Rainbow Gathering-WORTH GOING TO?

were you able to trade the beer and ciggs for anything good? Is there live (organized) music at rainbow gatherings? or is it the typical drum circle where any instrument is cool?

i went to a gathering in british columbia. i did not like it. so many people were trying to one-up each other in their level of 'hippiness.' the idea is great but the crowd was pretty weird. but i think rainbows can be VERY different depending on the people that attend them, i probably just went to a shitty one or something. but it sure didnt make me want to try out another one to see if it was any better.

Never been to a gathering but anybody that followed it for a long time that Ive known are all gypsies and did not mind stealing your christmas presents.

but thats why we call them gypsies and not a true rainbow. I try not to put them as one because that is not what the rainbow was meant for i do not believe.

I plan on going to the gathering this year. I am a bit worried about it, because I am a very clean and proper individual who believes in etiquette, and I just know that I will stand out and therefore may not be accepted. This being said, I am a very peaceful person who loves being outdoors, sleeping by the fire, and dosing with good people, so I will try.

It always breaks my heart when I read about the counterculture of the 1960's. I always wanted to be there.

If some of you are worried about not being "hippie" enough for the gather. why not just go to some big 3 or 4 day music fest? They are filled with nice people who love music and enjoy good drugs. Many of the people who attended the bigger music fest aren't hippies, just really cool people.

has the site been announced for this year?

Rainbow has been targeted for extinction by the government by way of the U.S. Forest Service (the second most repugnant law-enforcement agency in the country, next to the border patrol). From what I hear, its basically a completely unsafe event now because of police harassment.

Its extremely fucked that people can't even be free of law-enforcement presence in the deep woods. :(

Sure, you should go to at least one event before it gets shut down. Of course, they will just start up again in a different place, but go now. Make sure you bring at least one friend...don't go alone the first time

yeah I sort of figured this... some of the people I know want to go to the gathering this summer, im sort of skeptical about it now that ive been reading this thread. I love the outdoors and groups of awesome people, but im quite socially awkward and the vibrations i get from humans in general are very strong, especially when psychoactives are involved. this event seems like something i would like but if it is monitored strongly by law enforcement it makes me even more skeptical. if any other bl people are going we should meet up maybe?

from what i've seen in my travels, there are many different flavors of the modern hippie. the rainbow gathering seems to attract the absolute dirtiest and sketchiest of the bunch. i can't think of anything offhand that would convince me to attend. certainly the general ethos is attractive, but it's executed far better elsewhere.

i went to gatherings from 1980-85 and again in '03, '04. the world is different and so are the gatherings.
in '03, '04 there were more than a few scary, sketchy folks, def not family regulars, but hangin around nonetheless. there was a really uncomfortable undercurrent, suspicious and kinda subdued at least compared to years before. granted, there was a lot of cop harassment when they were in the ocala forest.
the last time i went, i felt really sad when i left... like the positive vibes that were once so strong were barely there. idk, location prob had a lot to do w/ the negatives but mostly it just felt really over.

Elsewhere like where?

pretty much every other counterculture festival in america... burning man being at the top of the list. i don't have much respect for the "i need a miracle" brand of hippie that mooches everything and contributes nothing. you can only assemble so many shady vagrants before the community ideals are compromised by parasites. too many of the current flock need to manifest themselves a shower and lay off the hallucinogens for a while ;)

i also have my doubts about the scalability of some types of temporary autonomous zones. i just don't think lawlessness works in large groups - there's too much anonymity and opportunity to take advantage of the people who genuinely have their hearts in the right places.

i guess i'm too babylonian for the rainbow gathering. i've seen what no rules/no organization/no leadership looks like amongst people who aren't trustworthy and it's a fucking mess. i personally wouldn't feel comfortable there. i'm sure there are tons of awesome people who attend but in my opinion they are upstaged by the creepy nomad weirdos.

if you think you'd be satisfied with lip service to the earth and a head full of acid then by all means check it out, but personally that's not my idea of utopia.

^Haha the simple fact that it costs money to attend Burning Man weeds out most of the really dirty-ass people. Gatherings being completely free, and giving away free food to anyone, are bound to attract the type of people who need some free food. :D
