The travel thread

it's fucking insane. i might have to travel to dubai for work in the future, and after reading up on it i wouldn't be looking forward to it.

bizarrely, libya - a dry country - didn't even look through our luggage, not once. they got a cursory x-ray scan by disinterested security guards, who only seemed to pay attention to their little stamps. i think the only thing they cared about was people bringing in alcohol.

You can smoke in Jo'burg. In fact they have a very nice smoking area with a bar! :)

How many ciggies do you smoke a day?
i know, they have a lovely smoking area! you've never seen me smoke so many fags in 2 hours, lol. i meant on the flight. gotta love africa though, you can smoke pretty much everywhere. even if there are no-smoking signs up!

i smoke about 20 a day. more when i'm at home. :o

Dubai is a cool place to visit/work, you just have to refrain from the Persians! It doesn't bother me at all, although living in Guernsey for so long means i'm pretty adjusted to it anyway.

What did you read that you didn't like?

The tobacco companies spend a lot of money on promos in Africa.

Smoking area in Jo'Burg is one of the best i've seen. In fact, i'm trying hard to think of a better one!! Miami used to be quite good, but I think it's closed now. There's a great one in the first class lounge at Dubai ;) The Irish Bar in Dubai airport is also ok.

for some reason it doesnt bother me not being able to smoke on a long haul flight, i always enjoy one straight away when i land though

thinking of headin to sao paolo next month for the carnival, the flights something like 14 hours from paris! that might be a struggle he he

See if you can get a deal with a stop off in Miami for a bit of sun and clubbing and lovely yayo! :)

i know i can refrain from drugs when i'm working, that's never a problem. but you don't need to do much wrong to get busted.

UAE's very scary drug laws
Posted by Mark Frauenfelder, February 8, 2008 2:59 PM | permalink
In January, I posted the news that a young man had been arrested in Dubai for carrying melatonin. This BBC article looks into the story, and serves up some other examples of the draconian drug laws in the United Arab Emirates.

Examples:

• A Swiss man "is serving a four-year jail term after three poppy seeds from a bread roll he ate at Heathrow airport were found on his clothes."

• A 43-year-old Englishman who had a cigarette stuck to his shoe was sentenced was sentenced to four years in prison for possession of 0.003g of cannabis, which I would imagine is a microscopic amount.

• Customs officers held a woman for eight weeks before she was able to convince authorities that her codeine pills were prescribed by her doctor for back pain.

According to BBC article:

"If they find any amount - no matter how minute - it will be enough to attract a mandatory four-year prison sentence.

"What many travellers may not realise is that they can be deemed to be in possession of such banned substances if they can be detected in their urine or bloodstream, or even in tiny, trace amounts on their person."

^ True, but i've been going several times a year for a few years and never even been stopped by customs.

I don't really believe the Swiss bloke story, either! But I always leave the codeine tablets behind.

I wouldn't travel to Dubai out of principle, fuck those cunts, they're the epitome of a hypocritical regime.... I bet all the princes are snorting coke off curvaceous arses and on the piss whenever they can! I find the drugs stuff a bit hard to accept too.... :/ Still, I did travel through Bahrain, but that was all very polite and nice, I didn't even get searched I don't think, it was quite busy? Went straight to the duty free and stocked up on $5 a carton ciggies... 8)

I personally was very careful about taking anything incriminating back with me through KMD airport and the middle east. I gave away my hash, chillum and the lovely little bag i'd been keeping stuff in, binned papers and things which had been in contact with hash, finished/chucked my baccy, washed all my clothes and checked the pockets, put my medical kit and stuff into my main luggage and kept my hand luggage simple. Maybe it was a bit OTT but I was glad I did, cos when I was checking in at gulf in Kathmandu I was literally dogged up for a bit. This army/police guy and his pooch were chilling right by me, and I was the only person there.... the boarding pass literally took like 3 minutes and they were all just looking at me in silence, I don't think time's ever gone so slowly! =D

The sleeping tablets I have were prescribed to me by my Italian NHS GP. I don't have the prescription though. The tablets are Lendormin(brotizolam), think they'd still give me problems in Abu Dhabi?

On drugs in Dubai...That is not the whole stroy though. If you even eat alot of poppyseed foods you can spond a few months in stir there. IF for example you ate a good sized breakfast and had one too many lemon/poppyseed muffins and then stepped off the plane in Dubai they can ask for your urine, refuse and you get booted and a bit of jail first, give it and score a positive you will end up in prison for at least 60 days and only then released If you can convce them of your story.

There are revised International Standards that are supposed to avoid such mistaken impressions but it is rare to see any eastern nation keeping track of revised nanogram cutoffs in urine measurements. If G-D fiorbid you actually take paracetemol and codeine OTC meds you can be sure to spend time in stir. IF you take anything like that, and have to head to Dubai, Singapore, Malaysia, and even Thailand you should always carry a note on original stationary from your medical provider specifying the med, the cause, and so on.

Sounds like BS but is ian actual fact. Then again if you are a Jew like me it is illegal (by their laws) to even be in Dubai so it is non-issue but when travelling in SE Asia, which I do all the time, I always have a note.

People tend to forget that these things happen. My country for example, if you have 10 grams of poppySEED you would get death until this past summer, now it is natural life. Better not bring a bag of bagels here!

Just for triva, my longest flight is one I take regularly, NYC (JFK) to Manila (Aquino in Makati), Direct, with refueling in Anchorage, Alaska, 25 hours on the the watch but can be 40 hours on the clock with dateline changes.
Of the 25, only 24 in the air with a break of 1 hour, no deplaning, in Anchorage which is 7 hours out of NYC.

Since they have gotten personal DVDs (Catahy and China Air as well) it is just fine. They are even getting Broadband ofr & US a trip this year so I am fine. Probaly post on BL next trip out.

I can understand the drugs laws but that is fucking shocking!

I hate what Dubai stands for, never wana go near that place.

Felix: Actually, a few are going to have it, flat fee supposedly about & US per trip which is great even for an hour flight, let alone a 2 day job across the globe like I tend to take. I am psyched .

Whoremoaning: "What law."I said it pretty explicitly. Just as it says. 7 Arab Nations prohibit Jews from even using their airlines. Now in real terms there is no way to enforce it unless someone is religiously attired, but I myself tried using the UAE flagline and they would not book me based on my name. I have a US passport as well as an Israeli and used my American passport on the booking (Manila to Dubai, to US).

Their prices are decent but fuc^ all that Big Brother invasive nonsense.

Cannot transit their airport, cannot enter their shi%hole of a country (any nation that uses Pakistanis for 2 US a day to construct a fuc^ing beach that will have artifical breezes is full of shi% in my book anyway but that is another issue altogether.

As a long term opiate/opioid addict I have several issues with the country. I am sure Michael Jackson probably has his morphine hand delivered to his penthouse but the British nurse who was jailed 2 months over having taken codeine, IN ENGLAND, and having it show in her urine is enough to make anyone think twice- Jewish or not. Even had her Embassy go to bat for her and they still kept her for more than 2 months!
