UK's new internet laws, are we going to lose our anonymity, and become as heavily censored and monitored as China, North Korea, Russia etc?

I think @Shady's Fox is missing the point, and over-complicating matters with technical talk that is beyond the grasp of many.

It's like rule no 1 of I.T. (and life in general I think) - "K.I.S.S." Also I think it's what's Occams-razor refers to, in terms of preferring the simplest explanations and solutions over the complex, in any given situation.

It's only when websites deemed to require age verification 'think' the user is in the UK, that they and the user have to go through all this b/s of uploading their face or providing DOB or ID.

If it appears to the website that you're not in the UK, then that is the problem immediately solved, just by having changed the country setting on a VPN. . As easy as that. No b/s required.

And yeah, plus you can also practice piracy if you want.

If I was very foolhardy I might change my country to North Korea or China, if that's even possible, just to see how much further restricted those guys are. But just for the sake of curiosity it's not worth it, appearing on their logs somewhere, attempting to access banned content.

The UK is already bad enough but those countries do not fuck around. Obviously.

I mean I doubt they'd try to extradite me for trying to access pornhub, or far worse, something political, from a Chinese or North Korean IP, but there would be some record somehwere.

I know there are some real legitimate concerns with the Act, but they can hardly even get a handle on Russian / Chinese social media concerns as it is. I wouldn't underestimate their powers, but I wouldn't overestimate them either.

Just a real shame for your average honest tugger.

Yeah I've heard some Chinese citizens have been getting round their social media restrictions by using the .onion version of Facebook etc on Tor. It seems insane that they have to do that, just to use Facebook.

But that might also be the case in the UK before too long, with the path we've just started heading down.

It's all blatantly so very wrong.

Crazy that we're seemingly trying to stop teenage boys from having a wank when they're probably consuming loads of antisemitic / xenophobic / homophobic / Islamophobic / et cetera / et cetera content on a daily basis.

Somehow misinformation - disinformation, even - is a lower priority.

That's a whole other argument.

With mostly those on the right arguing that current internet laws are already censoring free speech on the internet, with "hate crime" laws and such like.

The rights and wrongs of that are definitely a whole other discussion imho.

It's why Musk brought Twitter, to rid if of the overwhelming leftist bias. And now it's clearly gone way too far to the other extreme. With even criticisms of Musk himself being censored. Or millions of bots creating an apparent but false level of support for Musk and other right wingers. Notably and obviously anything Trumpian, before their falling out. Not sure how much that has changed things. Seeing as how both Musk and Trump seemingly have gigantic egos, and a paper thin ability to tolerate criticisms to go with that. A terrible combination for such powerful people.

I'm not referring to that particular (very draining) culture war.

I'm talking about content that's presented as fact but is usually total fabrication. Like what we've seen regarding Ukraine and (especially) Israel.

We're losing so many freedoms.
Like free speech.
I'm obviously against hate speech, but did you see...you know those protests outside the migrant hotel? This dude there got arrested for shouting "I love bacon!". Like, with them (the migrants) being predominately Muslim. Yes, he only yelled it to be an asshole but...ARRESTING someone for that is a fucking piss-take.
It's a bad joke.have the police nothing better to do like stopping car theft ,house theft and idiots racing around busy main roads in off road motorbikes with no helmets .it's an epidemic with motorbikes near me ,they come out of nowhere pulling wheelies on roundabouts but hey I suppose there Just doing there job making sure knowone gets offended or feels threatened by a sandwich

I never clicked on till a few days ago but there is an awful lot of my national flags being tied to lamp posts ,I simply thought there was an event ,which there is but after watching the news last night I realise why they are there

I'm in no way condoning the idiot who shouted that but if he was indeed arrested it's depressing.

Same way I feel. Not condoning what he did, but fucking hell with ARRESTING him (and they definitely did, it's on video online...YouTube Shorts was where I saw it) is so crazy.
Like, he didn't threaten anyone or use slurs or anything.

As I said - this all happened DECADES ago and I didn't hear too many people shouting about privacy issues.

I’ve been banging on about this shit for over 20 years now. Paranoid they said. Never gonna happen they said. Wouldn’t work even if they tried they said.

Who’s laughing now? Literally nobody. There is no pleasure in being “right” in these circumstances.

The internet will soon be unrecognisable as far as normies go. Yes Tor and VPNs go there’ll probably be life in the game for a while now, mainstream internet users will be confined to the acceptable face of the web. And lawdy will that be tragic 😕

Someone called me a fat bastard yesterday because I was eating chips ,cheese and curry sauce at lunch time ,I also were glasses but he never mention that and I'm relived he never noticed my receding hair line ,what do I do .shall I report him to the police as I was very intermediated for about 9milli seconds till I smiled and came up with the wittiest responce I could manage while stuffing my face with chips .

Last I heard fat, speccy, baldy cunts are not a protected class. Like it or not that makes a big difference. Personally I think rightly so but each to their own 🙂
No but it could be a form of bullying in the work place which is covered by the scottish hate crime bill .

^ Dunno but talking to yourself would imply schizophrenia which would place you in a protected category ;)

Then you’ve answered your own question: you could call HR if so inclined.
Sorry for my remarks last night I had to much to drink .if its any consolation my heads pounding this morning lol.
Apologies
