Lsd and breastfeeding

A friend of mine is breastfeeding, and asked me about whether or not LSD will affect the breastmilk. My first reaction is to say yes, but part of me won't stop at the knee-jerk reaction. She knows she can't take anything else, she's been sober since she first got pregnant, and she's finally getting a chance to go out to a club and go dancing, and wanted to know. I've already told her that it probably will, and i'm sure it's not a good idea, but my searching has not revealed anything. Anyone have any info for me?

What is wrong with your friend, wanting to go to the club and drop acid when she has an infant to take care of?

i think you guys are jumping the gun a bit, talking shit about the lady for wanting to drop acid while having a kid.
It is not irresponsible to take acid if you have children, just higher a babysitter and you're golden.
And she decided to ask before actually doing it, which shows responsibility IMO.

I would say as long as you don't breast feed for a couple of days it would probably be alright....

LSD is out of your system pretty quickly.... i doubt psychedelic milk would just sort of chill there for very long....

Excerpt from the Bluelight mission statement said:
Bluelight does not condone or condemn the use of illegal drugs. Bluelight is a place for people to ask questions and educate themselves about drugs so they can make more informed decisions regarding their personal use.
If people who lurk here see people getting flamed for asking questions this can be really off putting for others to post questions. Unless asked please keep your personal feelings that are irrelevant out of the thread.

We are about information. This is an important question that deserves an answer.

Seems that the mother would have to make the final decision. If I was breast feeding, I would LIMIT drug use and certainly not breast feed w/i 24 hours of ingesting a drug. HOWEVER, I doubt that the TRACE amounts of LSD that would be left in the breast milk... if any after 24 hours would cause any harm to the infant.

Women who breast feed, smoke and drink... not saying that's proper, but it happens all the time. If the mother is mentally stable and able to pump enough "clean milk" prior to dosing dont you think that she should be able to take a psychedelic?

From a female pshyconautess perspective I would say that it is fine for her to enjoy herself and trip and have a good night <3 She brought life into the world and Im sure tripping after that would be something that I personally would want to do :) If the mother feels that the experience will not harm the child... who are we to judge?

I was not trying to flame anyone. The woman should be thinking about her newborn child instead of the last time she got high and her want to go out and party. If I had a child, there would be no drug use at all. I would be home holding my baby and reading.

^^ not sure you quite have the female perspective friend... its very different for women... If we're pot heads/ alcoholics/ dopers we have to quit while pregnant and breast feeding... LSD is one of the shorter lasting drugs. And im sure that it is a RARE occasion that a new mother gets to have a night out to herself... I know that I would take advantage of that <3

Simple. An' She Probably Derserves It.

What, all the time?

Sounds balanced.

Keep in mind the woman ax'in' the question,
has also been clean
of drugs for a 9+ month period.

Give her a break, dude.

Baby-sitter 'til straight.
Express enough milk proir.
Use express'd milk until LSD metabolized.
Go back to breastfeedin'.
/end.

PEACE

Well presumably even if the trace amounts of Acid were passed through the breastmilk, wouldn't it have no real effect on the infant. And presuming the mother doesn't take a ridiculous dose, won't her body process most of the acid, and its metabolites being inert. If ANY acid is left over to be passed through the breast milk it would not be enough to have any effect (Even biochemically) on the child. And if the mother breastfeeds a few hours after the drug has worn off even less amounts would be in her system. So long as she does the Acid and gives a few hours afterward before breastfeeding I imagine it should be fine.

It can't be that rare of an occasion if she's breastfeeding...

That makes no sense at all.. mothers are quite tied to their newborns while breast feeding. My sister in law just had a baby and she didnt get her first night out until about 6 months into breast feeding... its a full time job.

While not LSD this may still be useful.

...
Both tramadol and its pharmacologic active metabolite are excreted into human milk (1). After a single 100-mg IV dose, the cumulative amounts of the parent drug and metabolite excreted into milk within 16 hours were 100 and 27 µg, respectively (1).
...
1. Product information. Ultram. McNeil Pharmaceutical, 1997.

That's a little more than 0.1% of the weight in the milk, anyone know if other drugs compare?
If lsd does have similar absorbtion it would be present in sub-microgram amounts.

She can feed her baby formula or something until it's totally safe to breastfeed again. Or pump some milk beforehand and store it in the fridge.

I can see where she is coming from. Jeez I'm almost at the baby stage myself and can't imagine going so long w/o any mind altering substances. Guys have it so easy in that and many other baby related departments. They shouldn't even be allowed to speak here (j/k).

If she can somehow do it w/o harming the baby in anyway, what the issue then.

New mothers have the right to go out. There are family members that can baby sit. Then wait until the drug is outta the body and feed w/ formula until then. What's the harm then? Both baby and mommy are happy.

Some internet info:

To the best of our knowledge, this issue has never been formally studied, however LSD is metabolized fairly quickly in the body. While any trace amounts will most likely be gone from breast milk within a day (24 hours), to be safe, you might want to give yourself at least 2 days to allow it to pass. You may also want to pump whatever milk was produced during this time and discard it.

About 1/2 life of LSD

This is how half-lives work. Drugs with first-order kinetics (such as LSD) are broken down in a process of exponential metabolism, which usually takes 6 half-lives until the drug is "gone" (6 half-lives of LSD would 15 hours).

Since the half-life is the time it takes for 50% of the drug to be broken down, the next half-life will break down 50% of the remaining 50%.

In other words, taking 100ug of LSD will result in the metabolism of 50ug in the first half-life. The following half-life will metabolize 50% of the remaining 50ug, leaving 25ug behind. After that, the next half-life will metabolize 50% of that, leaving 12.5ug behind and so on and so on until there is a negligible amount left.

Its ridiculous to say a woman can't leave her child with the father, other family members, or a babysitter for a few hours. What she does with her now scarce free time is her decision.

Also, LSD has one of the shortest half-lives of any drug (3-6hrs) and is completely undetectable after two days, and very difficult to detect after 24hrs. Simply pump some milk beforehand and discard the milk produced during the day or two afterwards.

LSD breaks down in the body extremely fast. I would say its probably safe to feed half way through the trip to no ill effect (kid trippin).

Yes, yes, yes (*claps hands*).:)

Thank you all so much for the helpful answers. I'm going to tell her that her best bet, if she does decide to, is to not breastfeed for ~2 days afterwords, and to pump out whatever milk is there right after, and to have either some formula, or some spare milk pumped out beforehand for use during those 2 days.
