cannabis and bipolar?

Right, well I have heard many stories of cannabis exacerbating schizophrenia, bipolar, depression, and panic/anxiety disorders and few stories of them helping.

I am not denying that it may reduce symptoms and stress without too many negatives for some people. Marijuana certainly has a pretty variable effect. I know IME cannabis has made my depression and anxiety much worse with heavy use.

im not saying it works for everyone, but to say it works for none or very few is disingenuous as there is plenty of anecdotal evidence in support of marijuana as well as against it for bipolar.

dude, who diagnosed you as bipolar? you need to ask that medical professional if you should smoke weed, not us. sounds to me like you're just trying to find enough people to agree with you so you can justify continuing to smoke. i know most doctors will tell you not to and that's a bummer. but, oh well, don't be irresponsible about an illness that can hurt a lot of those who care about you.

this is just common sense.

im not asking people if i should smoke, it works for me. plus it helps with post heroin boredom.

i guess your right chair, i just want to smoke weed lol i guess ill stop and start slitting my wrists...lol jk

im hoping to try a few things to calm down the symptoms of it. salvia seems to work great mixed with a cigarette but im changing my diet and getting therapy so i can calm down on the weed and try to work on my life more. thanks for the advice.

don´t smoke with bipolar disorder, cannabis can trigger preexistent mental disorders

dogfood, sorry bout that. didn't mean to quote you. i meant to direct all that criticism at elf teacher. he should go ask the person who diagnosed him what they think about weed, not us. i still think that's pretty pertinent

good point. taking medical advice over the internet probably isnt the best idea

I was recently diagnosed as bipolar, and am a long-time toker. Someone I really trust (in the medical field) who knows this about me cautioned me about smoking herb, and I am taking his advice. I smoke very infrequently now. With everything he told me, I would highly suggest against regular usage. If you are on an anti-psychotic especially - it can interfere with how your meds work. It was tough for me to take this news, since herb helps me with other ailments I have. You just have to do what you have to do to make yourself healthy.

thanks for the advice nukesandchems you seem to know what you are talking about and i will take it easy on the weed.

You should not smoke it at all. You are bipolar. So am I. I have gone psychotic/manic after using only marijuana in the past. I have seen many others with bipolar disorder suffer similar problems because they insisted on smoking marijuana, even if it was just "once in a while".

You need to realize that you are living with a very serious mental illness that you will have for the rest of your life. You are going to have to stay medication compliant and drug free for the rest of your life if you intend to stay healthy, want to live a productive life, and stay out of trouble (legal and stay out of mental hospitals).

You probably don't like hearing this but this is the truth. Turn a new page and close the book on your drug use. Stopping everything was the only way my life improved. I've seen too many people with bipolar disorder fuck their chances up of living a good life because they just wouldn't quit what they thought was the least worrisome of drugs: Pot.

hey guys,

I have Bipolar 2 and its pretty severe with delusions. I am searching for something to heal me and i have smoked a lot of green in my life but i have never done it in a way that could heal me. do you think if i smoke a joint that is made of tobacco/salvia/herb 1/3 (1g) of each it will help me with my symptoms? because the tobacco will relax me with the the salvia will show me my symptoms and the herb will help me think it through after the trip is over with. does this make sence? what do you think?

thank you,
ELF

PS. Cabbage night= 2 stolen chickens, one thrown into a bar the other in a friends truck, smashed mailboxes about 12, pissed off drivers (driving 5 mph, flashing highbeams) + herb = Alot of fun!!....lol

You want to find what's stopping you from feeling well and happy. I don't believe bipolar people can spot out a way to unleash their endogenous mania. Tripping will let you learn about your psyche and let you think a lot, but it's not like you're going to crack the code to finding a way to endogenous mania. Mania develops secondary to the things you do in life on a daily and monthly basis.

SWIM with bipolar would like to say that drug-induced mania with psychosis gives way to increasing susceptibility to psychotic depression. I mean there are ways of living with it, but its not going to help the bipolar go from a negative to a positive.

Weed should be psychedelic enough without the Salvia. Since joints burn at what 1000 deg. c., it should smoke well, the Salvia included.

alright...here we go:

We've got to remember that each of our bodies are unique in how they react to any substance, first of all. Second, how will the herb react with the medications you are taking? Have you consulted a doctor about this or done any research whatsoever of what side effects may occur from combing your medication(s) with ganja?

You'll want to be sure to monitor how it affects you and if there is any negative reaction at all, I'd say leave it alone.

And I really don't see where Salvia is going to fit in with Bipolar 2. That could turn out horrible, so at least be careful with that shit.

episodes can be caused by almost anything pshycoactive.
Im manic, ocd, autistic and have chronic pain. I have tried a plethora of different medications since i was 8 or so. The issues we face with treatment is the fact that the symptoms are too broad and the variations in individual nurological function and chemical balance. few comments in this thread express that. You cant throw around you can or you cant's . pshycology is a psudeo-science so take things seriously, skeptically and with a grain of salt. I have been smoking cannabis since i was a teen. I have found cannabis to help me to do the day to day stuff, function in social situations, eat, sleep, mood balance etc. Its important for people to understand that cannabis is an effective treatment, but its not a one fits all.
I will continue smoking cannabis as for me it provides stable and effective relief that surpasses perscribed pharms.
Different treatments co-operate with different people its all to commonly overlooked in modern medical practice.

I'm bipolar 1. I wouldn't try that combo. I have a feeling it would make me freak the fuck out. I've heard some ok and some kinda crazy things about salvia trips. And if I'm in the wrong mood, weed will make my anxiety worse (especially when I start thinking about all sorts of dumb shit that doesn't need to be thought about b/c it's not even real 8)).

I have a feeling that if I freaked out on salvia the pot would make me feel worse. Because I'm officially freaking out already so pot amplifies it. Does that make sense? err...

be safe man.

I have bi polar disorder and smoke cannabis daily. I am also on klonopin though, but I find the pot amazing for my bi polar and anxiety disorders.

good to see someone else with a similar exp. I cut the benzo's out as in my case they provided little relief. Good indica before an outing is the proverbial "cats ass" for anxiety and social comfort
