I'm struggling

Well @Kief' Richards, you are suffering from a lot here. Old baggage of self worth and esteem. That old pull of wanting to boost your neurotransmitters. Newer traumas like being broke and in the cold and disrespected by your employer. And no way to discount the beatdown of a romantic breakup. All on top of it being the shortest, darkest, coldest days of the year, all wrapped into the season of pseudo cheer and religious guilt ( I'm a grinch about Xmas). This society will fuck you up and grind you down with all this guilt and Horatio Alger shit.
But it's a physical and undeniable fact that we have passed the Solstice. The days are getting longer and they will get warmer. Sun will shine more, things will become green, flowers will bloom. The process is underway. That's just science
Your rebirth is underway, too. You are staying sober, your neurotransmitters are still rebuilding. You are fighting to move forward and I believe you are progressing. You are strong and determined. It will get better with time, the seeds of the sunny warmer days of spring are stirring. Really.

Ah, What about January and February. They are usually the coldest months. This ain't an island.

It is nice to see your encouragement but, I am not so sure you understand the weather, In certain parts of America.
Are you in The UK?

@Satori446 man it´s been a while. Yes, I remember you because I happen to smoke weed on occasion made by a company called Satori ;) I hope you´re doing good pal. There is nothing that warms this old junkie´s heart more than hearing I´ve genuinely helped people feel less lost. I´m kind of the lost one right now; a lost boy if you will. However, I´m not running around with sexy teenage vampires, I´m just slowly turning into a hobo on the post-apocalyptic streets of one of the ¨most caring cities¨. A lot of you guys might not know this about me, but when those Twilight movies were big, I got laid multiple times on the strength of my passing resemblance to the main Vampire in the movie. Oh, those were the fucking halcion days of my semi-youth.

I´m now much older, less-sexy and starting to sport some serious gray in my beard. My pops went completely gray by the time he was my age, 35. I´ve still got luscious, thick brown hair on top, a dirty Fraco-Canadian beard that only covers 50% of my face and hey, my nose still looks like a flaccid penis dangling freely, stuck to my face. In this way, I now take advantage of my resemblance to Owen Wilson, though that´s not as good for getting laid.

Burlington is such a shit hole man. This whole state is what happens when liberal politics, people with big ideas for how to ¨fix addiction; fix homelessness" just spin a wheel and use their massive brains and doctoral-level educations to solve a problem that they are in fact, completely clueless of. First, starting during COVID, they put EVERY MAN WOMAN AND CHILD up in a motel room, for free, for years... years. There were no incentives, no requirements. You didn´t have to work, engage in therapy or fucking do anything to better yourself. They just put active addicts up in Motel rooms for indeterminate periods of time, as ¨Housing First¨ was supposed to restore their dignity and magically reintegrate them into the human race.

Look, I´m an addict myself. When I was in active addiction, you could give me the world on a silver platter and I´d be back later that day to ask for more shit cause I had already spent the whole world on Heroin. We put these people up in these motels and all they did was languish, stagnate and be blessed with a door they can use to lock the world out. Do you think any of these people ¨got better?¨... not fucking really. Anyone with experience in addiction knows that it is a bottomless pit. There is never enough money, never enough drugs. A motel room just became another ¨given¨ for these people. Do I blame the addicts? Fuck no. Of course they´re going to take the free room. If you ask me, these retards in government sentenced them to a worsening addiction by putting them in semi-permanent housing.

Shortly after moving in, these folks began absolutely destroying these motels. I´ve been inside them. Blood on the ceiling, on the walls, refuse everywhere, I know it was not at all uncommon for blood, shit and piss to be all over these places. You might say, why? Again, if you´re familiar with active addiction, you get to a point where NOTHING matters except getting high. Flushing the toilet, picking up trash, cleaning your clothes, cleaning yourself; no need to be careful with your bloody rigs, if you squirt blood on the ceiling, it´s not your place anyway. Most homeless addicts are already very much about ¨fuck the man¨ mentalities.

So, these hotels, after they had the state fully committed to this course of action, decided to double or triple the amount they charged the state per room. After all, the rooms were basically being destroyed. There was, for instance, an upscale-ish Holiday Inn in South Burlington. They housed people for ~2 years at that particular spot. They had to tear the entire building down afterward... yes, they tore town the entire building as it was condemned due to its dilapidation. So now, every motel in Chittenden County is full of people who are staying at a rate of 300-400 dollars per night... for years.

