It seems that The Green's moment might have come and gone. It was mainly Starmer alienating many left leaning voters, leaving nowhere to turn but to The Greens.
Meanwhile Burnham is enjoying his honeymoon period of widespread approval. That level of approval won't last long, but hopefully he'll last longer than Starmer, and do a better job than him.
In short, all this means that The Greens have suddenly lost all those voters.
Labour are once again the only party that can stop Reform, and I believe that a second round of counting is underway, a counting of the second choice votes, because neither Labour nor Reform had a large enough share of the votes in the first round.
I partially agree…
Labour lost voters on both its Left and Right flanks to the Greens and Reform respectively.
Whilst the more borderline of both flanks may be assuaged by Burnham’s murmurings, I think the wider malaise remains lurking at the rotten heart of the current Labour Party.
I very much doubt many Reform voters will be won over by Burnham as he’s not totally obsessed with immigration and culture war bullshit. I honestly think they are mostly beyond saving.
Green swings are much more likely to be viable… but very few Green voters I’m aware of are biting all the same. Why go back to an abusive partner who promises change but displays so many ongoing red flags?
I think both Reform and the Greens are somewhat scrabbling to find a new attack vector given the massive turd in the punch bowl has now been flushed. However, both sides grievances are still very much in play.
Reform will not stop obsessing over “small boats” and immigration in general, whilst the Greens have vast spaces to the Left of Labour to focus on.
This is Burnham’s honeymoon period. As somebody who left Labour for the further Left lands of SNP and Greens, the Burnham announcements so far have been mixed at absolute best.
Frankly insulting in some cases - specifically barring a new Independence referendum, stealing more Scottish energy resources for his private partners and Westminster coffers and greenlighting US arms to Israel leaving from UK airfields. Amongst others.
My vote is never cemented until I’m in the booth with pen in hand… but so far it’s unlikely to land in the Labour box. Not saying he couldn’t win me round -
some good noises have been made… but mostly duds - or flat-out insults - if I’m honest.
