Pope Francis dies at age 88

Whoa, a monk predicted all the names of Popes and ended with Francis? I am intrigued. Either good guesses or ... or something more concrete. I will keep watch from here on out. I almost hope he is correct. But we will see.

Half my family is RC, the other half Eastern Orthodox. I am neither. Still trying to piece together answers for myself. I take the wisdom, leave the rest. I have a family member that is a real moron but a bible thumper. But he is EO not RC. He can turn people off.

Hey was just thinking of you. My wife JUST sent me the Liberal Redneck video on the Pope in a text. Honestly this pope, because he had a little decency beyond the RC, is being recognized. I have not heard any venom from anyone. So he did a few things right in this wrong world. Is there another pope we can say that about? Hey, you work within the framework that you have.

I left the catholic church after confirmation (16/17 years old) and other than attending the occasional mass for family events, I had almost no connection with it.

I started paying attention to Francis when I first learned of him becoming the pope - the fact that he was a Franciscan committed to aiding the impoverished was something I respected as St Francis is one of the saints that I've always held a lot of respect for, even outside of religion. As I've mentioned on here before, I've been homeless and I've worked with people who are struggling with housing, poverty, addiction, etc., and Pope Francis's commitment to these causes, and to his vow of poverty was something I found very moving.

I cried a bit yesterday when I listened to a news report discussing his services - the reverence and respect that so many people had for him, and how much respect he earned through his actions and teachings, demonstrates just how much of a force of goodness he was during a time of tremendous suffering throughout the world. I hope that his legacy can continue to inspire the church to focus less on opulence and more on service. I hope that his choices to promote women (nuns) into leadership roles within the vatican contributes to continued evolution of the role of women in the church.

There was a story recently about Francis calling the priests and parishioners, offering compassion, support, and aid if possible, of a church in Gaza every night during the war:


I also heard about how he would often sneak out of the Vatican and disappear to go hang out at a local homeless shelter for hours.

That kind of stuff speaks of his depth of character. He was a good human.

Is it just me, or has our generation seen the most Vatican/pope replacement action in the last 20 years? I'm not hallucinating, right? 🙄

This is the thing in a nutshell. Christianity and Jesus are mutually exclusive, you can't be/follow both and be congruent. One is a political system, the other is a spiritual unfoldment. One is retarding and rooted in fear, the other is transcendent and rooted in love.

It's the oldest most powerful institution on the planet. If it were just a relic the Vatican would have been turned into an amusement park by now, in this day and age of commodification. You only need open a book on European history (or South American) to see just how malevolent the RC Church is. An entire millennium of blood shed, supposedly in the name of Jesus? Get the fuck out of here with that shit.

And that is just the history we know.. imagine what we don't. Gods favourite hypocrites, is all they are.

Bollocks to that. The amount of fear the RC Church is responsible for regarding death, in the minds of children around the world going back centuries, the institution he presided over.. yeah, no.

If you put on that ostentatious triple crown hat then you deserve all the contempt and ridicule available quite frankly, and it's completely justifiable. Everyone does not deserve the dignity of death. How can you possibly even present that as an argument when we're talking about the head of the most powerful institution on the planet that is steeped in blood, fear, and riches. You have no idea what skeletons that man has in his closet, and going on the track record of Popes, Jesuit's, and the institution as a whole.. I'll bet you anything that a Jesuit Pope has got more than one in his closet.
