One of the most ridiculously evil things about the DEA is that it operates virtually outside of presidential, legislative or other authorities' domains (even other federal law enforcement agencies). As established by Nixon, it is essentially a para-military force given full rein to wage military action against citizens of US, with troops operating on US soil. The very existence of the DEA and its autonomy in executing domestic military strikes against US citizens is unconstitutional. Its not like the president knows about all DEA busts.
Oh, and, yes, while I had some hope for Obama (although, being a realist, not as much hope as others), the sad truth is that it doesn't particularly matter what he says, corporate interests, Congress, lobbyists, federal bureaucrats, et al. are absolutely fucking hell-bent in ensuring that nothing ever changes and nothing ever improves. For example:
(1) Obama immediately calls for the disbanding of Guantanamo and other illegal secret "MK Ultra"-style psychological warfare (i.e. interrogation) prisons. The reality: Congress shitcans the entire plan, burring every single possible step towards closing the facilities in mountains of red-tape, ensuring that the entire bit ends up as nothing but lip-service.
(2) Obama wants real health care reform, finally with a bit of logic and a public health option (like the rest of the developed world). The reality: corporate interests and their puppets in Congress block every single meaningful bit of forward progress and successfully wage a propaganda war ensuring that whatever bill emerges will be a castrated, watered-down pile of bullshit and corporate hand-outs.
And sadly, more will tally up. It seems to me that the possibility of real progress only begins to emerge after all of the current (Baby-Boomer and older) generation of federal officials are finally dead in the ground.
