💥 Contest 💥 Bluelights Favorite: Classic Rock Artist

This dudes first and far superior band.

They played outside the Isle of Wight’s festival gates. Drummer fell off his seat b/c of Quaaludes and Valium. Saxophonist was wearing a full Samurai costume, and on acid, thought he'd been electrocuted from a lightning strike.

Still going strong, touring albeit at a relaxed pace and released Stories from Time & Space about 6 weeks ago.

The dude got kicked out of this band, when, upon entering Canada he was thought to be carrying a pound of Cocaine (it was Methamphetamine).

Mad but true, today is solstice eve, and exactly 40 years ago tonight I saw Hawkwind live for the first time, at my first ever festival (the last-ever people's free festival at stonehenge in fact). Went on to party occasionally with a couple of them for many years

@ageingpartyfiend Thanks for posting that Hawkwind video. Much appreciated!Don’t suppose they performed ‘You shouldn’t do that’?

Man, that would have been one hell of a show. I’ve been listening to Hawkwind since 1987. I had gone into an old record store and was looking through the used bins and saw a record by a group called Van Der Graaf Generator. album was ‘Still Life’ with the cover being a giant flower of sparks. took ot home, gave a listen and then headed back to the store and said ‘Do you have more stuff like this please’?.

Some Hawkwind compilation, and the first song I heard was Master of the Universe. So. i started buying everything Hawkwind/Hawklords.
Hawkwind then shoved me into a genre called Krautrock (Eloy, Can, Amon Duul, Ashra Tempel, Triumvirat, Wallenstein, Jane.

Here’s my bonus classic rock video from Youtube. Can - Mushroom

I guess at some point, Hawkwind switched me off of mainstream radio.

Managed to actually get my friend, a DJ at a community college fired b/c he played one Hawkwind song ‘Brainstorm’. well, I liked it.

Not a big fan of Pink Floyd (except for The Wall which I had memorized when I was like 12) but can listen to their music without getting nervous.
Hendrix is too "jazzy"? for my taste.

So my vote goes to Pink Floyd.

i actually wouldn't pick either one of them....

The Who shits on them both
The who song catalog that pete takes lead vocals on is some of the best classic rock of all time
Like the handful of songs kieth richards sang on rolling stones lp's

there is no greatest
most of these bands were better than 90% thereafter

I’m using a program called myTuner Pro. It was a $9.99 Cdn IOS purchase, letting me search by genre, country, call sign, etc. I searched for Iron Maiden and foumd a ‘network’ of rock music radio stations in either Dubai or UAE that stream a particular artist (say Tom Petty) 24/7/365.

But then if I was in a Brit-Pop kinda mood, I’d search for Kasabian and start listening to similiar types of music - or I’d search by Manchester, UK and listen to all those stations. Allows favorites, alarm, sleep timer, podcasts, search by country, city, near me, best of, etc. Currently listening to ‘I Got Wasted Radio’. No idea where the heck it’s from; but ’light electro dance’ is how I’d label it.

One band I’ve really come to like is Infected Mushroom (Psy-Trance/Goa-Trance) with savage, headache inducing, pounding bass and synths.

A shameless plug for an app that costs less than a Big Mac meal in Canada

As I’ve grown older, I’ve finally learnt that not liking certain types of music is okay; calling them or thinking of them as crap has just….faded from my thoughts. I just don’t listen to stuff that that I don’t like as frequently. I still check in on disliked genres every now and then.

And what the hell, I’m done with my morning napping, so y’all get my top 10 (in no particular order since I don’t have this thinkified in advance)

1) Hawkwind - UK
2) Van Der Graaf Generator - UK
3) Eloy - Germany (Meddle era Pink Floyd)
4) PFM (Premiata Forneria Marconi) - Italy (ELP)
5) Le Orme - Italy (ELP)
6) Banco Del Mutuo Sorcosso - Italy (ELP)
7) Opeth - Sweden (symphonic death metal)
8) Brian Jonestown Massacre - UK? (dunno how to label them)
9) The Flower Kings - Sweden (Roundabout era Yes)
10) Iron Maiden (New Wave of British Heavy Metal was their original label)

And for every band I’ve mentioned, there’s hundreds not. I never thought I’d subscribe to music; but $10 a month Cdn for no ads and unlimited consumption is better than listening to free terrestrial radio - even though I still do on the app I’ve mentioned.

I use to like Dixie Dreg. But their style had nothing in common with Deep Purple, so I'm surprised to hear he plays with them

I think I'm gonna vote Pink Floyd. Although I think Hendrix is more singularly talented than anyone in Pink Floyd, Floyd has multiple very talented members, they also have arguably more big hits on classic rock radio.

So yeah, Pink Floyd.

We need more votes though, only have a couple so far for the final round.