I´m all about free housing, but man, it´s a fucking missed opportunity to give an addict free housing without forcing them to do something... anything at all. This could be: Volunteer for 4 hours a week. This could be, attend therapy once a week. Go to 3 meetings a week. Work with a case worker to find more permanent solutions to their life´s problems. The people in the motels didn´t have to do any of that. What happened, was our state spent all of this money in a totally stupid way, with clearly no input from people who actually know what addiction is.

The way Vermont has been the past few years is like a liberal, censored police state. I don´t mean the literal police. I mean, if you say one fucking thing out of line, like ¨I believe gender reassignment should not be performed on persons under 18¨ it was not only unacceptable, you would be branded a bigot just for having that belief. Yes, this is actually my belief by the way, and like any belief, we as Americans should be able to hold any opinion. If you say ¨I think housing first is ridiculous, you´re making these people worse¨ you would be branded as anti-humanitarian. How dare you imply that these people are incapable of getting better on their own?! Have you no faith in the goodness of the human heart?

Now, here we are. They don´t even open up an Ëmergency Winter Shelter. This has been an absolute given every year, for the four coldest months of the year. It would be a low-barrier, come as you are spot where you could sleep, get warm and not be judged. You know how much it costs to heat up a church basement and throw out some cots? I can tell you it costs a hell of a lot less than putting every homeless person is a triple-rate motel for years.

The funny thing about all of this? I´m about as liberal as a person can be. I fully believe in the goodness of Socialism and Marxism. The problem is, you cannot exist in this world without contributing something. There is an equation that cannot be left out of balance. Everyone should be taken care of, but everyone also has to try their hardest. I know addiction robs us of our usefulness to society in many ways. I understand this. That is why people need to actually be trying to get better. You have to produce something to be entitled to the benefits of our society.

We can take care of the sick, the mentally ill and etc, but that is only if there is literally no recourse for these people. We cannot exist with an entire underclass of addicts who are not only not contributing, but taking from the system in huge amounts. People who overdose on the regular? They require an ambulance, a stay in the emergency department and possibly critical care. This is going to be, what, 2,000 at least? Probably more? Everyone in Vermont who is indigent can easily receive state health care through Medicaid. All prescriptions are free provided they are not exotic, even those can be figured out with the right prior authorization.

All these people are receiving EBT, completely free healthcare that they sure as hell use and I know it only requires a doctor´s note to also receive ~100 cash per month for essential items not covered by EBT. You better believe a fair majority of those payments are immediately withdrawn and spent on drugs. If you think I´m getting down on the addicts, I absolutely am not. I´m an addict myself after all. If I am judging anybody, I´m judging the state and their retarded, ill-advised schemes. These people are vulnerable. They will take anything you fucking give them. If you make an offer to someone in active addiction that is A. Do you want 100 dollars or B. Do you not want 100 dollars, it´s not as if they need to ponder that,

Now the state is completely out of money. The wider population throws most of the shade at the addicts themselves. ¨Look at everything they were given and they´re still fucked up and panhandling¨. People do not care or even want to learn about the plight of these people out on the street. I talk to people from all walks of life and the majority are now firmly planted in a morality-based perspective to addiction and homelessness.

I am seeing some of the worst qualities of human existence on display every day. People who, two years ago would have told you all about how they care for the homeless and the addicts (even though they were hypocrites). Now, people are feeling the strain of finance on their lives. The worst of us choose not to accept and persist, but to blame the problem on everyone else. The homeless and addicted are easy targets for their hate. ¨Look at this guy panhandling. He doesn´t even have to work for his money while I go to work every day¨. Well, first, I would argue that panhandling is hardly ¨free¨. You stand up in the elements for hours, everyone you´ve ever known driving by and seeing you, dirty, disheveled and begging for scraps. You are dehumanized. So, when you say it´s free money, I have to disagree.

People who are one paycheck away from eviction still take the time to look down upon the person who was evicted last month. People see and feel themselves getting poorer every day as inflation increases. I believe the fear pushes them to find solace in comparison to those worse off than them. ¨They are so pathetic. I am able to manage my money and I´m not homeless because I am not stupid like those people¨. Then these people are sleeping in their cars the following month, feeling terrible that they every threw shade on any person. All of this as they wake up every hour or so to turn the car on for heat.

