Harm Reduction Injection Complications FAQ and Mega Thread

So I have been mainlining for many many years. It started with meth, moved to cocaine, and finally heroin. As of late my veins are completely gone. Cant find any of them anymore. I have exhausted my jugulars and I know about the femoral but I tried it once and hit an artery. Let me tell you, this was not enjoyable what so ever!!! So anyone know any techniques to get your veins to come back? If so I would really love to hear them!!!

I do feel very bad for your addiction, but this is a very sad post. Your body is telling you its finally time to stop.

I find it hard to get my head around how this sort of thing can happen. It just seems so awful, I mean it could have been completely prevented from happening. What a waste of a life.

?? it happens to anyone that injects long enough.
i hardly consider my life to be a waste and i have no veins left. 2 college degrees and have a very fulfilling career and awesome relationship.

Arterial Shot?

I've read plenty of reports on here about arterial shots with scary outcomes. I think I may have hit an artery a couple weeks ago (suffering no ill effects, its just been on my mind lately and I'm curious).
So I'm gonna be a big man and admit that I relapsed after over two months sobriety via Suboxone. I purposefully stopped taking them to cleanse my receptors whilst I sat on a bag of H (the suspense was terrible, let me tell you). Anyway, when I started feeling mild W/D symptoms (yawning, watery eyes & nose, nothing too painful) I got out my gear and proceeded.
I registered dark red, but the warm liquid didn't travel up my vein, I felt intense heat in my hand (I injected into the crook of my elbow). It scared the fuck outta me and lasted a couple hours and I did not get high from the shot. It was just a prickly heat sensation in my hand, no pain.
The fact that the heat travelled to my hand and not my heart was pretty indicative of an arterial shot--but there was no pain or swelling and it went away. This was roughly a week and a half to two weeks ago, my hand is fine, no effects are palpable.
SO--am I okay? Was this indeed an arterial shot? I'm thinking it was. So my main question is did I do any damage? Djsim, I'd like your input here :)

Bump, it is already halfway down the page!!

Please don't bump your own thread - bad form - especially after only five minutes ;)

If the blood was dark red it should be a vein but the effect you describe sounds like it was maybe an arterial shot. Maybe you were dehydrated enough to make the arterial blood look dark? As it was two weeks ago and isn't causing problems I'd say you got away with it. Always worth just pressing the plunger a tad before going the whole hog to make double sure it's going the right way though. Arterial shots always swell up instantly and hurt like hell in my experience. Would be very hard to not realise you were doing it.

^I bumped because I thought it was gonna disappear under all these new threads and stuff. Sorry mods, I don't wanna be a guy with "bad form." :)

Fair enough, my apologies, it's just something that's so alien and intense to me. Also dislike needles, I hate it when you go to the doctor for your yearly and they pull blood out of your arm, the vein on the inside of your elbow you know? Ugh what an uncomfortable feeling...You sir are a madman :D.

merged.

like shambles said it sounds like you got lucky and should be fine. if circumstances change and you start getting symptons again i would definitely see a doctor

I'm going to agree with Shambles here. If it was dark red, it should've been a vein.

What kind of rigs are you using Eagleman? If you're using something with a long needle, and you weren't holding it still enough, it might've slipped in, out of the vein, and into an artery...however, the absence of pain doesn't sound like an artery shot.

How many units did you use? How much dope did you use? How long was it since your last dose of suboxone? How much suboxone did you do last?

Knowing these answers might help explain part of this. I don't know what else would have caused the "intense heat" you felt in your hand though, that's just a mystery to me.

If it was weeks ago when this occured, you're likely fine. However, I'm sure there are some IV complications that would take weeks or months to ensue before you would know about them (I don't know what they would be personally, but I'm sure that they exist).

Most artery shots cause problems within hours to days, not weeks though, so if it "was" an artery shot, then you should be fine. I can't say for sure 100% though, it'll be interesting to get djsim's opinion on this one.

This thread could be merged into the IV Complications thread if a mod cares to do so.

LOL

Looks like leftwing beat me to it!

Getting blood drawn is a bit less desirable sensation than IVing something.

Plus, I've seen people get THE WORST track marks from getting their blood drawn, by a doctor or Blood Services. If you're using a small enough gauge, and are injecting, know what you're doing, etc, then it's a lot less noticeable than when you go to the doctor's.

Captain Heroin: I was using a 3 mL syringe with a 28g detachable 1" pin. I injected 2 mL of solution (.2 dope with 2 mL water) So I don't think I went in too deep and I sure as hell used enough dope.. and the Suboxone didn't block the H, because after the panic subsided I shot up again using my "trusty" vein and everything was grand...

Huh.

Well, 1" sounds a bit long. I'm currently using 28G 1/2" myself, and I find the 1/2" needles to be insanely long, I'm used to the 31G short tips (5/16" I think) myself.

If you're sure you didn't slip in any further, then I'm guessing the vein may not have been able to take 2ml as easily as a main vein would have. 2ml is a lot of liquid to IV. How quick did you push it in? I like to take a good 3 maybe 5 seconds to push in 16-20 units.

Maybe its 1/2". One inch does seem a little long. I didn't really look at the needle cartridge when I cracked it, I was in a hurry to get a buzz :) But I know its 28g. And yeah I push slow when I use these large barrels. Sometimes I re-register halfway thru the shot.

Fuck man.

I got caught a couple days ago, and had to use a 2'' long blue needle.

It was like a fucking bull-dart.

It made such a big hole in my fem, that blood was running down as if it was an open wound:|

Fucking horror show.
