Its true, male or female its a rare breed that spends their time pining over virtually inaccessible psychedelic powders.

yep, and it's what makes us all so fucking lucky and full of fucking enlightenment! :D

I tend to agree mostly though with the first reply to this whole thread...forgot your name man...the nerdy ass mother fucker :)

If it makes you feel better, here's a clearly psychedelically inspired girl shredding with one of the best drummers ever... Prepare for a mindfuck of Mckenna-esque proportions!

I find it funny that one of Zach Hill's best albums is called "Masculine drugs" Food of the Gods for thought...

fuck ya rock the marnie! i dig her. hXc.

As for the original question...

I am a dude. I know just as many girls as guys who take psychedelics, and more girls take them for more than recreational reasons. My dude friends just want to get fucked up, my chick friends wanna explore the universe! Which is why I would rather trip with my lady friends. Also, I seem to be on a female kick. Goils, goils, goils! Oh my goodsnesses! Whats am I goings to dos!? Look at all dems goils. SHEESH!

what I want to know is how many of the male psychonauts are strictly heterosexual.....

*raises hand*

I'm not. =D

^I think the most accurate and better question (instead of acting like a flamming chelsea girl) would be to ask "how many male psychonaughts are confused?"...this goes far deeper than mere sexuality...the reasons for confusion, if any in the first place...I usd to get that way...nowadays pscyhedelics (my favorites like LSD and DMT), make me feel actually completely centered and "one of the bros" like I was before I fucked up my mind and went all delusional....life's definately been starting to turn around for me and all I had to do was not trip everday and fucking call my girlfriend back when she would call me..lmfao.....Ying to the Yang motherfucker... me = strait ...my gf = strait ....but i'm a guy and she's a girl (really? oh shit...lol)...so I get to naturally experience duality and oneness at the same time. :)

neptune, I've definitely tried to explore homosexual relationships and I'm pretty sure that psychedelics have helped me to feel free enough to do so. There are two problems with it for me. 1, there are very few men I am attracted to and 2 when I do try with men I'm attracted to, my body doesn't cooperate, if you know what i mean.

So for me now the answer is yes and no. My explorations have allowed me to discover that I am strictly heterosexual.

8) YingYangs and binaries are so 90's. Get with the 21st century maan; it's all about mulitiplicities.

*raises hand* Male, but with no strong gender identity either way. Bisexual (sorry, should that be multisexual, -neptune-? ;)), but much more often attracted to females than to males.

I have no useful thoughts on why it might be (if it is so) that psychedelic exploration might be more common among males than females (although the idea that it might be due to gender differences in risk-aversion sounds plausible).

ETA: I'm actually quite surprised by the results of this poll (62:3 at the moment)... I had no idea there was such a huge gender imbalance here.

I am one of 4 females, and I love psychedelic exploration! I voted a couple days ago, but I had to ponder this before I replied...

I think one of the reasons that dudes might be more inclined to take psychedelics is because of them not being in touch with the deeper aspects of themselves as naturally as females. Females are brought up told that it's okay to express emotions, it's okay to cry. Whereas males are brought up distanced from their inner selves, and are told to hide their emotions...perhaps psychedelics are a catalyst for males tapping into this side of them which has been repressed due to conditioning?

This seems rather a good explanation, as it seems to fit both the propositions (1) that males more than females are inclined to take psychedelics; and (2) that the psychedelic state is reported by some males to tap into feminine aspects of the self. Certainly, males tend on average to have more symptoms on the autistic spectrum than females; suggesting we're more in need of connectedness and emotional exploration than the average female.

Would this line of argument apply even more strongly to empathogen/entactogens? Does anyone know what the typical gender profile of MDMA users is?

The most hardcore psychedelic users I know are female. Girls who pop Datura seeds like popcorn, who mix ecstasy, LSD and RC's together... The only people I know whose favorite drug is 5-MeO-DMT are female, whereas most males I know, including myself, get the heebie-jeebies just smelling it. However, none of the girls I know is active on any forum, nor are they likely to scour the backwaters of the internet looking for obscure drugs and going through the paranoia trip of ordering them.

Also, the psy-goa-trance festivals I've been to certainly weren't no sausagefests, nor were the females there particularly sober. Nor is the psychedelic community where I live particularly male-dominated.

But males constitute the majority on most forums on the internet, not just drug-related ones.

And the RC hobby is a geek hobby, and most people into it are "drug geeks" as Earth and Fire Erowid put it. Enjoying the psychedelic experience is one thing, but obsessing on various ring-substitutions and Shulgin Scale ratings is a male thing, just as obsessing on footbal games or trainspotting. Definitely going towards the autistic extreme of the male-female spectrum.

The women I've met are indeed more likely to enjoy the trip for what it's worth rather than seeking to explore new and different nuances, and also more likely to take the drugs offered to them by men than go looking for them on the internet. And when they do, they just enjoy it - they don't analyze themselves in order to gain insights on metaphysics and epistemology, nor do they post trip reports on the net in order to further the understanding of the psychedelic experience. Girls are, boys do - this seems to apply to drugs too. The flip side of this is that they go into the psychedelic experience floating, with their eyes wide open and their heart open as well, and they return unscathed from places that turn macho psychonauts into whining pussies.

Women also seem to go with the flow more, and the bad side of that is that they are influenced more by their social environment and less likely to go on a maverick trip. I do not know any females that use drugs in moderation. Those that were raised in a straight edge environment have innate prejudice against them and reject the idea before seriously considering it. Those that were raised in a social environment tolerant of drugs gobble them like there's no tomorrow.

And women are by nature a bit closer to the psychedelic mindstate than men.

P.S. Regarding psychedelics putting men in touch with their feminine side - I have a hunch that just as 5-HT2A agonists and 5-HT releasers put men in touch with their feminine side, dopamine releasers and reuptake inhibitors put women in touch with their masculine side.

Part of the reason I asked my question, on how many of these guys are str8, is because statistically, homosexuals are more likely than heteros to experiment with drugs, and not just marijuana and alcohol, but harder drugs.

I don't think males psychonauts are trying to get in touch with their Fem side. But i do think that everyone who is a psychonaut or experiments with psychedelic drugs is looking for something. Meaning, purpose, constructing an identity around being a know-it-all about rare and exotic psychedelics, or whatever

The sex demographics of a given community isn't necessarily indicative of the whole psychonaut scene, especially if we're not just talking about RCs.

The only thing I've noticed that I thought was strange, among psychonauts I've met online from the US,is that they've all been from Southern states, like Kentucky. I think there might be compounding factors that could potentially make males in general more inclined to experiment with obscure drugs you buy of t3h internet.

+++There's all those legendary female psychonauts out there, like Neurosoup and Mistress K. Although, I don't know if they frequent the bluelight forums. It seems like when girls get into psychedelics, they make guys look like amateurs...

I think that the poll is slightly misleading, I think that the percentages are more indicative of the amount of guys who will talk shit about psychedelics on the internet. Most women who eat psychedelics have lots more sense than to do that ;)

okay swilow, lets get it on!

I thought we just did...?? Hmm, musta been my pillow again. ;) :)

While I would call myself "bisexual" I don't identify as such....its not all that important to me as I'm in a heterosexual relationship currently and am happy with it; and can see it lasting. I just think sexuality is a continuum between extremes that anyone can choose to surf :) My problem with men is the hair+...I like how girlies are all smooth :D <3 *strokes Miss Swilow and is batted away*

+- I am pretty hairy :\:D
