I am answering the question, whether you want to believe it or not, if you smoke pot everyday you are a stoner, under the generalization of every other person. It is only the people who smoke pot who try to disregard this fact.

I still disagree completely (that marijuana use over-rides every other aspect of one's life in the eyes of others AND that i'm a "pretentious wanker" for wanting to be defined by something other than smoking pot).

I disagree with it to, but that does not mean it is invalid. If someone is ignorant about all others aspects of your life, but they know you smoke cannabis? What will they call you? Stoner, just how it is. just the ideas of people who don't give a fuck about pot smokers just because it is illlegal.
Edit : I didnt say you were a pretentious wanker for wanting to smoke pot, but for the reason that most people who say they smoke cannabis for the spritual and conscious expansion, and i think that is utter fucklumps.

I get what you're saying, and there's an extent to which I wish there wasn't such a stigma on marijuana use.
HOWEVER - If someone is ignorant about all other aspects of my life, it is very unlikely that they know about my marijuana use. This isn't an accident on my part. I learned about the stereotypes when I truly was a stereotypical, derogatory-term-type Stoner. After that phase, I realized that I would have to change some things if I wanted to A) continue enjoying something that I REALLY enjoy and also B) maintain the respect of others whether they smoked or not.
So I agree that, if someone knows nothing about you except that you smoke regularly, they're likely to label you. However, it's my opinion that the first thing you broadcast to a stranger (via words, clothes, body language, etc.) shouldn't be about your recreational drug use.
P.S. - What I love about the internet is that I always start out getting pissed by what someone says, then when we get to about the third exchange we both realize we understand each other a lot more than we thought.

Didn't even read this before I typed my "P.S." - the OTHER thing I love about the internet is learning words like "fucklumps" . . we agree very much sir.

I've always seen "Stoner" as a derogatory term, too. Mainly to do with lethargy and wastefullness. Shit, I love to get whacked out of my mind during the day, if i can, but it's mostly at night, with friends, where we actually have a good time, even then, it's no more than once a week.
This, compared to using it as an escape from the world, or a way of accelerating time
I've known a few people that fit the derogatory term perfectly, that essentially did nothing throughout highschool, save for get fucked up, their grades matched their attitude.
Personally, i'd say no. I enjoy using the substance, but i don't abuse it

bro, you talk like being a stoner is looked down upon or something? where do you live? like where i live everyone i know is pretty much a stoner or atleast friends with the stoner groups and what not and smoke now and then. its just not looked down upon man what world is everyone from?! whats wrong with being a stoner?!?!

There's nothing wrong with being a stoner at 17 (I know I was), but at a certain point, you need to have a little bit more interesting shit going on in your life than a marijuana habit.

Yeah I'd say I'm a stoner, in that I'm frequently stoned. I enjoy some stoner hobbies like netsurfing and going to the beach, but for the most part I have a pretty normal life. Except for the fact that I'm frequently stoned.

haha. Man, you come from Canada, i'm from the most conservative state in Australia (quite conservative country :S). Basically, i'm trying to convey the same point as Doulble Ewe. I was having fun with weed, but it never became a central part of my lifestyle (to the exclusion of more important things, such as my other interests). I drink a beer most nights, but i don't get smashed, but i couldn't really care if my friends got smashed every night either.
Like i said, i enjoy the stuff :D but when you're trying to talk about something meaningful or important or slightly more complex than boring daily shit, and you get blank stares, i'd say that the use of MJ may be impeding some people's personal development, hence why i'd say 'stoner' is a derogatory term, and i try not to emulate it.
i guess i am if you look at the amount i smoke. usually 10-20€ a month. if i got weed at home, i will smoke 3 joints a day. good thing i always put in one week breaks before buying again. i got my shit together though, gonna have my bachelors degree soon, i do sports and i have a loving girlfriend (who never smokes). its ok i guess. i think i will drop it eventually. just very convinient to smoke out, since most of the time im chilling at home with my roomie anyways. playing computer, watching tv shows...stoner stuff. more fun on weed, but i do it sober as well. my number one hobby, longboarding, syngergizes with weed rather well too.

That is true.
But I have been puffing a bit more lately as I have been cutting back on the booze. Now that I think about it I smoked pretty much daily for about a half decade if not a year or two more. Eventually my life got to the point where I was unable to smoke everyday. For a long time I never thought I would stop. I most likely will always smoke occasionally.

When my brother is pale, unshaven, with black rings round his bloodshot eyes, eyelids half closed and lower lip drooping, and can't remember what he was asked 2 minutes ago or what he was doing, I tell him he's looking and acting like a proper stoner and to sort it out :D. He loves his cannabis so needs reminding from time to time...it's not a good look.
