Pet Peeves

The seat cushions on the BART. A couple of days ago, somebody who had clearly pooed his pants sat on the seat behind me. The smell was so bad that I was getting sick.
Subway systems that I've seen in most other cities use some kind of seat covering, like plastic, or hard plastic seats that can be hosed down and sanitized at the end of the say. But for whatever reason, all of the BART trains I've been on, and I ride it as little as possible, use upholstered cushions. These are soft, but they cannot be properly cleaned. So, whoever sits on that seat after the homeless person who pooed his pants is also going to have a bad experience. And all of the bart trains stink.
And the bart floors are carpeted. Again, they can't be cleaned. Because of this, BART is the stinkiest train I've been on.

Last summer, I went mountain climbing with a vegan friend - he is in top physical shape, is a skilled mountain climber, and has more energy and endurance than most people i've climbed with. The whole week we were out, he ate less than me, had the same or less food prep time - ate things like bean spouts, humus, pita bread, no milk (I get sick whenever i drink milk) or eggs - many of the same things I was eating, except I had a packet of tuna every day and I usually have powdered soy milk when I go backpacking., Anyway, he dispelled my stereotype that vegans don't eat enough protein and therefore aren't in shape.

crappy radio stations that we have in canada that play the same set list every fucking day

Which is why I love the CBC, independent radio (like CJSR) and college radio. Depends on what you enjoy listening to though.

Oh, and to clarify my veg. peeve: I was dragged to a 'country' wedding this weekend, and on three separate occasions people considered asking me that question the height of humour. I have no problem if people are genuinely curious about vegetarianism; I love talking about food in general.

Fucking hillbillies though.

^^ Hahaha I lol'd Thiz =D

Oh oh! I finally thought of a pet peeve of mine!!
At work people are so lazy about cleaning up after themselves in the kitchen, so I'm usually the one left after lunch etc who's stacking the dishwasher and wiping the benches etc 8)
I don't mind that so much cos I enjoy cleaning.
But even when the others DO clean up their dishes, they always stack the dishwasher full right at the front, they're too lazy to open it all way so they can fill the BACK of the dishwasher. And I'm talking literally stacking mugs on top of each other at the front of the top rack, which probably takes more effort than to open the rack up the whole way to place their mugs in at the back. Pfft, so silly!

Microsoft office 2007. I fucking hate this piece of garbage program. If their goal was to turn a useful and user-friendly program into a confusing piece of shit, they succeeded.

Mmmmm...I love Trader Joe's!

I've been vegetarian since I was 14, so almost years now, but I do it more because I think the idea of eating flesh is gross.

My boss constantly gets into it with me trying to get me to exlpain myself, which honestly, is fine once, but when he asks me once a month and ignores my reasoning because it doesn't make sense to HIM, it ticks me off.

He is the same way with not understanding the difference between clinical depression and being sad.

Agreed. I stopped eating meeting most meat at about seven, and wouldn't touch it by eight... so about 13/14 years now, and I've never once a had a craving... just.... :p

I had an asshole boss too :X I worked at bar/restaraunt the summer I moved out of my parents house for about four months (until I got a good job :)) and had a boss like that. The menu at the restaurant was literally like, potato skins, chili, buffalo wings, mozzarella sticks, and a bunch of other very non-vegan appetizers and deserts... when I got the job he told me that the best thing about working there was "the free food." I couldn't eat any of the food, obviously, besides being vegetarian I'm lactose intolerant, and told him this….
Not sure why but he took it as a great personal offense and was continuously trying to convince me to eat their food. One evening I turned down something and he started talking about how "weird vegan hippies are going to make people think this is a gay bar.” I told him I wasn't trying to offend him and that the only reason anyone ever knew I was vegan was because he was constantly COMPLAING about it out loud (going up to table and lecturing customers about ordering meals w/ meat would most likely NOT be the best way to successfully make large tips) but he was just ranting at me and being a condescending asshole… so I told him to go fuck himself and quit. There, another pet peeve, nosy/mean bosses :p I've had too many.

Mrs. Mia Wallace: you write

"pasta, rice, potatoes, vegetables, fruits, nuts, etc. so i don’t understand why being vegan is viewed as being such a weird and impossible thing for some people. "

first of all, I don't view veganism as weird for some people, just not feasible for MYSELF. The foods you jsut listed are almost entirely carbohydrates. I like to eat a balanced diet of 55/25/20 (carbs / fat / protein). And, I eat 3000 calories a day, sometimes 3500.

If you or someone else can submit to me a diet that satisfies those two goals and remains vegan, and doesn't require 25 hours per week of prep and cook time, I'll eat it.

I named the most mainstream foods I could think of (and nuts are a fat :)) but yes, it wasn't the most balanced selection, I admit.

