"Neural effects and phenomenology of nondual meditation and 5-MeO-DMT in an expert meditation practitioner"

abstract: https://sciety.org/articles/activity/10.31234/osf.io/whqdp_v2

edit: My synopsis: they gave 5-MeO-DMT to a single *very* experienced (this is an understatement) meditator from a Tibetan buddhist tradition, intranasally, and compared his brain activity to his own non-dual meditation. 5mg resembled it quite closely, 12mg was something else entirely. All were different from baseline.

it is somewhat interesting, but really only one participant, a 57 year old man.
initially they state that the man is an expert meditation with thousands of hours of experience.

I find it difficult to imagine that when he got the low dose 5me0dmt he would not naturally orient his mind similar to how he is during meditation.
Having additional test subjects without meditation experience would clarify that low dose 5meodmt is similar to meditation if it measures out that way.

the larger dose interrupted the meditator's normal approach completely

@pupnik yeah maybe all this shows is how much 5-MeO-DMT it takes to begin knocking someones socks off
I imagine... 12mg is a lot for anyone not familiar.. id like to see how the subject responds after beconing comfortable with the experience.

ummm im a weirdo, but i like to keep a pipe loaded w 5-meo-dmt on bedside table i enjoy the smell tbh

5-MeO-DMT is one of the only tryptamines I'm aware of that people frequently talk about which can kill with such an unpredictable nature. I've used it a lot, like way too many times, but it's a drug that I would never really return to. People have given me some wild responses too given my proclivity towards 25X-NBXX's and other things known to exhibit risk, but at least those do so with some degree of a pattern to them.

As far as I understand, this happens rarely and with overdoses or combinations with other drugs.

??? There haven't been THAT many deaths, and most have been due to asphyxiation, heart attack, or possible serotonin syndrome...
I def think N-BOxx is wayyy more unpredictable.
do we understand why the nbombs do that yet btw? they always seemed very interesting to me due to the super strong visuals reported but the deaths are sketchy

One would think it's probably a mixture of their adrenergic effects with high efficacy at 5-HT2A. Case reports of fatal or near-fatal intoxications with psychedelics all kind of read like severe cases of serotonin syndrome (agitation, confusion, overheating, ...), just that it's not serotonin binding to the receptors, but the psychedelic. 5-HT2A overstimulation seems to be the main driver of toxicity in regular serotonin syndrome.

Thanks for the explanation about the mecanism of NBOME. By any chance, did you have some references about it?
To be frank, I don't know much about neurochemistry in general but I'm curious about it and the reason why NBOME are considered so dangerous. I tried only once 25I-NBOME and it was one of the most euphoric and visual experience I had.

I had really bad hyperthermia from 25n-nbome. Never used any again after that. Had to get in and out of a cold shower until it stopped. Wasn’t very impressive as a hallucinogen either.
I think that 5meodmt is reasonably safe, though I could see someone having a heart attack during the experience.

I agree. The couple of times I've taken larger doses (15-22mg insuffl.) there was a phase during the comeup that is like a very strong thrill feeling that can be accompanied with a strong accelerated heart beat that felt like it could be sketchy for someone without good heart health. I assume it would be a bad idea for someone with a heart condition to take a high dose of 5-MeO-DMT

thank you! thats very interesting, do they just bind that strongly to it that even such small amounts cause seretonin syndrome? i mean, most psychadelics bind to it and most of them you can drive up to insane doses without much issue