I know people here on the forums are here for various reasons. I know a lot of us are here because we are curious, need advice or anything in between. I know also, that many of us are here because we have goodness in our hearts. We have experienced the pain and suffering of addiction. This pain lives inside of me, as it does others. I remember withdrawing cold turkey in a county jail while a skinhead harassed me for being Jewish; he´d terrorize me and say stuff like ¨If you shit in here one more fucking time, I´ll bash your skull in¨ as I was going through terrible withdrawal. I think about those moments and the pain, and I cannot help but want to help others avoid it. I think that is why a lot of us put our hearts into our content on here.

In a word where everyone´s decency is disappearing, just remember, you are the only thing in this world that you can control. The only thing you have is your word. Love and kindness are worth more than any amount of money. My company might not ever pay me. However, the people responsible will have the knowledge that they contributed to a person´s complete economic collapse so they could make a few extra bucks. I know a lot of us here are still actively using. I know that this often requires a bit of dishonesty and graft from time to time. You can be an addict without losing your humanity. People often believe addicts are toast, no good and essentially evil/psychopathic. You do not have to lose your humanity to be an addict, so let´s all try our best to be kind, loving and supportive of those folks out on the street right now. In fact, love and kindness for everyone except Donald Trump.

If you think there is a single square foot of room for addicts without money in the world envisioned by him and his cronies, you´re just completely out of touch. Trump already has a full-fledged paramilitary wing of his political machine. He is actively trying to invade American cities by illegal means. There will be no room for any of us if this government gets its way. Roll-back of all government assistance is a given. They are instituting old-school ¨Hobo Laws¨ in different parts of the country i.e. it is illegal to loiter and you can be fined and/or jailed for the offense.

I could very easily see this underclass funneled into prisons or work-camps. Back in the day ¨workhouses¨ were places where Homeless people were sent, where they would do menial work for long hours, simply to pay for their room and board at the workhouse. I can easily see this administration incarcerating us in one way or another, using us for labor or whatever else and counting the seconds until they´re all dead. If you think this type of shit can´t happen... It has happened plenty of times before, hasn´t it? We have had a pretty cushy existence here in the West post-WW2. We have been able to extract resources from every corner of the globe. Now, we are clearly running out of resources and like every empire/ponzi scheme before us, once the new resources stop coming in, you realize the entire system was built on nothing in the first place.

American Ideology has been, stepping into 2 world wars at the 11th hour, only after all sides had practically obliterated one another,. claiming victory and then using the war gold to build an empire. The Soviets lost at least 20 million men. We lost approximately 500,000. I´m rambling, but my point is, we have never been anything other than an imperial power, doing things the same way every other empire has. We have become fat (literally) and decadent. People make themselves obese through laziness and poor diet, then pay for a doctor to shoot them up with a drug that will make them less fat.

We have been living in a golden age. The world typically consists of comparatively greater suffering than most Americans have ever had to experience. I don´t remember the last time a Cholera epidemic wiped out half of my village, or that time our country was split into Muslim and Hindu states and my entire family was murdered along with MILLIONS of others. We considered the Iraq War (part 2) as being an incredibly heavy burden on us as a country. We only lost ~3,000 or so of our men in a war that lasted years. The war in Ukraine has already claimed millions of lives. Again, my point is, we´ve had it pretty fucking good for a pretty long time. History shows us that this type of thing inevitably falls apart.

True. WWJD? Jesus that is, not Jnowhere, bless his literal- minded heart. 😘
No, the cold and freezing to death are a real concern. Nice try. You don't care about anything else when you are freezing to death.

Nice try, but using that language in The Vermont Winter. using now as only a metaphor, nice try.
-----------
The liberals in your state did this. Keif. The prog, socialists, ect. They are more responsible than Trump. You just refuse to admit they are almost all phonies and self serving hypocrites, who are worse than the wealthy right of center crowd.

You, know history, the leftists are more brutal with one exception. Except Stalin and Mao were more sadistic and enjoyed suffering. Hitler, just kill'em and be done with it. Those who didn't ended up in the Soviet Gulags, or their Nazi counterpart, the work camps, usually the death camps were used to weed out the weaker slaves.

The Soviet's like to just shoot people in the back of the head, especially their own. A good commie revolution; they always " Eat their own", lol( hey, mass murderers deserve to die).
---------
You have been on the leftist gravy train too long; and fell for their BS.

That money, made some very evil people, very happy. That's how it is done. Throw money at the problem and the consciousless lefties; take the money and run.( no.lol) JUST ANGER!!

