Sciorra (who is also highly underrated), Kathryn Erbe, and Christopher Walken's chilling, and excellent cameo. Gotta love that lush black and white with all the extreme and beautiful contrasts between light and dark. I guess it could be seen as a reference to Kathleen's struggle with her conscience throughout the film. In any case, it's good and I'll stop waffling. =D

I watched Casino for the first time in years the other night. Dunno why, but I just felt like putting it on. Somewhere in the back of my mind I thought Sharon Stone was gonna spoil the entire thing, but she was pretty good in it.

Goodfellas is a good film, and I appreciate many things about it, but it's not one I would site as a favourite. I would say Casino is more enjoyable. Better or worse doesn't come into it. I mean, I like some pretty shite films simply because I find them entertaining. And I know they're shite. But it doesn't stop me watching them over and over again.

Of all Martin Scorsese films though, I would say my favourites are Taxi Driver, After Hours, Cape Fear, The Departed (even though I've only seen the beginning and the end), and I liked The Aviator too.

After Hours is amazing. I watched that after you (I think) recommended it one of the earlier movie threads and I loved it. It has this eerie feeling throughout the whole film, I was on edge just waiting for something bad to happen at every turn. I need to rent it again!

Rebound: The Legend Of Earl'The Goat'Manigault i havnt watched it yet but ive been told its brilliant, so im borrowing it and watching it tonight. any one seen it befor

I've just watched True Romance for the first time. Have been at the edge of my seat, in trepidation n' fear for that last hour or so - totally blown away by it 8o Don't know why I've not seen this film before - I fail!

Cracking stuff - it's made my top 10 favourite list %)

Good film kate. *thumbs up*

I watched Boyz N The Hood, have wanted to see it for years and thought I would love it but I was massively dissapointed. Too much soppy storyline and not enough niggaz getting blasted. :(

Cool Hand Luke. Paul Newman is sent to prison in the US South, and refuses to conform. Events unfold. Beautifully filmed, Newman is great. Contains the best poker line ever...

Scum: You fellas seen both versions? I've got them both and know I've seen them both many times but I'm buggered if I can remember the differences. Good excuse to watch them both again :D

Didn't realise there were two. Think I've watched the cinematic one.

Talkin Newman are we?
The Hustler
Hud
Yes, Cool Hand Luke
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
The Sting
My personal favourite and also his : Slapshot :)
The Verdict
Road to Perdition

However there are a load I've not seen, such as Somebody up there likes me and Buffalo Bill and the Indians that are supposed to be good as well.

Everyone should watch Slapshot. I hate sports and that is an ice hockey film, but really its swearing and fucking about all the way through and possibly somewhere around the top ten comedy films ever:D
