I was going to post this in ADD, but I'm too scared of being flamed into oblivion. Nice reputation you've garnered yourself there, ADD.

So, has anyone seen any data on the effects of long term, daily pod tea usage? I haven't seen a study anywhere. Have there ever been any that any of you fine people know about?

UPDATE!

This study indicates that poppies contain cadmium, lead, and even arsenic.

Poppy seed suffers from cadmium contamination.

This study shows that increased soil cadmium levels actually increases poppy seed yields, which might suggest that growers purposefully fertilize with cadmium to increase yield.

Cadmium content of poppy seeds

This article also indicates that in their experiments, most of the cadmium from the soil went into the seeds, although some went into the rest of the plant.

I'd like to know, too. My biggest fear is contamination with fungi like aflatoxin or large amounts of chemical pesticides, herbicides, etc. Other than that, I'd imagine the pods themselves don't cause much problem beyond the typical opiate side effects of constipation, weight loss/gain, impotence, etc. I could be wrong though...

I can't find anything that would suggest there are aside from severe addiction and the like.

One thing that has recently come to light with another poster is cadmium and lead heavy metal poisoning. Apparently, poppy seeds and therefore pods, are laden with cadmium and other heavy metals that aren't excreted by the body and just continue to accumulate in organs. In the amount used for tea, the content can be massive.

^^ that's exactly the kind of thing I was afraid of. Researching now...

Did this poster have a source for the info? First hand experience?

Edit:
I'm seeing a lot of hits on cadmium in poppy seeds, but nothing on organically grown pods... I wonder if this is still an issue if just using pods sans seeds.

I wouldnt post this in ADD, simply because this question is suited for ADD.

For your answer, possible hearing loss, dependence and addiction.

Well we're tapering down anyway, but this heavy metal possibility really scares me. If addiction is the only downfall, that is something I knew very well going into it. I didn't bargain for cancer and my organs shutting down.

Ok, here are a few more things that I found:

http://www.cazv.cz/attachments/PSE_52_282-288.pdf

This study indicates that poppies contain cadmium, lead, and even arsenic. It also indicates that environmental stressors such as altitude, etc cause poppy plants to have increased cadmium content. The spraying of certain kinds of pesticides also seemed to act as a stressor that caused increased cadmium storage from the soil into the seeds. It also confirmed previous conclusions that the seeds contain the highest percentage of cadmium.

http://www.uhul.cz/mcl/mon95eng/KAP2_1.php

"Poppy seed suffers from cadmium contamination. From the total volume of 249 samples analyzed, 22 of them exceeded the limit which is 8.8% in 1995 (31 from 130 in 1994 made 23.8%). Also the average cadmium content value has decreased to 0.38mg/kg in 1995 (compared to 1994 the value was 0.54mg/kg). 9 of the samples exceeded the limit for nickel and 19 sampled exceeded the zinc limit."

does taking poppy pod tea kill brain cells?

I cant imagine it kills brain cells like alcohol does as everytime I have ever done it (5times) I have never woke up with a headache.

That's hardly a valid diagnostic criteria, but you are correct in that it probably does not "kill brain cells" per se. What it will do, as with long term abuse of comparable opioids, is down-regulate the production of neurotransmitters in the brain, which is part of the reason that may addicts experience depression for many years after cessation, even permanently for some.

Its not exactly killing cells, but permanent alteration might be just as bad in some cases.

Do you have any references for the hearing loss? I'm particularly interested in reading more about this.... Thanks, e.

I'm too lazy to dig up a reference on hearing loss, but I know that's definitely true and is commonly associated with opiate use in general.

After using pod tea daily for a couple months, I experienced this weird sensation in my ear. Whenever I clenched my jaw tight, I'd feel this slight pain and pressure against the inside of my ear. I also felt this with daily OC use.

The pain and pressure went away some time after I quit using opiates.

Thanks for all the great info everyone! This thread seems like a possible success =)

Now I just need to find some info comparing pod tea to the actual heavy metal content of seeds. Either way, we're gonna get off this shit ASAP.

I have realized that as an everday user of pods/seeds I have determined that they are highly addictive. I just, for the firsy time, ran out and tappered with the seeds. I am inclined to beleive that this may be the worst WD's found thus far with opaites....ugh...
IMO I am wondering if the thebaine and other chemicals may induce a more profound WD than just the morphine/codiene alone. Anyone know the side affects other than the typical opiate WD's??
