Not judging but....

A person tries drugs in most cases out of curiosity. Your whole life your told how bad it is, yet then again there are tens of millions of people who do it. Your favorite actors/musicians/artists all use drugs and you feel like maybe your missing out on something. You can't really comprehend how bad drugs really can fuck your shit up until they already have.

I am prob one in a few that uses smack for fun... I know how much i can do and for how long before i start to get "sick"...Taking breaks / Will power and knowing your bodies reaction to the drug is needed.....i only snort it , never shot and never will...

Why does one start using heroin or crack KNOWING what is coming for them down the pike?

because your hypothesis is wrong.
you can, in fact, shoot heroin or crack, or smoke crack, just a few times and not become addicted. moderation of use is indeed possible. also, even if you get addicted and hit rock bottom or even almost die, it doesnt have to be a bad thing, its whatever you make of it.
such experiences can indeed be turned into positive things, with the right mindset.

Why did Adam take a bite out of that apple? Why did Cain kill Abel? Why did Odysseus gloat after blinding the cyclops, as to piss of Poseidon? Why did Pandora open that fucking box after being explicitly told not too, that stupid bitch? Why does Gilgamesh spill the blood of his own people?

This is one of those Big Questions (TM). Ultimately it lies beyond the current reach of science (although with advances in genetics in may not be forever) much less the pseudoscientific mucky-muck of pop psychology and theories of addiction. Rather, your question, which touches upon ideas like nature vs nurture, original sin, free will and all that fun jazz; is one of philosophy and spirituality, which is to say there are a bunch of big, serious books and men in funny looking robes out there to provide you with any overly vague, sophistic answer you want. Thus, it is up to you my good friend to seek out these answers, to quest for knowledge that, while not satisfying your thirst, will at least quench it enough in the short term to continue on your life's journey. Go forth young grasshopper! Go!

... or it could just be because the shit feels good.

H and C is a specific drug. the user probably likes that category of drugs.. Opiate/Cocaine

Keep in mind that not everyone is a addict and still live a productive life.

the chance to stray of course is alot higher with harder drugs, but than again this can happen with anything. Masterbating addict, fod addicts, stealing addicts (saw it on dr phil) anything that gives you pleasure can be addictive..its how you handle that situation, if you decide to do what gives you pleasure more than what you need to do to live productively youll end up where junkies/crackheads Are headed too. its not the drugs (there inanimate objects) its the people who use the drugs

+10000000 billion and zillion. (though, I'm not ignoring or denying the fact, that it certainly is sad that they feel so much like God caressing your brain and soul when high)

You know, I've always had the feeling that drug education campaigns and parent-children talks would be more effective if they actually acknowledged the fact that the reason why people like drugs is that they do, in fact, feel very nice :\

no one goes into drugs wanting to become an addict, most think it's something that happens to everyone else, but they have enough willpower to avoid it.

And there's no nice clear line between addicted and not addicted. It's a gradual process, and there's usually not a crystal clear moment when someone goes from just using/abusing to addicted, it's a gradual process. Like i said, it's a very complicated thing

Trying an addicting drug, getting addicted and then being able to stop is a sign of strength, not weakness IMO. It's like having the thing u want the most dangled in ur face all the time and being able to say no. It takes tons of self control. Getting addicted really teaches u about urself and gives u more self control than anything else. Getting clean is like mental training. All ur problems come forward and so do all ur weaknesses. U have to work through them to get through the addiction. I can't say that I regret the fact that I was addicted. I am mentally at a much better place than I was before my addiction. I am not saying that getting addicted is a good thing and people should do it, but once u r there the best way to deal is learning the most about yourself from it. It really is like nothing else at testing ur strength and perseverance.

We all make mistakes and do stupid shit. For some it is trying an addictive drug. What bothers me the most is that out society treats it like a criminal offense. Some people are able to get past their addictions, only to have their lives ruined by a felony on their records from simple possession. They fought a war with themselves only to fight another one with the stigma of a criminal record. Makes me sick that our prisons are filled non violent criminals, many of whom simply got addicted and will be paying for their addictions for the rest of their lives instead of getting their lives together and becoming better people. Makes me want to vomit that drug addiction is treated more negatively than sexual violence or sometimes murder.

I have loads of respect for those who fight their addiction and come out of the other side wiser and stronger and they are inspirational to those still trying.
Those who are in custody for drug related offences in the UK their biggest hurdle is, in most cases, is integrating and being accepted back into society so they are not only now managing their recovery but also the stigma attached to coming out of prison. As for comparing the treatment of different offences i.e. drug addiction Verses sexual offences I can't work it out either a frustrating topic of which I’m not in the right frame of mind to discuss right now.
IMO a lot of those I see their addiction is related to some form of abusive trauma and there’s not enough funding to address these issues and until they are how is someone expected to move on….grrrrrrrr, always down to money, I find this subject very frustrating :X