Hey, you're bitching about about money they owe you. Welcome to capitalism, also welcome to one of the scams lefties have seemed, to have mastered.

Cheating the average person. BYE BYE THE MIDDLE CLASS. They don't care. They even less about about the worhing class, the very severely mentally ill.( talking too buildings and having no idea about SSI or other benefits. Just so gone , that they barely function, aka 20-25 years ago that seemed very evident in S.F. Cal.

Let them be, it is better, this way. Cheaper, but when asked the City refuses to answer ?'s about where are the billions, going to help the homeless.(

Bro, you gotta find a better place, to move to. The prices, cold, taxes, housing. But the rich lefties are all warm and happy.

They want their stupid superiority BS, to be believed and it is working less and less.

What about all these huge state tax dollars.( have you done a comparison)?

This President or any of his predecessors)( From Bush to him, only can control a small part of the budget).
This is The Vermont's state's problem.
(Bernie Sandersland and also the government is soft on pedos, sick bastards who run the state).

Where is all that state tax revenue going?
Only, 3 States and DC tax more. Huh, they also have the worst homeless problems in the country, also. 🤔 Higher taxes and more government

They, from both parties and the DEMS held the congress for decades, basically till Newt( that kevin Starr shit was a HUGE MISTAKE by the repubs). They have both used Social Security as a piggy bank. For what? To get money for whatever, usually pet projects for re-election purposes.

So, now tit for tat and a powerful rich group of lefties. Gates, Buffet, Soros and most of the people who are billionaires are left of center.

Bernie Sanders types are the worst hypocrites of all. Besides Benny Hinn.
( oh come on, Alistair, even you can't take his side over mine.lol)

Is Vermont still a safe haven for perverts( pedos), who should at the very least, be caged like animals till they die.

The character of a state can really shine through, when you put a light on it. Only California, New York and Hawaii, have higher overall higher state tax burden. They also lead the country in homelessness( 2024 data, it is 2025, so...) 🤔

Hey, If I am going to get stuck going to the doctor's office in the morning on Christmas Eve; I am going to bitch about the truth.

Hi, your thoughts are well put together and you are obviously a thoughtful and very intelligent person. However, the forced institutionalizations you speak of are currently already at play in some red states, and they are… actually rather humane. The Baker and Marchman Acts in FL are basically expanded pink slip laws. In most states the requisite for a 72 hour hold is that you have to be an imminent danger to self or others. That’s a pretty steep standard. So getting help via getting institutionalized doesn’t happen much in most states. However in Florida, that standard is expanded to not being able to care for self, so much wider berth to logic out a reason to section someone. And the cops are all trained to do it. And they live to do it. Because much easier than arresting, charging and booking someone. Baker Act is for people who are mentally ill and Marchman Act is for people who are acting mentally ill due to substances. Horrible, right? No, because someone say desperately shoplifting for food to eat or small items to sell say to feed an addiction are brought to county funded detoxes, which are relatively humane places. Hell, beds are always full because free food, meds and a safe, comfortable place to sleep. If their behavior prior to be.ing sectioned at a mental hospital for detox results in criminal charges, people are frequently court ordered by drug court as an alternative to lengthy incarceration to a 6 month (again county funded) rehabilitation program instead. These consist of meetings all day, assistance, and insistence on acquiring work, which they help people get. They maintain people on suboxone and methadone along the way as well, providing healthcare, counseling and psychiatric care. This is all in notoriously red states. They want clean streets. They do it because it would be embarrassing and bad for to not have somewhere to house people in active addiction. And that is better than the New England hotel situation you describe. That’s all in FL. Utah will start it soon. Texas has similar. There are still people homeless and helpless and dying of addiction. But they get sectioned all the time under state laws and many end up benefiting from these. It’s a different perspective to consider.

Why does the richest state, California, have among the highest taxes and largest gdp,( in fact the fourth largest gdp compared to the rest of the world, A.I.) So much money, such high taxes, why does Cali look worse than many 3rd world countries in so many places.

Only The United States as a whole country, China and Germany are the only countries to surpass California's GDP.
Wow, you wouldn't think such a rich leftist state would allow so much of to go to shit. How much is gas a gallon( 3.74 litres) basically 3and 3 quarters of a litre)
$2.47 a gallon but around my area just under $ 2.60, what does regular gas cost in SF, LA, California as a whole. Bye, Bye, Texaco. 107 years. Opps, what about fuel for those planes and commercial cargo. No, President Gavin Newsom, opps, he tries to so hard.lol

Could it possibly have something to do with Sacramento and the mayors of the large cities and horrible city cousels run by tone def ( Rippies)? They are the worst most out of touch, cold arrogant, self centered, worthless as a human being, worst creatures on The Earth, besides demons.

