Harm Reduction Injection Complications FAQ and Mega Thread

Yup. Think it's pretty standard - some veins are just livelier than others. Suspect it may have to do with hydration and blood pressure. Possibly. Also, if you shoot a lot of coke your blood gets really thick, dark and sluggish and it gets increasingly difficult to inject. But even without shooting coke some veins are tricklers and some are gushers and the colour and viscosity of blood can vary quite a bit. So long as you're definitely in a vein it's all good :)

Thanks for all the great info guys. Really does help me out, i have been pulling out and trying to hit a new vein to get that thick flow because i was worried i was gonna miss. So for the record, no blood at all will flow into the rig if i don't hit a vein? If i have blood coming in, no matter the thickness, color,or rate the blood flows, i'm good? Sorry for all the questions, but i have been curious about this for awhile. This will also make shooting up much quicker half the time now. Being as i would usually try for another vein when this occurs. Happy Holidays Blue-Lighters!!

yes (unless u hit an artery)

If i have blood coming in, no matter the thickness, color,or rate the blood flows, i'm good?

no, cuz u can hit an artery and there will still be blood coming in. The blood is lighter, flows much harder and u can tell arteries on ur body, they r pinkish, not blue like veins

Is it ok to IM using tap water? this would be a one time thing and everything else would be sterile the site swabbed with alcohol pre and post injection. I also have bottles I have take sips out of. Whats the safest thing i can do here?

The safest thing you could do is not do it, the second safest thing would be to pass all the liquid through a micron filter, the finest pored filter you can get.

If you cant get a micron filter then you simply cant do this.

yeah i was fiending so bad the other day, I shared a needle with my gay brother, im afraid i have a disease now

If you register blood and you push off without any pain or swelling then the chances are that your in the vein.
There are many things that can make the register seem like you have a problem, theys can include but arent limited to the contion of your vein and how good of a syringe you are using and also if your syring is acctuly fully in the vein or partialy in the vein.
I wouldnt worry to much unless your experiencing pain/swelling.

could be an artery but I highly doubt that. Most likely just depends on the tightness of your tourniquet. I have found that if I release the tourniquet before I register, it comes in a lot slower and more pronounced as opposed to if there is pressure on it it tends to squirt in and not as defined of a "mushroom cloud"

dirty shot or cotton fever, help me figure this out

Ok so I've been IV'ing oxy for the past couple of months. Once or twice before I've done a shot and then about 30 minutes later I started getting sick and very irritable and thrown up and the whole symptons of cotton fever or a dirty hit. I started shaking uncontrolably, clenching my jaw harder than I've ever clenched it before and I couldn't control any of this. But these symptons usually went away within it a couple of hours.

Yesterday something different happened. I don't know exactly what I did but I prep'd a shot and went ahead and did it. I was fine for a couple hours, laid down and went into a nod, and when I woke up about an hour later I was completely drenched in sweat. My entire bed was wet, and on top of that I had the worst fever and one of the worst headaches I've ever experienced. It was weird tho because I had a high fever but my body felt very cold, and I had the chills. I got really nautious and eventually threw up.

I'm home from college on winter break, and my mom had been sick with some kind of flu, so I thought she had just transferred her sickness to me or something like that. But I wake up this morning feeling a lot better, and basically I feel back to normal now. So my question is what exactly happened? I know there is no way of telling me an exact answer, but any input is greatly appreciated. This wasn't like the earlier incident where I started shaking uncontrollably, so I'm not sure what happened. I just want to be able to prevent this type of thing from happening in the future.

This is why you ALWAYS USE STERILE EQUIPMENT.

if you're worried about things like safety, go find a needle exchange in your area and they'll give you sterile supplies.

Yes sterile equipment is always for the best.
Though here in my city we don't have any needle exchange, don't know if Sweden has it at all.
So gotta either buy new new syringes n needles of the street or internet, so i reuse my pieces regurlarly.
The only time ive gotten cotton fever is when the cotton were dirty some how or maybe some tobacco flew into the solution prior to drawing it into the syringe. Never from dirty syringes or needles.

Though once i lost my voice when i borrowed a friends syringe, guess it contained some bacteria or something, very funny experience to loose your voice in like 5-10min.

Anyway, to the thread starter, you probably suffered some kind of delayed cotton fever or got some kind of bacteria into the solution.

there's no needle exchange in my area that I'm aware of (i live in south Florida). But you're right, in the future I will work more carefully on using sterile equipment.
