Police said a 55-year-old man killed himself Tuesday after he and his wife were charged with child endangering in connection with growing marijuana.

Robert Batsch and his wife Pamela, 54, of Rootstown, Ohio, were arrested Monday on warrants of allowing a juvenile to live in their home where marijuana was being grown. Their son told school officials about the marijuana, which led to a police investigation, reports Michael Sangiacomo of Cleveland.com.

Pamela found Robert's body with a .22 rifle in the woods behind their home about noon on Tuesday, according to Portage County Sheriff David Doak.

A spokesman for the Portage County Coroner said Batsch's death would be declared a suicide.


​Batsch and his wife had been released on $5,000 bond on Monday, the same day they were arrested.

"The dad got rid of everything once he got wind of the fact that his son had told school officials about the grow operation," Doak said. "When we got there, there was no marijuana present."

Or maybe he just didn't want to worry about LE banging down his door at 4am each morning. Maybe he felt bothered by the fact his parents were blatantly involved in such an illegal operation--and in his own home no less. IDK how long they had been growing, but if my parents had been growing weed in the house while I was in middle school, I would not have been cool with that.
 
Wow, i love my dad, but i could love that guy too. Growing under his own roof, respect. His kid will definitely regret this when he grows up.

He is a child who hasn't yet awakened to the real world, imo. so he tattletaled

Discounting all other situations such as his father being abusive, school officials pressuring him after getting wind after he told his friends,etc.

The bigger question is WHY he felt he had to go to this extreme?
Shame?
Fear?
Perhaps this is a sign that our laws on MJ are too strict that people would rather kill themselves?
Who knows, we never will.
 
If I was about to get caught I probably would have done then the same. I will not live my life in cell like an abused animal. I will not subject myself to those who think they have any sort of higher authority over my life. Also I wouldn't want to live in a world where my own kin is blinded enough to throw their family members away with harmful ignorance. Death is the ultimate freedom. I enjoy life, but I don't enjoy having no freedom and if it comes to to it, I'll go all the way.

So instead of living in the fear that maybe LE will find out and bust your dad you go ahead and take steps that guarantee 100% that the thing you fear WILL happen? I don't think that makes much sense at all.
 
Reminds me of China in the 1960's. People were encouraged to spy on their neighbors, and to rat on them. They often made up shit just to get rewarded for telling the authorities about the "bad influences" in the country. The accused were then paraded through the streets and/or sent to do hard labor, shoveling shit in the countryside for years.
The US is in a similar situation. Tell on your own parents for GROWING A PLANT that makes people LAUGH and EAT lots of food, and the "dare" counselors will tell you that you have done a great thing. Then the cops will send your family to jail for many years.
Sick.
Disgusting.
This should be a science-fiction story, not reality.

CANNABIS IS A PLANT! Government has no legitimate authority to tell the people which plants they can consume. Is it just evil arrogant bastards that reach out for positions of power? Tyrants can go to hell.

The kid is young, probably doesn't know much about the law. But I'm sure he knows what his parents are doing is illegal.

Hmmmm, I can constantly live in fear of me going to prison for a long time for something I'm not doing, or I can obey the law/everything I've been taught and not get in trouble. Yeah it would suck to rat out your parents, but if you honestly believe you will go down with them, it makes sense to do so. And yes, I know I'm assuming things here (e.g. he may not have really talked to his parents about his feelings or known about the legal standing of himself in this matter).
