Maybe the best we can hope for with Changey is that he had such a bad experience on Zolpidem, that he decided he wanted nothing more to do with substances, or with bluelight. And that he's now going down a substance free road instead.

Huge congrats on getting off benzos! I remember you saying not very long ago that you were on 8mg of clonazepam. So that is a very fast turn around. Yeah it definitely does take time for sleep to restore itself, but it eventually does happen.

I still havent decided whether it's helpful to use other sleep aids in the meantime or not - antihistamines, valerian, diphenhydramine etc.

I mean, they definitely help in the short-term, but they may slow down and prolong your natural recovery time. Really not sure what's best. If you can tough it out without any sleep aids, it would be a tough few weeks for sure, sleep wise, but I have a feeling the natural recovery would happen faster without any of the above type of things.

DPH makes you feel like shit when you wake up so it isn't ideal, from personal experience Valerian root has little to no effect

If you want a sleeper that isn't really abusable, 7.5mg Mirtazapine works wonders, it stops working wonders after daily use though so don't do it longer than needed

It will give you really vivid dreams, FYI, in case that's something you don't want
 
Everyone reacts differently to different substances. Personally I found that making a strong tea out of raw unprocessed valerian root to be a very effective sleep aid. Relatively short acting and mild IIRC, but still very helpful.

I've also been using Mirtazapine for some time. I have a long term prescription for depression and anxiety. I no longer have depression, and it doesnt help me with anxiety. But it continues to help me with sleep.

I recognise that of late I have been taking an accumulation of too many substances that help with sleep. Mirtazapine, benzodiazepines, kratom, and weed. The recent addition of weed has seemed to tip the balance too far, and it's now extra hard to get up and wake up in the mornings. However, I am finding the after effects that it provides very useful for helping with stress the next day, leaving me a fair bit more calm and chilled that I would otherwise be, so I'm reluctant to give up weed right now, due to the benefits it seems to be providing.

I think it will be the kratom that has to go, or at least be used more occasionally, rather than habitually, every evening. Then, at some point after that, I hope to be able to work out some way of reducing my benzo consumption.

Yeah if you're getting the actual root that could well be effective, I've just had the capsules. Maybe there was a very mild effect, but so mild that I can't really claim that it wasn't just placebo.

Mirtaz is actually better as a sleeper in small doses, I believe the histamine effects kick in hard at 7.5mg but the other effects on norepinephrine etc don't quite kick in at that dose. Mirtaz is the only drug that has actually MADE me get up and go to bed. I wasn't passed out, but I felt like I was so tired I had to get up and go to bed. Obviously, if you need Mirtaz for other reasons don't just drop your dose. The histamine effects probably aren't working anymore if you've been taking it for a while in any case.

You can always just go to bed a bit earlier, if possible, that's what I do if I want to drink 8 pints of Stella but need to be up early for work. Works a treat

Yeah the whole 'self medicating' thing is a balancing act. With one (or multiple things) balancing out others. I generally find it fun, finding out what combos, timings, doses etc work, and how to get things to work best.

Obviously things can backfire all too easily if things become too heavy or too habitual. But apart from the benzos, which I'm still using more or less within recommended guidelines, at least in terms of the daily doses, I don't think any of my other forms of dabbling should cause me too many issues in the longer term.

How mucch Zolpidem have I taken? Watching the Ascent of Man BBC series (on iPlayer) from the 1970s and everything is doubled.(at leaset BBC4 is worth the licence fee:memecat:....and then it went to Pink Floyd the The Wall :trippy:concert (greatest album ever)......seems to be a lot more hammers scary hammers...---two scary mothers!!!-YOU BETTER RUN LIKE HELL!!!! Cheers mate. He seems like a nice guy and worries about him. Zolpidem has caused a couple of disasters in my own personal like, but never anything lethal. It's got me scratching my head. And he seems like a nice bloke.
Good to see eadd is in goon hands since my resignation. Ha I don't think of myself as anything magical, but good harm reduction advice combined with your nordic joviality is spot on.
I do sometimes fear the worst for him; yet I have a feeling it was a life worth living. Who knows.
And thanks BL community for treating this matter with the seriousness it deserves.
Zolpidem fucks you up, anyone reading. It's a medication for sleep. I know of a bler who lost their arm shooting it, and potentially forever changes losing his life.
Stick to a beer, some mushrooms, a tab of acid or Es and maybe on special occasions a line or 2.
Not all drugs are born equal, and some - like crack, heroin and pharma downers, deserve their reputation.
