Noisy neighbours, any experiences?

Also 2 floors up still have their ac in - it's 45 degrees at night at this point - why the fuck do you have an ac running at this point.... people are strange.

Dude i thought I was the only one. I used to live in apartment building where genuinely ~15% of units would have AC running on nights that frost formed. Im not a big fan of the "NPC" meme, but seriously, it's like some people are a program gone wrong with no oversight, no self awareness or self moderation. I dont know if that many people don't know how to operate their HVAC, or what

If its 30-35F outside, opening a window would cool the place down very quickly, and running a compressor in the cold is not great for lifespan. Heck, just putting the fan to "on" with no AC would probaly cool it down just as quickly for 1/100th the energy use.

Especially these days, the energy bill in my area running AC 24/7/365 has to be catastrophic, $250-300/month.

The world is a colorful place

When i was living in Edmonton our neighbors where a fucking nightmares sometimes. Well atleast when they where off the wagon and on the crack. Other then that they where nice guys. But they would blast music at all hours and break shit when drunk. We liked to party to mind you but we kept it down

Fuck livig in a apartment im glad i live in a house

In the 26 years I've lived in this house, I've had countless sets of different neighbours on one side. Some have been very noisy fuckers, which has been annoying as hell. I have 2 upstairs bedrooms though as I live alone, and can easily switch to the least noisy room at night. Plus I run an electric fan all night, practically every night, just for the white noise it provides, and it totally blocks out 99% of noise. It's fantastic. Hah! Pun intended.

The current set on the changeable side are blissfully quiet.

And the old woman who lives on the other side is now in her mid 90s and has lived there all of her life I think. For the first 15 years or so that I lived here, her television noise was an absolute nightmare, as she was deaf as a post. I arranged for some hearing aid catalogues to be sent to her, and she got hammered with sales calls for months afterwards as a result, for which I felt only slight guilt. I mean, she needed a fucking hearing aid! The walls are so thin I can hear a lot of what's going on over there.

Anyway, she finally got a hearing aid around ten years ago, and ever since then her television noise has mostly been barely audible. I get the impression she's now in her final phase of life. Probably sleeping most of the time. This is how it was for my Grandmother and Father, both of whom died relatively recently, so the memories of what I saw and heard about their final phase of life are still very fresh. The old lady gets lots of visitors to help her, and keep her company. Mostly from the church from which she must have been a well respected and liked member.

I'm just guessing what her situation is tbh, but the above fits what I can see and hear. But there is also mostly total blissful silence from her side too currently.

I just love peace and quiet, and after experiencing long stretches of time of getting this totally disrupted and removed, I greatly appreciate currently having almost total silence from both sides.

I'm mostly a very quiet neighbour too. I use cordless headphones for all my listening to music, audio books, youtube, or TV boxsets etc.

Apart from during the legal high era, when I was a total nightmare neighbour. Sessioning through the night on GBL and stimulants, and getting very rowdy with my appreciation of music, thumping my desk, singing along, groaning in pleasure, yapping like a wolf, all through the night.

This led to the nighbours figuring out what I was doing, but everything I was taking was all legal at the time, so I never got a police visit. And when I session now, I am discrete, try to keep noise to the minimum, and always end sessions by around 1,2, or 3 am at the latest. The old woman somehow knows when I pull all nighters, and that gets all the churchy people coming round, to listen intently on what I'm doing. I know when they are there doing that, and it isnt paranoia. I now never give them enough for anything to be considered consistent with taking drugs through the night. It's not worth the hassle and trouble, although it does cramp my behaviour, it's probably for the best though.

The first apartment I lived in, many years ago, was not all soundproof. My neighbors below me would play loud thumping disco at all hours ( think Funkadelic). My furniture would bounce in rhythm. Finally, I went down to the basement and traded the fuse for the responsible outlet for one that was blown ( if I just took it out , they'd know I did it, but this way it appeared to be an overloaded circuit on its own).
Only gave me one peaceful weekend, but luckily they moved soon after

I have to say, I have never in my life owned an air conditioner, other than in my car. But hot weather is really rare where I live. However, when traveling and staying in hotels I have had a lot of noisy neighbors and the AC on fan mode has saved many a night's sleep

Before I moved here, I lived in a really nice apartment. Then three Mexican guys moved in next door...they were friendly and stuff, but over the next 6 months they moved in EIGHT more people (in a two bedroom apartment).

Shit started getting crazy...every fucking weekend they'd have a massive party, with at least 40-50 people. They had people on the patio, balconies, etc...all the while blasting ranchera music. I called the manager, but that idiot only said, "Sorry honey, there's nothing I can do...and you're the only one who's complained about it."

After dealing with this weekly bullshit, I went to Best Buy and got an AMAZING sound system...with a massive subwoofer. The following weekend, I waited for those assholes to start up again. When they did, I opened all my windows and blasted Slayer, Black Sabbath, Cannibal Corpse, Pantera, NWA, Lorna Shore, all kinds of shit at maximum volume. I was so into it, I hadn't noticed the other people had turned their shit off haha.

