the official 08-09 NFL thread

LL has to say "congratulations on your correct pick in that game, Pander Bear." :)

Tennessee DID, imo, control much of the game, especially early, but alas, the game is sixty minutes long, and at the end of those 60 minutes, the Ravens emerged victorious in an extremely close exciting well-played game.

Respect,

LL

i must say though, i do not like their chances next week.

Eagles Eagles Eagles

On page 1 of this thread, at season's beginning, I predicted the Eagles going all the way, and it looks like that could happen. I heard about predictions of the Cowboys going to the big bowl, but the Eagles knocked their asses out.;) Then in mid season, talk of the Giants going all the way. Once again, my Eagles knocked their asses out.;) Now we only have the Cardinals left. Could be a tough game too, but I think it is destiny for the Eagles to at least make it to the superbowl!!

Fly Eagles Fly, On the road to victory. Fly Eagles fly, score a touchdown 1,2,3!=D

I have no doubt that mcnabb will choke - like usual

the Eagles are too unpredictable for me to take seriously. yet, here they are a game away from the SuperBowl. hot damn I love professional football for these reasons. why is the ungrateful and grimy city of Philly blessed to be in their 5th NFC Championship of 8 years?

the easy answer is because of the resurgence of QB Donovan McNabb, yet I put much of this burden on their defense. despite them only having one big name defensive player, they have a very intelligent defensive football design and live by blitzing and putting pressure on the quarterback. Eagles fans are annoying as fuck - but I must commend them for how far they have gotten. that hilarious tie to the Bengals will never be forgotten, because it was most likely the worst football game I have ever watched in my entire life (and this counting Miami at Pittsburgh last year which was a shit snow fest).

Larry Fitzgerald may be the best wide receiver in the league and true freak of nature. Kurt Warner may be old, but he can still get the ball off. who in the world would have expected a Philly VS Arizona NFC Championship? this is why I love the NFL and all the money that everyone looses/wins in the playoffs.

my Pittsburgh Steelers dominated San Diego in the snow. it seems like right after Ohio State standout and blunt smoking speedster Santanio Holmes took a punt for 6, the Steelers never looked back. what surprised me the most is how dominant the Steelers run game was. that week bye for Pittsburgh seemed to work magically to reinvigorate their run game. "Fast" Willie Parker looks back, and with "Big" Ben Roethlisberger playing perfect football and their defense playing like the No. 1 defense in the NFL - who is the better team?

Vegas says that they are the best. they may very well be.

next up for the Black and Gold is the Baltimore Ravens - again. I despise the Ravens and how well they match up against the Steelers. hell, should the Ravens even be in this game? it seems like they beat Tennesse only because Joe Flacco got away from a horrible non-call of Delay of Game to get a reception which led to a field goal.

the Steelers beat the Ravcens twice. it is very difficult for a football team to beat a good football team three times. is the third time a charm for rookie Flacco and his veteran defense?

haven't the steelers won every time they have played a team they already beat twice that season?

Goddammn, I hate this oft-thrown around OPPOSITE OF LOGIC!

Yes, it is difficult for a team to beat another three consecutive times.

BUT NOT IF ONE OF THEM HAS *ALREADY* BEATEN THE OTHER ONE TWICE ALREADY!

That's like saying,

"You know, I know that you've just got the first 5 out of 6 powerballs correct - but I wouldn't get my hopes up, because you know how near-impossible it is to get 6 powerballs correct in a row!"

PLEASE LEARN MATH, PEOPLE!

I don't quite understand your logic here. obviously, Pittsburgh won the last two so they must be doing something right against the Ravens. however, when studying tape and your team lost - you know you must come up with a different approach to attack offensively and defend. if you have lost the last two games to a team - you know something is wrong. you obviously have to come up with a completely new game plan.

it would be ridiculous for Baltimore to come out and try the same run on first and second down, and if you don't have a first yet throw on third down offensive game plan. Baltimore is a great team and it is difficult to beat a great team three times in one season.

Ask me where Hines Ward played college ball, Jimmy :D ;)

UGA! it's no secret that is why in the cousin loving SEC I root for the Dawgs. Hines Ward is a guy I have admired from the start of his carreer. he is undersized and old - yet everybody despises this undersized old guy because he plays with so much intensity and grit. something not seen too often concerning the NFL and professional wide receivers. also, his bar in Pittsburgh is pretty rockin'.

