When I was there, ages ago now, loads of terraces weren't just boarded up. All the doors and windows were completely bricked up!
Presumably they were all ear marked for demolition and they didnt want loads of squatters moving in, and I guess they've all gone by now. To make way for new apartments, or may have been to make way for the Etihad. Although this was well before any such ideas were even thought of, AFAIK.
It's fairly common to see 'Rusholme Curtains' nearby, which are just sheets of newspaper stuck over the inside of the windows, instead of proper curtains.. I guess some of these places could be 'smack dens', or the landlords are so stingy and disreputable they wont even install curtains for their tenants. Or the tenants are too poor to afford curtains. Could be any number of reasons, but things like that along with the all the fly tipping, make Rusholme look pretty damn rough and ready too.
