I was just out with an old friend of mine last night and I had a long discussion with her on the topic of non-verbal communication and picking up on others' body language, and how big a role it really plays in the way we communicate with one another, and how for animals it's basically the only means of communication, which is why they seem to pick up on these cues even more so than humans. I think this kind of connecting with people on an emotional level through non-verbal cues is dismissed way too often, as it's not even something metaphysical or scientifically unexplainable really. It's just because this has been something so deeply ingrained within our subconscious mind ever since our very early ancestry in the animal kingdom that we don't usually even notice it on a conscious level.
This subconscious picking up on non-verbal emotional cues is what I feel is probably largely responsible for the "contact high" phenomenon as well. Couple that with the mirror neurons theory, and we might have a rather credible hypothesis for explaining the whole thing IMHO.
I feel that this thread has turned into a very interesting and thought-inspiring discussion. Excellent posts by Pimp Lazy and Immunity representing the different "sides" of this coin, both providing some very compelling points. Also, Xorkoth, some of the examples you describe are very similar to what has happened to me and my friends as well. Very interesting indeed.