I guess the manager talked to them about their weekly disturbances because all of it stopped. Funny thing, the next day I was walking to the mailbox and passed by their open windows (I lived next door to them); I heard a woman shout, "Que mala!!!" Guess she didn't enjoy my music! Solved problem though!

I used to sleep in a the same room as a constantly running AC.

Never really found it to be a problem. The heat without the AC running was far worse for a good nights sleep.

A nice quiet house, completely detached, in a location which is secluded but not totally cut off from civilization is the goal.

I've always loved to cycle, I love staying green and healthy with my bike, but if I ever get the latter I'm just going to have to anti-up and get a car.
Or maybe an e-bike could work.

In another way I love apartment living cause it tends to be central and everything is super accessible, but the apartment layout is just tidy for me.
Dealing with nuisance neighbours as mentioned is the problem when it happens.

I've known folks who've lived in detached houses in housing estates though, and kids and idiots running riot outside their place was enough to make them move to the countryside.

Has anyone lived in an apartment and NOT had noisy neighbours of some kind?

If the construction is good, sufficient acoustic standards are in place and the place wasn't built by cheap developers and corner-cutting builders, there's surely apartment buildings out there without horrific noise issues?

I don't have aircon either, barely anyone has it in their homes in the UK.

I was talking about a cheap but sturdy, reliable, and effective, portable fan, that I bought for about £15, years ago.

With inflation those things probably now sell for at least twice that, these days.

I don't angle the fan towards me, when it's cold, I have the air blowing away from me, but I still get the benefit of the 'not unpleasant' white noise.

They don't use hardly any electric, maybe a few pence per hour. It's totally worth it, imo.

You can get white noise channels on youtube to play all night too, but I definitely prefer the white noise from the fan.

Conventional fans seem kind of bulky, but a tower fan or more modern design could work I guess.

Or an air purifier?

Have you tried white noise tracks through decent speakers, or just generally don't like the idea of that?

I wouldnt say that my fan is very bulky, maybe 18 inches by 18 inches, but round, and maybe 6 inches in width.

With the white noise videos on yotube, even though there was lots of choice of frequencies, I just found the noise more obtrusive and unpleasant than the fan.

Plus I was using a chromebook with just one speaker IIRC, so the coverage was not as good.

I use the fan to block out the noise from people walking past noisily in the night, and trafffic too, as although I live on a relatively quiet residential street, it's still gets traffic noise and noisy people, which often wakes me up at night, and I find it very difficult to get back to sleep again, each time, it was so annoying. I only have single glazed windows in the front facing bedroom, so there is no protection against noise from outside.

You absolutely could add acoustic board yourself if noisy neighbours are an issue, there are plenty of joiners or interior fit out specialists who’d have left overs from a big job and who I’ve seen are happy to provide it for a lot less than it sells for.

Yeah, I'd definitely use builders, or joiners, rather than soundproofing specialist companies.

I once contacted one of these, due to the old lady next door and her really loud TV noise, and the owner / salesperson of the company turned up in a brand new fucking Range Rover, clearly meaning he was making tons of money in his business.

(For any non UK readers that may not know what Range Rovers are, they are very expensive luxury vehicles, owned by the wealthy in the UK.)

And the quote I was given reflected that. I did not go ahead with it.

Of course if you're very handy and have a high level of DIY skills, you could do the job yourself, save a ton of money, and only have to pay for the materials.

I did from 2017-2020. Small old 70s unit that my wife and I shared. All our neighbors were poor or students, yet kind and obliging. Anyone who made a real racket, I'd go over and ask them politely to turn it down. And they always acquiesced. Then in 2020 we had to move because rent went up. Got a bigger unit, at a good price. Again, poor folks and students around us. But I think covid scrambled everybody's brains. From that year forward, no one would ever modulate their noise for us. They'd sometimes just tell me to fuck off, or pretend they weren't home if I knocked. Eventually I ended up brandishing a pistol at a young man who played loud rap music outside my window every morning at 6am. Called up[ my grandma the next day and asked if we could live with her to save up for a house.

That is totally me, sorry brother lol. Even through winter I leave fan in on position, I guess I like background noise & natural hot head.

One time,..well scratch that,a few times -while TRIPPING TOO HARD, my upstairs neighbor and his big ass dog and fat hoe decided to get up and dance or beat the shit out of another, lol 😆 I couldn't tell really.

But seriously nothing worse than 3 tabs deep on a new batch(or insert pe trip here too) and its hitting harder than you ever imagined, then start hearing violent stomping or ppl upstairs sound as if they "know" so they are fucking" with me, type shit - right as I am trying to lose the ego.. i turn into the ninja ready for my own door to be busted down..

Lmao seriously can throw your tripsfor a spin for the worst sometimes
