TLDR
"Meth mouth" is caused by meth users consuming on average 3.5 sugary drinks a day along with users being less hygenic, meth itself had little to no effects on oral health other than causing dry mouth.

Meth is indeed caustic but it seems wether you inhale, ingest, snort or IV meth does'nt change how much damage it does to your oral hygene.

I can definitely see how the dry mouth would cause issues and then be associated with meth use even if there's no direct causation from meth itself. Because when I smoke it.... hooooooo boy, does it dry my mouth out like crazy. And drinking water (or whatever) to moisten the mouth only seems to last a minute or so, and then it's the bloody Simpson desert in there again. Damn annoying. Stupid meth. Stupid drug. I'm not going to use any for a day or two (because I ran out and waiting to get more).

A trick to keep your mouth moist is to not swallow the water, just have it in your mouth like gurgle a bit then spit it out and repeat until it's moist. Allows you hydrate alot more since it stops you from feeling full (obviously you do still have to hydrate). Also while waiting to get more meth, just drinking a beer or two will make the comedown alot easier.

I think meth mouth is basically not taking care of your oral hygiene while doing meth. When I was doing math my teeth were really chipping out of my school

This is true---a lot of this is dehydration. That is why some experience hair loss, dry skin, brittle nails and the lot. Additionally, not eating properly - and as you said, eating sugary foods. I feel like the sugary foods cravings are caused by dopamine depletion or from malnutrition. As someone who does use amphetamines, I've tried my best to stay hydrated, eat big & nutritious meals, keep up with hygiene (which I actually hyperfixate on versus lacking) and getting exercise. Thankfully, I am down to one oral dose a day and trying to get that down to nothing. Hydration and avoiding junk food and making sure to eat real food helps a lot. Most people wouldn't even ever realize I am on meth, so I think it's helping anyways.

Thanks for taking good care of yourself (as best you can).

I've been using amphetamines off and on (more off than on) for 10 years. I know my time with the substance is reaching it's end, so at my age, I have to lol also I am OCD (literally not just in the trendy sense) and I hyperfixate about my health, cleanliness, a fear of death, etc., so I think that likely plays a role. How I ever started doing this mess is beyond me.

I can definitely see the connection between meth use and candy cravings. Like gummy bears and Skittles and little kid candy more so than chocolate. And if you're eating a ton of that and not brushing you're gonna be effed. It's interesting the various ways of ingesting it, when it comes to smoking it I can see how inhaling smoke could damage your teeth by forming a layer of residue onto your teeth similar to what you see on the inside of your pipe. What about oral dosing? I mean, do the chemicals in meth somehow gravitate to effect the teeth from the inside? This is just a subjective feeling but I've had those days where it feels like my teeth just ache from the roots. But this is from oral dosing so somehow the deleterious chemicals find their way to settle into the teeth?? So in effect they could they be rotting from the inside out then, where even intense oral hygiene isn't going to help you because your teeth are weakening from the inside out ???

Basically what the paper is saying is that inhaling meth (vaporizing it in a pipe) and taking it orally will be bad for your teeth since it's acidic but it's not enough to go full meth mouth, like on average you might lose a teeth or two but that's only if you take good care of your hygene and dont go too crazy with the sugar.

statistically, the worst meth mouth happens to IV users too, which points towards it not being the main direct cause but more indirect

Makes alot of sense, once slamming is your main course i dont imagine you take the greatest care of your teeth.
