The Travel Thread - Second Destination

Planning on going to Brazil for 3 weeks or so in January. Rather coincidentally a good friend of mine is dating a Brazillian and will be over there with her around that time so we'll probably hook up. Desperately want to go to Rio and Florianopolis which is a sort of Brazillian Ibiza with amazing beaces, clubs etc. Looks amazing. Might try and get myself some Rainforest too before it all gets chopped down.

Planning holidays is almost as much fun as actually doing it :D

theres rain forest in rio!

From my own experience, it aint that great. Red Sea is a lot better.

My office hubby dives and even trains people in his spare time - also says this, that there are other better dive sites than the great barrier reef, the red sea being one of them. Though there are plenty of amazing dive sites in Australia, so best to make it a multi-site dive tour.

Have never dived before, snorkelling yes and I loved it in Thailand.<3

Felix just doesn't want to be at home for a cringing big 40th Birthday party!8o ... wants to hide under the sea.

Is a good plan too :)

Was in the Andaman Sea, national park and in Phuket and the Phi Phi islands.

Every day I had to go snorkelling, so loved following fish for ages to surface and realise I was miles away from the shore 8o Never realised before this that fish were so curious and friendly, they really seemed to like coming up to my hair swishing about under the water, to nibble on it.

Also took little nibble for them and it was amazing being surrounded by masses of begging sea creatures who would eat out of your hand.:)

Great memory. <3

If you wanna dive the GBR, do it from PNG. Completely unspoiled and cheaper, just make sure you don't get shot. But their home made bullets are to your advantage.

Better dive sites? Yes.

Bigger living organism on planet earth that will be dead in 50 years and worth seeing before its gone? You tell me.

There are many better dive sites than GBR and the red sea. But surely the GBR merits special attention?

Depends what you are wanting to see it for. GBR is a great thing to say you've "done", that's fair enough. And it will probably be totally fucked in 50 years.

But, I actually wanted to see stuff, and I saw much better stuff at the Red Sea than I did on GBR. And I didn't have to put up with fucking millions of wanky home counties backpackers using their old mans credit card!

OK what I and others on my trip saw at the GBR: Giant Turtles, Stingrays, 'Nemo', Blue Starfish, Giant Clams as well as countless other things I couldn't identify. One looked like a shark, scary! Did actually see a shark swimming near the boat on the way there.

That selection of creatures are a pretty amazing list of things to see.

But no mermaids? Lame. ;)

Its not just to say you've "done" it. Its been the biggest living organism on the planet for millions of years and it will be gone in 50. To me that is both special and extremely sad.

And you do 'see stuff'. C'mon. Spade's list is both far-fetched (you can't see ''Nemo" though I can't remember the scientific explanation why) and incomplete. To suggest you can't see stuff there is disingenuous. I'm not doubting your experience at the Red Sea was not supercallafragalistic etc but it just pisses me a little to see people writing off one of the wonders of the world as passe.

I would agree with you about the home-counties backpackers bit except for the fact that we had none on our boat....so I can't. Maybe it depends what company you go with.

Anyway, today I've been snorkelling off the Vietnam coast and had a brilliant day. I look forward to someone posting a follow up to say why I haven't and why the East side of Venus is FAR better for that sort of thing.

Hahah, I'm not overly concerned whether you're pissed off with my view of the GBR!! It's my view (but seemed to be agreed by others), given to Felix, and you can take it or leave it.

But I can't change the fact that I was hugely disappointed by the GBR, and found the Red Sea far better. I actually wish i'd taken a flight over the GBR, as I think that would have given a better perception.

I'd love to go surfing in Vietnam...you see any waves there? Hopefully a lot nicer than Birling Gap!

There's nothing far fetched about my list and you can see Nemo. We happened to go on a glass bottom boat trip after the snorkelling with a guide who showed us 'nemo'.

My list isn't a definitive one either, simply a small selection on what was there.

The worst thing about the GBR is that it's 3hrs away and the day I went was choppy as fuck which meant sea sickness for almost all involved. Yuk!

It's a bit inconvenient having the fucking thing so far away. Poor planning.

LOL! :D

I don't like boats, nor open water much when there's no dry land in sight. Freaks me out a little. But for the GBR it was worth it, obviously. Did anyone steal a bit of coral for a souvenier?

I fucken hate boats. (Unless they are 50 ft long, staffed by butlers and well stocked with Belverdere and more honiez than a Jay-Z video).

No, didn't steal any coral. I did a big wee instead. :)

I was bursting for a piss the whole time actually!

I was tempted to steal a bit of coral I found on the beach but didn't in the end.