Rich hippies: They are scum. I laugh now and understand why Trump put That person RFK jr in power, lol

America is in trouble and California; all its big ridiculous socialistic ideas are failure after failure. Not to mention the corruption of the rich leftist Billionaires who just play the game.

@Keif' Richards I think this is great line of discussion to have going on and I appreciate your perspective. I was never homeless but as a kid my family could very easily have been, if hadn't been for the humble kindness of a family in my hometown that bought my parents home when it was foreclosed on and let us continue to live there free. Horrible time for me. Different times in our society.
I agree about the need to have expectations to be met for homeless addicts when you give aid. It's necessary for one's humanity to have some sense of agency, to take part in saving yourself and being a part of society ( not that people should be left to die if they don't). Ultimately I think the solution would have to be somewhere between the inefficient liberal approach you are describing as not working and the right wing approach. A common sense approach is what I would call it.

I would like to suggest that you cool your tone down Jnowhere. I just tune out rants but I'm sure you have useful things to say that I could listen to if you could say it in a respectful way.
I'm not saying this to rile you up. Please treat me with equal respect.

Hey man. Can't say I argue with anything you said. I wish things could be different in this country, and the world. Connection is so very important to the human species. I believe its the opposite of addiction not sobriety. Sobriety is a nice side effect. Its like the 60s experiment with rat park. Rats, alone in a cage, given the choice between water and cocaine water drank the coke water till they died. Then he built a giant cage called rat park and gave them same choice in water and hardly any of them drank the coke water. I think the way the world is set up now, you have to look out for yourself. Helping people shoukd not be risky. It forces us into isolation which had made us the loneliest generations ever on earth. Its sad and to be caught up in the cobwebs of the system is horrible. As an ex addict, I experienced homelessness and hospital jumping. I was always in an ER, add.itted to regular or phyc hospital, on the streets, or in a hotel getting high. Continuous cycle. It was miserable. Only when I became willing to try this recovery house I always avoided, did I get better. We have no such programs for addicts if you can call housing active addicts a program. They have programs here out the ass but none tackle the underlying problem which can differ from person to person. Homelessness here has skyrocketed. ERs are full of people in distress. And God bless the people who have to determine what's wrong and what can be done. Mostly its a discharge papers with a sheet of numbers to call, lol. Ridiculous. I think, until someone has a reason, besides copping drugs, it won't get better. People need purpose and usefulness. Thats hard putting addicts in positions where their accountable bc face it, most are not. But countries like Portugal who had the worst stats on iv drug use completely turned it around by setting people up with things to do when they got up.

I kno2 politics is just a mess. Always has been. I have no experience in politics. But I do know what it's like to have no hope. Its a terrible state of affairs. I think a lot of us out here can relate. When hope is gone, the action needed to climb out of the pit just isn't there. Motivation is fucked. It becomes a me against the world mentality and thats where the isolation I spoke about earlier comes in. No hope is bad enough but feeling alone can be downright petrifying.

I know you've seen a lot as a social worker. Now youre on the other end of it. But youre not alone. Hang on to whatever positive thats left. Don't lose 100 percent of your hope. Please. Youve bern surviving not thriving bc this is what life dictates right now. But I feel in my heart this will end for you soon. You will catch a break to squeeze out of the hole you've fallen down into. I believe in you so if I can, you surely can. Keep going and keep popping up out here. I'll be watching for you. Youve overcome much in your life. This will be another experience where you can fluo it to help people one day. Merry Christmas bud. Stay safe

Narcissistic people, always amuse me. Brief enough and accurate.

True. WWJD? Jesus that is, not Jnowhere, bless his literal- minded heart. 😘
?
I THINK OF PRACTICAL REALITIES. MY STATE HAS WINTERS, THAT ARE ABOUT AS BAD AS HIS. Bless my literal- minded heart?

No, I see potential weather issues you don't ever see in your whole life in the UK. I bet you never get below - 18⁰Celcious or even close to negative twenty or lower.

I have never been to the UK in my life and I spent much of my life in the Midwest, but it's true that I'm blessed to live in California ♥️
