Rainbow Gathering-WORTH GOING TO?

Some hippies at the drum circle told me that it is going to be outside/near Mountain Home, AR.

I can't verify that though, but they were pretty much ready to head out towards the end of the month.

We would like to go but we are already planning on going to AUM...if only they were closer together...we could just stick around, but alas there is much time in between (and a wedding to attend in NC to boot!).

Call me close minded but the people at most rainbow gatherings are fucking scary.. its a disgusting group of people who use one another for sexual and drug consumption purposes...

I understand the draw and appeal. It was very fun for the first time I went. I was naive and didn't see what was really going on. Then the second time I went I wasn't high and I observed the whole thing from a sober non-participant view and it was amazing how radically different one was from the other. I cannot stress how much I am grossed out by the idea behind the "Rainbow Gathering" or "Rainbow Family Gathering"

You should be cautious with yourself and your body if you attend one of these events especially if you are a female who is easily influenced by others...

Of course whats one Mod crackpot to say you should go get fucked up on drugs and then participate in an orgy where nine guys butter your bread.

Ciao!!

euphoricnod, all you've done is cement my belief that I need to go to this year's Rainbow Gathering. Who can say no to getting fucked up on drugs and having group sex?

I stumbled on a Rainbow Gathering, once.

It was a minor one, I suppose. It was in some mountains south of Tucson, AZ.

I don't wish to be unkind, but these people were some of the most clueless losers I've ever seen. They had a guy along who was kind of their leader. They called him "Shepard." It's a good thing they had him along, because otherwise they might have starved to death.

C'mon, the whole "hippie" thing is yesterday's papers. There's got to be something new and better come down the pike, after all these years.

They did not seem to know how to take care of themselves. They were dirty. I don't mean "I've been out camping and haven't bathed for a few days' dirty, I mean really dirty. A lot of them looked like they were malnourished, seriously.

There were also a couple of them that looked kind of shady. Like, I better keep an eye on my shit, otherwise I might not own it anymore.

The problem arises when if, you're a guy, you wake up a few days later, try to take a whizz, and it burns like sulfuric acid.

Or, if you're a girl, you find your next period missing.

Hate to throw a wet blanket on the whole thing...but stuff like that can have consequences, serious ones. Some people I've known who called themselves hippies...they took care of people. Others...especially in recent years, don't seem to give a shit.

There was a short story about the gathering on the local news tonight. They picked out the skeeviest looking burnouts to show... though it might have been stock footage from another gathering, as I doubt that many people are out there right now aside from those setting up temporary infrastructure of some sort.

There is a big cop buildup though, and have already started arresting people. Of course, there are dumbasses wherever you go.

I'm not really interested in buying/selling/trading for drugs or weird sexual encounters. I just wanted to go and chill out and listen to people tell stories about how they came to be there, etc. There will be a representation from my area, so I can camp around people I know ... so I'm not too worried about that kind of thing.

Other things have come up though, and I doubt I'll make it out. I could go on the weekend, I guess, but doesn't really seem worth it.

it is a haven for the homeless so you will find a lot of "dirty hippies"

there was an event last year(?) where a known murderer on the run was found amongst them....but it was the other attendees who busted the guy and tied him up till the cops got there. neat little story, i will see if i can find the article.

very very odd.
drugs can be fun, but i'm not so sure about the group sex with homeless stranger hippies. I've always wanted to check one out just to see what it's like. But i think my assumption of what a rainbow gathering was, is quite a bit different than the real thing.
if it were closer i might check it out.....maybe someday

ok, don't be so prone to listen and believe one persons opinion....i know quite a few professional people, great people, not sex crazed homeless hippies..who love the family gatherings and go as often as they can.

man, this was only 5.5 hours away from me...i would have liked to go but i've had a lot of shit come up lately that would have made it a bit difficult for me to attend...

did anyone make it down there? and if so, how was your experience? :)

I used to always go to Rainbow gatherings, just park and get out of the parking lot that is just security, alcoholics and cops, hike in the mile or so away from the cars and police. Be care full who you take to your tent, you know if a girl can’t even brush her hair or wash her hands she sure as fuck isn’t keeping other parts of her body clean. Do all your drugs there and leave with nothing the LEOs do a lot of road block check points.

Agreed they're called drainbows for a reason and most people who go to the Drainbow gathering are just professional scam artists and panhandlers.

Well... hmm... I'm upset with myself for writing that.

I went to the national gathering this year in Wyoming and it was different from some of the regional meetings I have attended.

It was nothing short of amazing. I had a great time made some great friends and my impressions were (for the most) part totally fucked.

There were panhandlers. There were drainbows, but for the most part people contributed and had a good time. I shared a really great banana bread recipe with luvin ovens. I helped construct the ovens at the site and made a TON of bread.

I also spent my time hiking (about 15 miles a day or more) and swimming and taking great potent drugs.

sure you have shwag hippies some times, rainbow is what you bring to it. If you want something or to have there be something there that you want bring it in and give it. you can do that with concepts too, out there things thrive if you manifest it right. its what you make of it, who you chosse to asociate yourself with and the vibe of that perticular gathering... if it starts turning shwag bring some life into it and share your thoughts, you will be listened to.

I went to a Rainbow Gathering in Ocala Florida (Ocala Forest) probably around 2004. Me and 3 friends heard about it and decided to go check it out. We brought a lot of beer and cigarettes because we heard the people were into trade. We tried to buy a necklace from a guy, but he wouldn't take our money. Basically there were different little camp sites set up throughout the area. We met some interesting people that's for sure. They had a spot set up for trade, people had whatever they made or brought and would trade for other things they needed or wanted. There was a spot dedicated to cooking, people would just bring food and they would have a big dinner at night around a bonfire. There were all types of people out there; single people, families, children, people who took off from work for a week just to stay out there. I didn't see much drug use, though pot was all around. My friends and I were totally over dressed though. It did seem like everyone was very dirty, like they just chose not to shower or didn't have the means to. We took pictures standing in front of the home made signs for each little camp site. My favorite sign was for a site called "Shut up and Eat it." They people were all very friendly. As we walked down the path, everyone who passed us would say "Welcome Home." Talking with the people we met was pretty cool. They all have a different story to tell about where they came from and how they ended up with the Gathering. One girl I met just up and left college for a year to travel around with them.

The experience is definitely one I won't forget. I was very interesting and pretty fun. Although we decided if we ever go again, we will not over dress (probably roll around in the dirt to look the part) and bring items we can trade rather than money. If you have the opportunity to check it out, go for it. You may or may not like it, depends on how open minded you are. If you enjoy new experiences, this is something to add to your list. Have fun.
