Top 5 electronic producers

should definetely add DJ Stingray aka Sherard Ingram aka Urban Tribe (in collaboration with C. Craig, Shakir and Moodymann)
and offcourse Gerald Donald (half of Drexciya) know from projects like Arplanet, Dopplereffekt, Japanese telecom,...

I'm shocked nobody (apart from me) has said New Order or Alex Smoke yet. Especially New Order. If you asked Underworld, the Chemical Brothers, or 808 State who their top 5 is, I guarentee they'd all include New Order. They're one of the most influential bands in history.

Where do you draw the line between new wave bands and electronic producers? New Order have made house, techno, electro, as well as a lot of stuff I would describe as 'synthpop'. But almost all of their work features synths, and that, for me, allows them to fall under the umbrella of 'electronic producers'.

Yeah, they were definitely fundamental to the development of modern electronic music. I still don't know if would count them as electronic music. I guess we are just arguing about semantics. But for some reason, when I am up for listening to some New Order, it's not the same feeling that I get when I want to listen to 'my' particular broad definition of electronic music. And that definition includes a lot, from 808 State and early goa to Logistics and Brookes Brothers.

IMO, his production work isn't too good. But you can't deny that he is a good DJ. It's not just PR, he truly has skills when it comes to mixing and setting up crazy shows. Yeah, he is commercial but I don't really get a "stuck up" vibe from him. He knows he is a big commercial DJ and he has good time and makes the crowd go mad.

I guess you can't discuss about taste, but I think the Drexciya sound is much deeper and profound than A. Rother. It will much easier stand the test of time. Rother's music is very appealing the first time you hear it, but from then on you'll start getting bored with it (at least I did). The Drexciya sound (this includes side projects like Life After Mutation, Translussion, Shifted Phases, Lab Rat Xl,...) may sound abit akward at first, but the more you listen to it, the more you'll appreciate.

im not a fan of tiesto, and i seriously don't understand why he still has such a following. Some people genuinely love his productions/shows/sets and are real fans (fair enough). but ALOT and i mean ALOT of people only really like him because he is a very big name in the trance scene. (even though he has mostly moved away from what real trance is).

anyway to answer your question. He was probably (don't quote me on this) the first dj to bring trance to the masses. This was years ago when trance was not a mainstream thing. He was the first DJ to sell out a more "concert" style event where he was the only DJ playing.

secondly: he was a pretty good DJ and produced some awesome trance back in the days.

3rd: he was the first and i think the only DJ that has been voted #1 DJ in DJMAGS top 100 for three consecutive years.

In this time he has obviously built up a HUGE fan-base.

His "elements of life" album was decent, i enjoyed a few tracks but most were probably not so trancy. I think this is when he started to slowly change his style.

His latest album (not sure if it has been released yet "Kaleidoscope" is more of a pop electro/pop trance with some indie influences. He's has said in alot of his interviews that this is what he is really liking atm and that he wants to move more towards that sort of sound. It's a really commercial sound which is terrible imo.

The real tiesto fans of his earlier work (from what i've read) are really pissed off about this, but because it's such a cheesy sound that pleases the masses.

This is the reason why he is so popular. alot of people are really annoyed that he is going down the path of the commercial stuff, but hey, he is making the money.

just for the record, im not a fan of tiesto. i use to like his in search of sunrise compilation/mix cds, but thats about it.

tiesto is HUGE in melbourne. earlier this year he sold out all of his shows and had to have a few more. hes coming down next year again and tickets sold out in a week or so.

majority of the crowd that go to his gigs are bandwagon jumpers, who really only know a few of his classics but still go just because he has the rep.

over the past couple of years all i seem to see in the press is 'tiesto, tiesto, tiesto' , and wondered how he got there. its good to understand the back story. i used to be into the trance sound along time ago, then moved onto other styles of house and stopped following the trance scene.

sounds like a combination of the money and the thousands/hundreds of thousands? of fans he has all over the world it what attracts him taking the commercial route.

my next question is then what happens next, what will be the wider impact. for example do people think more djs will go down his route, or perhaps will the scene polarise further - with more djs and events setting out specifically as non-commerical?

That's another very fine list indeed!!! I really am glad someone else mentioned Alex Smoke!!! I'm amazed no one has mentioned Burial before - he didn't quite make my top 5, but he'd definitely be in my top 10 :)

Does anyone know what style of music this is? Ive been spinning it for a year and still dont know what kind of techno it is. It sounds like a calmer version of schranz like Lars Klein. Then you got people like Marco Carola playing sets with Richie Hawtin and Luciano, its very confusing. I hear Derrick May play Bando and Mark Williams on youtube, is this just techno and not any sub genre?