Saying that tenesee lost because of that delay of game call is a cop out. even jeff fisher himself called it a horrible mistake, which it was, but admitted it was not the reason his team lost. The titans beat themselves, they commited turnovers in situtions where they had opportunities to score. The ravens outplayed the titans and deserved to win. ravens 0 turnovers, titans 3 turnovers, end of story.

that said, think the steelers offensive prowess coupled with their defense and previous victories over ravens gives them the edge over the ravens. its going to be a hell of a game, and could go either way. once again, whoever establishes the run and does not commit turnovers will win.

i would love to see cardinals / ravens in the superbowl and its a possibility in this upset playoff season, but i think pitt is the best team left, and willl likely take the lombardi over the eagles in the end.

just my 2 cents

Pittsburgh will stomp the shit out of the ravens.

why the AFC North is the best conference

why the AFC North is the best conference in the NFL

starting at the halfway point of the season, the NFL was obsessed with labeling a conference "the best in the league." with great ambitions they named the AFC East, the NFC South, and the NFC East as the premier football conferences established this year. while one of these conferences is great, the other mediocre, and the last down-right bad - they seemed to have forgotten a conference out of all this commotion.

the AFC North.

lets take a look at these three other, apparently, superior conferences.

the AFC East. I had a hard time believing that this was the best conference in football at the time they claimed so. with the faux-resurgence of the Bufallo Bills and the offensive scheming of the Miami Dolphins, it looked serious business at first. however, the Bills resorted back to the Bills and the NY Jets and NE Patriots failed to make the playoffs. while you could make an argument for the slighting of the Patriots, I would laugh if someone said the Jets deserved to be in (a team that people were crowning the AFC's champion after their rather lucky victory over the Tennessee Titans). needless to say, the only team that made the playoffs in this bad division was the Miami Dolphins. and we all know what happened to them and their lackluster performance in the first round of the playoffs.

the NFC South. ok, this conference turned out to be mediocre, but not great as most sports writers claimed. throughout the season the Carolina Panthers were gutting teams with their run attack and big name wide out in Steve Smith. the Atlanta Falcons looked tough behind Michael Turner and rookie Matt Ryan. hell, even the New Orleans Saints looked like they could have made the playoffs. playoffs. this is the word that seemed to spank the NFC South. the Panthers got whipped by the Arizona Cardinals. the state of Arizona continued to be a harbinger of doom for the southern conference as a week prior to that game they ended the hopes of the Atlanta dirty birds. is Arizona this good or was the NFC South simply that bad?

the NFC East. midway through the season it looked like even Dallas and Washington could be contenders. however, Jim Zorn (head coach of Washington) proved to be not so great of an acquisition and Tony Romo proved to be as bad as ever. a NY Giants teams sans Plaxico Burress looked to be an offensive fraud as Eli Manning reverted back to pre-Super Bowl Eli Manning. the inconsistent Eagles prove to be the only team left out of these three SUPREME, big market NFL conferences.

but can you take a team seriously that tied to the Bengals?

the AFC North looks as bad (as in good) as ever, with their brand of blood-bath, smash mouth, old school football. sure, this is the home conference to the Cleveland Browns and the Cincinnati Bengals (thanks state of Ohio). however, this AFC North AFC Championship will decide the winner of the Super Bowl. in fact, it might as well be labeled a bigger game than the SuperBowl.

pitts already should have lost to them earlier in the season, that blown touchdown call earlier in the season at the end of the game was bullshit. the ball never broke the plane.

both games were close, and both teams have tremendous momentum. its going to be one for the ages. pittsburgh obviously has an advantage with more offensive talent, but you can't underestimate the ability of the ravens defense to create turnovers and points. joe flacco is playing unbelievably well for a rookie, and if the ravens dont commit turnovers, its going to be damn close. a hell of a matchup anyway you look at it.

Since 1970, there has been 18 situations where a team that swept a squad in the regular season played that team for a third time in the playoffs. 11 of those 18 meetings saw the teams with the 2-0 records notching a third win in the series. So yeah, ignore all that "You can't beat a team three times" nonsense. You can.

Fucking man up Axl!!! The Steelers won't stroll through but they will have too much sting in their defense. I'm loving having this Monday off work, both games live on free to air here in Australia. Just need to swing Super bowl now (or rig my appointment book =D )

PS Don't ask how a skinny kid from New Zealand became a life long Steelers fan ;)

kewl man. there really are Steelers fans across the world. as someone who loves all sports, including Euro soccer tourneys - it's real nice hearing from an American football fan down under.

that's where must people make the the common mistake of misinterpreting this rule of football. the ball itself does not need to break the plane, it just needs to touch it. if you look at replays from the right angle the ball most certainly touches the plane.
