the official 08-09 NFL thread

Can you fucking believe the COLTS, THE COLTS, got knocked out last night??

And arizona actually WON??

WTF IS GOING ON???

Yes and yes.

As last year's non-anomaly of a season showed us, the three most talented teams in the NFL (the AFC, at least), are the Patriots, the Colts, and the Chargers.

The Patriots were the recipients of bad bad luck TWICE this season (losing Brady, the NFL's second most valuable player when healthy) to an injury less than 1 percent of the way into this season, and THEN, after rallying to finish 11-5 ANYWAY, became only the second 11-5 team EVER to miss the play-offs.

The Colts and Chargers were also the recipients of bad luck this regular season, but to a lesser degree:

The Colts played with an injured Manning for the opening several games of this season, AND, additionally, the one out-of-nowhere-surprise team in the NFL this season just happened to be in their division, so even though the Colts rallied to finish 12-4 despite The Best Player In The NFL being injured for much of it, they were stuck with a #5 seed, instead of a #2 or #3 seed that a 12-4 record normally carries with it.

And the Chargers, because of possessing one of the worst head coaches in the history of the NFL (did you see how nervous he appeared WITH HIS TEAM ON THE OPPONENT'S 20 YARD LINE IN OVERTIME?! - this fucking abomination of a head coach actually EXPECTS his team to self-destruct whenever they're on the verge of victory! - PATHETIC!), and because of a horrendous call in Week 2, and because of several extremely close losses to excellent teams, finished 8-8, even though their talent suggests that they should go AT LEAST 11-5 even with their horrendous head coach.

So no - I'm not the slightest bit surprised that the Chargers beat the Colts - they have the two most high powered offenses in football, average to slightly above average defenses, and they played a pretty even game in every respect, and the home team won.

As for Arizona - they're terrible, the Falcons are also terrible, and, according to the rules of play-off football (that even Donovan McNabb probably knows), one of them HAD to win.

this is true. I was in fits when they fired Marty Schottenheimer (sp-whatever). sure, he was suspect of playing Marty Ball but at least he would carry them to a better record with better composure. Turner just doesn't do it for me, and apparently San Diego, where they are literally littered with talent.

gotta love that the 8-8 Chargers might come to Pittsburgh next weekend while Tennesse might be stuck with the 11-5 Ravens.

yes, thank god for the Ravens' 6 seed. they are the most intimidating team in the playoffs, not because of their impotent QB play but because of their stifling defense - of course.

so does anybody have any predictions or comments for this weekends' playoff games?

San Diego at Pittsburgh. I will take Pittsburgh by 10.

Ravens at Titans. Titans by 7.

Eagles at Giants. Giants by 3 (I could see Philly with the upset, if they just weren't so god damned unpredictable).

Arizona at Carolina. Carolina in a blow-out.

I suppose I am going with the seedings this round. I do think that the only upset capable teams are the Eagles and the Ravens. we shall see. this is truly the best time of the year for such a football fanatic as myself and I'm sure many of you feel the exact same way.

you think so? it's a definite possibility, like I said, due to their defense. however, I think that the Titans defense is so well rounded that it can stop a pretty one dimensional Ravens offensive threat (running the ball). for the Ravens to win, Flacco would have to step up and complete a couple huge plays downfield.

i dont know too much about american football because im british, but watching the last two chargers games has been really exciting and ive put a bet on them to get to the super bowl at 4-1, and another for them to win it at 13-1

The Ravens are a FRAUD.

My 30-something mother-of-two sister could beat Joe Flacco in a 40-yard dash.

Mark this post.

Ravens 10
TITANS 26

Flacco is just a leader, plain and simple, he has been just as impressive as Ryan this year, and with that Defense , I wouldnt count the Ravens out of any game.

Ravens 23-13 Titans

Like i said in the prediction thread, most entertaining weekend of playoff football ever, i love the underdog and was rootin for em the whole way! :D

I think the chargers have a chance against the steelers, they are a very hot team right now. Whoever commits more turnovers will lose!

I say san diego 24 pittsburgh 17 to go with the theme of this weekend!

If san diego can't establish the run then its all over though, rivers will be harassed all day by the steel curtain.

what a return by holmes!

i knew he was gone after he passed the 2nd defender, great speed in the snow.

Looks like we've got ourselves a game folks!

as does my predicted ravens win.

what does LL have to say about it?

LL has to say "congratulations on your correct pick in that game, Pander Bear." :)

Tennessee DID, imo, control much of the game, especially early, but alas, the game is sixty minutes long, and at the end of those 60 minutes, the Ravens emerged victorious in an extremely close exciting well-played game.

Respect,

LL
