I am getting a big tattoo done next weekend on my rib cages and know im not supposed to drink bc itll thin out my blood.. but will opiates have a reaction? This is my first tattoo and hear that the ribs are the most painfull spot

I think you're supposed to avoid NSAIDs, like ibuprofen, but I'm not positive. Someone who's had a tattoo will have to verify that

On a semi related note: I knew someone who got a tattoo done, and the adult that took them to get it tipped the tattoo artist in Vicodin

all my tattoo's were done off my face on something or another and all are fine.
not recommended though.
i think the worst possibility is more the fact that you'll make a decision to take the ink in a direction you don't like when youre sober!

got a buddy who is almost covered in tats (two full sleeves and a back collage) and he said he was on hydrocodone, or oxycodone for every single session

Tattoo artists aren't allowed here to ink people if that person is intoxicated. This mostly has to do with alcohol though, because it will cause a lot more bleeding, but many artists will still refuse to do something if you're messed up and might regret it the next day.

Both tattoo needles and opiates release histamine though, and you might be making the tattoo even itchier than it needs to be, which sucks because you CAN'T scratch a fresh tattoo.

Now this part I'm just hypothesizing. but I'm not sure oxy would be dulling that kind of pain that much anyways.

it prolly wont hurt (idunno do tats hurt? iv never had one), what are you getting a tattoo of?

Tattoos (in my opinion) hurt like hell, especially when they're doing the lines. Some areas of the body are just excruciating (I think the chest is one of those areas, so good luck with that bud :))

My girlfriend got a tattoo on her ribcage that ended up taking 4 hours. I suggested her taking some hydrocodone and she did, but she said it didn't help with the pain at all.

Ya what kind of opiate are you planning on taking. I've heard that with viceral pain oxymorphone (opana) works best. I'm not sure if a tattoo falls into that category because I've never had one.

If you are gonna use oxycodone and the tattoo does realease hystamines try diphenhydramine. Of course you don't want to take so much that you are nodding but, if you're tolerant that shouldn't be an issue.

That's what I did, even though I didn't use a pankiller. Popped a few hydroxyzine beforehand and it helps with the itching and the raised welts that tattoos create

Wiggi, I'm just assuming based on opana's track record with visceral pain. Pain affecting organs and soft tissue. It just stands to reason (IMO). Like I said I've never had a tattoo but, I'd assume a tattoo would be classified as visceral pain.

edit- I guess it's purely anecdotal but, it's worth a shot IMO.

I never knew that about Opana, that's interesting though. It would be next to impossible to get it though. I don't plan on getting a tattoo ever though.

oxy but my threshold is around ~20mg

so if i take roughly 35mg and a benadryl.. that will cure the itch?

Tattoo artists arent supposed to give you a tattoo if you are intoxicated but this really only relates to alcohol. Unless you take too much you won't look impared enough where they won't give you a tattoo.

Don't take any NSAID's including aspirin so no percodan's. Since percodan (aspirin and oxycodone) is rarely prescribed anymore because they script percocet which has acetaminophen and oxycodone in it's place you should have no worries. Acetaminophen is not a NSAID and won't thin your blood so any opiate combination with that in it is fine.

I have one tattoo and i got it done after taking a few tylenol#3's, some weed and i think some valium as well. I had no problems with it and it healed properly. I didnt feel a thing but it was done on my forearm and it usually doesent hurt to get a tattoo there i don't think.

As for the itch i would highely recomend getting some hydroxyzine for it. Hydroxyzine is much better then diphenhydramine (benadryl) at controlling itching caused by anything. It's prescription only which sucks but it can also be bought easily off the net. Also most doctors don't care about prescribing it. Diphenhydramine will help the itch a good bit just not as good as hydroxyzine.

Itching at the tattoo site was actually the worst thing for me. When it starts to heel up and it starts to peel it itchies like crazy. Or atleast it did to me. Also remember to keep that polysporin/polytopic on the tattoo because it prevents infection and reduces scaring. Do not scratch it or peel any of the skin off yourself as this causes scaring. Just let nature run it's course.

Right...

I actually read through some medical journal articles when looking for relief from my full-body itching, and it's been found that it takes 75 times more histamine to produce an itch than Benadryl. That's pretty amazing. Plus... it's cheaper for me to buy than Benadryl, so it's really the only antihistamine I use.

Plus, although I haven't noticed it myself, it's considered to be an anxiolytic, which I can only see as being helpful while sitting in a chair having needles dragged across your chest for hours.

Still... if you feel the need to scratch, give it a little slap instead.

If you want to take the drugs because of the pain, don't sweat it. It's really not that bad. It's like enduring a mild pain for a long time, like a toothache. I mean, I can imagine getting very dark blackwork on your rib cage would be gnarlier than knuckle tats, but still. :) You'll be fine.

And you don't want to know you had to take pain killers to endure your first tattoo!

I got part of a tattoo done sober and the rest done on Oxy and Klonopin - I didn't really notice a difference in pain/itching, but that may just be me.

I'd recommend Lubriderm for the itching/aftercare stage.

Ya I'd say that would do it. If you do go that route you may want to take less oxy than usual. The diphen will make the oxy more noddy. You may even want to try some with the oxy before hand to see how it treats ya.

One last thing is you can get diphen in store brand sleep aids. It's alot cheeper than benadryl and is the exact same thing. Just make sure the only ingredient is diphenhydramine and you got a winner.