However, here's something you can make in 5 minutes (category the foods fall into is based on my memory of the exchange system so I may be off …. the vitamins/nutrients listed are a hazy remembrance of what the many nutritionist I’ve had have told me, so feel free to correct me if wrong as I’m not a nutritionist)-

Salad:
-some dark green leafy veggies, such as kale or spinach (has calcium and vitamin B2, iron, pretty sure there's vitamin D as well, carb)
-olive oil & vinegar as salad dressing (olive oil is a monosaturated fat)
-any other vegetables that you like (carbs, there are like 6 or 7? Categories of veggies I can’t remember them or their various offerings)
-walnuts, pecans, almonds, pretty much any nuts (classified as a fat, but has considerable amount of protein and many other essential nutrients)
-dried fruit (carb, DRIED fruit is especially good for vegans, I remember because I was always forced to eat raisons/dates, but I can’t remember why at all)
-garbanzo beans (counts as half carb/protein, has iron and calcium)
-grilled tofu (tofu is obviously a protein, but has some essential fats in it like omega 3)

Side:
whole grain bread w/ peanut butter (vegan bread is surprisignly easy to find, Ralphs/Vons has it... carb but has zinc, protein, fiber, and more.... peanut butter is a healthy fat but can be counted as a protein in larger amounts [2 TB + up])

Drink:
soy milk (dairy, calcium)

Not that difficult :) and that's still too much, I microwaved a corn tortilla w/ soy chicken, a little bit of almond cheese, sundried tomatoes, lettuce and onions and it took me about 45 seconds to throw it together and 1 minute 30 seconds to microwave, and that's got your fats-carbs-protein combo.

... and if you still want less work, Whole Foods and Trader Joes both frozen vegan meals that will have the carb-protein-fat combo... you can buy them and store in your freezer for when you really don't have time to put anything together. :)

It really bothers me when people always have little or nothing positive to say. just the general vibe of what they're saying. mainly when they are talking about people. I try really fucking hard to maintain a positive outlook and look for the better qualities in people and its real easy to get caught up in drama and talking shit.

and bros in huge trucks with giant engines that pull up beside me and want to race me. i dunno man, this has happened at least 3 times since friday already. it's like i know it's a stupid ego thing, but i just have to show you that yer truck aint all that. :D

The meal Described by Mrs Mia wallace does sound good (with the possible exception of the tofu--I haven;t ever been able to develop a liking for the texture of that stuff).

But, reading that meal suggestion reminded me of another pet peeve:

Eating a nutritious, well balanced diet usually costs a lot of money (whether eating vegan or veegetarian or not). It is frustrating that some fo the best foods for us are very expensive: Berries, colored peppers, nuts, leafy greens. In terms of calories per dollar, these items are way up there in price.

Frozen entrees are also very expensive. Eating a 3000 - 3500 calorie a day diet of those foods would resuult in a very high monthly food bill.

Yet, junk food is dirt cheap. Most of the worthless garbage served at fast food places provides a tremendous number of calories for the buck. Other nutrient-less crap like oreos or potato chips do too.

Oh, and your last boss sounds like a real asshole. You should have pretended to take a bite of one of his appetizers and then vomited all over him. That would probably have been the last time he coerced you to eat them :)

OK, here's a pet peeve:

People who have no constructive argument / statement / point so instead they launch a mindless ad hominum attack. Said attack is often based largely or entirely on assumptions made by the ad hominum attacker; said assumptions are often false.

Grow your own!!

^ sometimes it can be a bit hard if you live in a big city, in an apt, or just dont have the right soil or conditions, or even time.

back to new pet peeves:

The new Geico mascot. This pair of eyeballs attached to the money clip is a pitiful replacement for the Gecko and the cavemen.

Is that true? many fruits and nuts grow on trees. I would need a pretty big pot to grow a tree!

i also hate it when people tell me "the way your goin now youre either gonna end up dead or in jail." I fuckin hate that, ive hear it soo many times from alot of different people...pisses me off.sure,im friends with gang members, but im not in any gang...its different

Ha how many times have i heard that one.....In relation to my arrests, to when i was makin moves, or just about my friends like u said . I got blood, crip, king friends....it dont mean that i am involved in that shit. actually that is one that pisses me off is people havin bad impressions of 'gang members' and talk all this shit about how ppl who are bangin are pieces of shit and violent thugs n this that n the third....when they never knew nobody who was in no gang anyways. when they think shit like "oh you have to murder a pregnant crip girl and kill her baby to get in the bloods" n stupid shit like that. made up rumors that is far from true. Ppl acting like its all bloodthirsty shit like ruthless, not caring who gets shot, little old ladies or little kids not giving a fuck.

People believe all that shit, Not realizing that when somebody who aint in the set gets brought into shit on accident (for example say a kid gets hit by a stray bullet when dudes is busting off between 2 sets) then there is a definate problem and the higher up of the "violent thug gang members" will find the person that allowed their bizness to affect a innocent strangers life, n that person gets discipline. yea thee is some fucked up shit that happens n sure drgs, violence is a prob. in the hood so i aint supporting gangs or watever but i just hate it when people dont realize that not everone in gangs is a bad person , or when ppl say shit about my friends thinkin like they really are bad ppl, and i am just defending them for no reason, they refuse to believe that it could just be good peoples .

Yeah for sure! Many plants will grow to the size of their pot though, say for example, you could grow a lemon tree in a medium to large sized pot and it would produce fruit if it was kept healthy.
And on your balcony in planter boxes you could easily grow lettuce, tomatoes, beans, strawberries, heaps of stuff!

Hmm. Maybe I should grow CASHEWS! They are ridiculously expensive. I could make bank!

Then again processing them for human consumption is tough.
