Noisy neighbours, any experiences?

Something I've been fortunate not to have experienced extensively, but something that can be a complete nightmare when finding oneself in the wrong place.

Experiences?

They say humans are resourceful and adaptive, but I could never fathom how anyone could simply become accustomed to a noisy home environment or disruptive neighbours.

Places like a college dorm or student accommodation is an exception as typically everyone is up partying together, but for regular working people, some idiot neighbour that insists on playing music too loud or bouncing a basketball in their apartment or whatever other crap noisy neighbours get up to?

I know it's not uncommon, but managing those situations, has anyone here actually done so successfully?

When I was in uni our house was pretty quiet but the house next to us was not.

We spoke to them face to face and they didn’t listen.

Their windows were all smashed mysteriously by someone and it was deep winter… they were very quiet after that happened.

Who knows who did it??🤷🏼‍♀️

It was Belfast though… it has a rep and every surname has an association. They knew ours.

apartment living just sucks, especially the low-rent types i'm used to. sooner or later i always seem to end up with a nuisance neighbour.

some people you can't negotiate with, they're just self-absorbed and think their right to enjoy their hole trumps everyone else's.

i think i have at most one more move left in me before i'm ready to get a house just to not have to share walls with anyone

our upstairs neighbors are super fucking loud. They love to stomp and we have low ceilings which is awful. Can't wait to move out from here.

Also 2 floors up still have their ac in - it's 45 degrees at night at this point - why the fuck do you have an ac running at this point.... people are strange.

Ya I agree mostly.

Personally, I haven't had to deal with the issue. Even when I lived in public housing, a group home, and a shelter. There was my roommate in a sober house who would leave the TV on pretty loudly all night - that was a tough situation because he was seemingly reasonable but ultimately just a huge liar - like complying but then reverting back.

But once he started stealing my bananas and crackers I turned up the heat on him. I let him know I knew without attacking him about it. Once he knew that I knew and was angry and wouldn't let the issue slide, he magically stopped. I had to be strategic about how I approached it but only because he was a career criminal / compulsive liar.

Anyway, my experiences may not be relatable here, so advice would be formulate a good reason to approach them. Check to see how reasonable they are first and don't attack them. If they understand, and still don't care, then maybe it's time to get someone else involved.

While taking matters in to your own hands is tempting.. I'd try to exhaust all other options first.

I lived on the top floor of an apartment block for some time and they say that's the best place, as you won't hear sound from above.

If I were to move into an apartment block, I would only ever move into a unit on the top floor.

Some blocks are built quite well with measures taken to stunt sound transmission, but of course they're going to be a lot more expensive.

However I think the majority of apartment living must absolutely suck.

I lived with this cool enough dude way back when but damn he used to be a noisy SOB late at night.

The irony was, he himself was by far the most sensitive person to noise that I've lived with, when anyone but him was making it.

So many bad neighbors in my past. People are incredibly oblivious and inconsiderate. They genuinely dont think of the fact that dribbling a basketball in the kitchen would affect a neighbor below them, or that letting their various children scream all hours of the night without stopping them would bother people across the hall.

And asking them to stop almost always makes it worse. You're left with the options of either seriously escalating and forcing them out, and just leaving yourself. That's the way of the world, sadly. A lot of people can't be reasoned with and dont have the hardware to experience empathy.

what happens if you have speakers and start playing black metal at 11 volume?

like let them know we can hear them, and we can overpower their sound?

i lived in a block of units with paper thin walls next to a family with 2 young children, and both the parents have adhd. the noise literally drove me to insanity, where i completely lost my mind and trashed my unit then got kicked out.

i would have tried the black metal idea, then if that somehow didn't get the message across i would move ASAP

if you become the louder neighbour then maybe they get the idea that it's kind of fucking annoying hearing everything going on in their flat.

where I am, it is still pretty hot during the day...
And I just haven't gotten around to taking mine out yet.
Do yous not use air conditioning year round? Like you don’t have to have it on cool, surely there’s a temp control?

If I use it in the winter in Canada, the compressor is not going to have a good time.
Oh yeah I didn’t think about that, as ye know we have no AC except in our cars and hotels shops but it’s still scarce. This summer and year has been so so hot, I sat in my car for 2 hours one day just to keep cool 😂

What does the a/c provide for you when temps are like that?
Our home is well insulated with brick siding so it gets incredibly warm over the day when the sun is up. If we don't run the a/c at night, it stays at 75F indoors which is blistering hot for sleep in my book. Can't leave the windows open because loud trucks drive by at night and there's too many bugs that get in.

When I was over there in March it was usually 40-50F or so at night. Even with the windows open I would be sweating buckets. One out of five B&Bs we stayed at had a/c, in Killarney. Those were the best two nights sleep I got in Ireland by leaps and bounds lol

I don't know how y'all make it without a/c. Anywhere really. If I can't sleep without a/c in a windy coastal town like Galway with windows open I don't know how any of y'all sleep.

This year was incredibly warm, it’s not usually like this.

Although I guess it depends on the building. Like you’d said in a previous post, most of the houses here are designed to trap the heat in from the day time but it’s usually not sunny enough for that to work.

This year was really the first year I struggled with the heat. I expect that’s going to be a regular occurrence.
